How to answer "How have you helped the underserved? and how did you interact with them?" when my volunteer service was in San Francisco, a city is not underserved? 😕😕 Thank you so much for any advice. 🙂

So what exactly are you asking? Advice on how we would answer the question 'How have you helped the underserved?' because you don't think you have helped the underserved? And this is for an application of some kind or just a potential interview question?

While some cities certainly have more underserved areas, they exist everywhere--especially in urban populations where people are from low-income or even rural areas. You could probably even extend the term "underserved" broadly to the geriatric population. There are many opportunities to volunteer in dental clinics and other community based programs. For example, visiting schools with children from low-income families and educating them on basic oral health prevention and care.

This is false.

If you haven't done anything to help the underserved, then you say that you haven't helped the underserved. Lacking this experience isn't a deal-breaker for most schools but what you stated above is not a valid excuse. Are there no clinics that treat homeless, HIV positive, or low-income patients in San Francisco?

Sorry about the confusion. That is a potential interview question.

So, the underserved is a term refers to people? I though it refers to the area that doesn't have enough dentists or physicians. And I believe San Francisco has too many dentists...

I understand what you are asking now, sorry I didn't get it right away. The term underserved can be used in different ways. An area can be underserved by dentists but individuals of certain demographics in a given area can be underserved. The previous examples of HIV patients and homeless are excellent examples, both of which San Fran has plenty of. You can certainly serve these populations while being in an area with 'too many' dentists.
