How Happy are You at Your School?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The schools that have the least amount of complaints are probably doing a better job. I hardly ever here a bad word about some schools while others have a rather poor reputation according to posters here.

The most disappointing aspect of dental schools are all the pompous a*** that are in charge, many of whom are completely void of people skills. It is amazing the amount of arrogance , favoritism, and shady business deals that goes on, much of which has nothing to do with excellence in dentistry.

There are many people working at dental schools who should be fired immediately, but the shortage of instructors has allowed many dental schools to become the civil service, providing jobs for life. Supply and demand has watered down quality assurance in many cases leaving a blurry line between a challenging curriculum and faculty ineptitude.

To anyone who would listen: Be very careful of where you attend dental school, be advised about all that is being said here. Just b/c things are hard to believe does not make them inaccurate.
Very good post. 👍

BUMP
Anyone care to share a bit more about UCSF??

I went to pittsburgh, i hated it , i hated the dean, dean braun who didnt give a damn about his students, and i hated most of the faculty b/c they were more concerned about laughin and making fun of students when they should be helping them or teaching them. what me and my friends were so curious about is where all the tuition money was going b/c i know it was not going to helping the students, its highway robbery, what a joke!!! Not to be rude but why do foreign students stink so much, we would have patients and other students complaining of how bad some of these students smelt, I am so glad to be away from those smelly bastards!!u know its the truth guys lol

In some countries, deorderant is not mandatory. Maybe that is what you smelled? But then again, during exam time, there are some Americans who don't bother showering. Just another amazing story of someone's experience in dental school. I often wonder why there isn't a reality t.v. show about dental school. I wonder if any eyes might be opened to some of the shenanigans. There are some great folks, but there are some jokers who shouldn't be allowed through the front door.

but u know what i am talking BOUT it wasnt a smell of using a deodrant it was a putrid smell of poo poo, 😉 i mean i had instructors making fun of the smell, and it was unbelievable how the people working at the school were trying to tell some of the students to tell these smelly folks to take a shower

Dude..it's called curry.

Dental school sucks. It's supposed to suck. It's a big ritual hazing that gets handed down year to year. The only saving grace is the fact that once you survive the hell, life gets pretty nice.

ur right it is curry, its such a vicious circle, instructors got treated like crap when they were students and instead of changing the system they do the same thing treat their students like garbage, what a joke:meanie:

This is an interesting thread. It helps me to be a little more nervous about what to expect in D-school. Please, carry on.....

its a thing that they use in curries and it stinks like hell, i politely told couple of students to do something about it, but u know what can u say? when they use the whole house stinks, also the clothes in the house every thing,

!!!!

Meanwhile, getting this thread back on track...

😉

haha.. this is quite amusing! I like my dental school, and it's really not bad. As long as you are able to manage time and stress well then there's lots of time to study as well as party!
And as for the smelling thing, not all foreign students smell. Not even most of them. Maybe that guy up there bumped into the few of those who do. By the way, curry does taste good! haha!

SUNY @ Buffalo.
Where else does a Vet with a Bsc borrow 150+G to be treated like Shi+?
I was treated better by the Marines! The Freaking MARINES!!!

Do you realize how bad dental school is when you'd rather go back to Boot Camp most times?

I keep hearing its worth it, but I'm still waiting.

Better watch out... Dr. J monitors SDN 😉

I'm not happy with my school these days. Too much negativity from everyone, and that is rubbing off on me. I need to get out of this mud,

Same here. Mud up to the eyeballs. I think it's called senioritis

My dental school experience is very military-like and my 8-4 M-F is basically doing errands assigned to give professors self esteem.

Wish this wasn't the case, but just do as one is told, and hopefully we'll slide through 🙂

Life is too short to get all bent out of shape by some wanker profs or backstabber classmates.

MWU is the ish. Everybody is happy here and our profs and faculty are awesome. Campus is nice, everything is shiney and new. Our quality of life is as good as it gets!

Why isn't there any review about Texas Schools? I am very curious.

ok so let me tell you guys that in san antonio, everyone is stressed about everything, everyone wants you to be stressed at all times, i don't want to tell you my own opinion but i have heard from many people that they would wake up in the morning in complete stress and they really don't like it.

I'm at Houston and I really like it. I don't know exactly how to describe why I like it though. All of the professors really seem to care, and I don't feel that stressed out. Our class is very talented, as well as competitive, but it's always in good spirit. Everyone shares all kinds of notes and helps each other. The second year class is quite a bit more "relaxed", but they are cool and help us out as well. I haven't found anything in any classes unfair.

Labs and waxing seemed very fair with every professor that graded my work and gave me positive feedback. I don't think there is a single professor that gives negative feedback; everyone really focuses on providing positive feedback instead of just negative criticism.

My experiences with students in the 3rd and 4th years has been great as well; they say they have less stress than us, lol. All of the clinic leaders are pretty cool, and in my shadowing experiences, also seemed to provide the positive feedback for students.

In addition, everyone knows that Texas has the cheapest dental schools in the nation, and I can tell why. I went to a budget meeting for the school (one of a few students there) and they earnestly try not to charge too much and make frugal decisions for us. In other words, they are working for us to keep costs down (State subsidization sure does help too) Of course costs are still going to rise some, but what else is new, because their projected fee increases are still much less than other schools.

So this thread has really made me cautious about attending UCONN. I'm interviewing there this year so I'd like to hear some good things about the school. I'm obviously taking everything that has been said with a grain of salt but c'mon, one needs to hear some positive things from students there. Anyone from UCONN enjoy their time at all?

yeah pretty much. and because they dont really care. Anyways in short: NOT Happy. UCLA is all hype but when you come here you will realize its nothing special. They like to accept immature, young, over achieving, "gunners" and having to spend so much time with these people you will probably start hating your classmates towards the end of the first year. the new curriculum is extremely not running smoothly and there are classes that are such massive wastes of time
