My cumualtive GPA is a 3.0 and my science GPA is about a 2.4. The reason why my GPA is so low is because of my grades from freshman and sophomore year. During my junior year I maintained a GPA higher than a 3.5. Will they notice this? I'm currently studying for the OAT and I plan on aceing the test, but is my GPA going to outweigh everything when they look at my application? Is it going to be hard for me to get in?

Holy crap, how low was your GPA your first two years if a 3.5 only brought it up to a 3.0 and 2.4? Its good your doing better now, but a 2.4 science GPA won't get you in anywhere. Retake some, or a bunch, or those science classes and get your grades up.

im in the same situation as you.. my cumulative gpa is only a 3.05 because my freshman and sophomore year i was too busy having fun and not focusing but the last two years my gpa was about 3.5 or above. Im not planning on retaking my courses because it would take up another year just to retake a bunch of general bio and chem classes, which i feel would be a waste of money. I also just took the OAT. I scored average, considering I only had 2 weeks to study for the test. My scores were 320 TS and 330 AA (350 QR, 340 Bio, 330 Ochem, 340 RC, 300 Gchem, 310 Physics). i hope seeing my grade trend go up over the years and my scores are decent enough to land me an interview.. im applying to SCCO, NECO, ICO, SUNY, and PCO. good luck!

yeah the whole GPA thing is stressing me out. I haven't even taken the OAT yet but I plan on taking it in October. I'm really hoping my test scores can outweigh it. What is your plan B if you don't get in? I don't know if I should get a master's or spend another semster in college retaking courses.

I'm thinking a 2.4 GPA isn't going to be good enough. That is quite low to be trying to get into optometry school, to be honest. You need to retake some courses to bring that up!

i would recommend grad school, like a masters prog, over retaking courses. if you have to pay, might as well get a degree for it. i too had a low gpa. 2.8 out of undergrad so instead of even trying to apply, i did a masters in biochem. i maintained a 3.4 throughout and continued working at an office and even added optometric research to my experience. the schools will be a lot more impressed that you can handle graduate courses in a science major because the basics are necessary to succeed in those courses. plus it brings up their stats as well. i got 4 interviews, including berkeley, and currently at pco. it can be done so keep your chin up and keep striving. good luck.
