Ok there is a moral lesson to this story:

I am a late applicant. And by now, all of you know the disadvantages of applying late. All of you know that a good applicant can lose their chance in getting into any school if he/she is late. All of you know how angry, frustrated, scared, and paranoid late applicants like me are at this time of the year. I took my DAT on the 18th of December and the official score report was sent on the 27th of December (electronically and hard copy). Other than that, the schools have all my supplemental stuff. Here is the trick! I had absolutely no idea that the ADA is extremely slow at sending official score reports. It is January 17th and yet the only school that has received my official report is UCONN. Yes believe it or not, only one school has my official report. All the rest are reviewing my application with unofficial copies of the report.

Anyways, so I called penn at 4 pm (today) and spoke with Ms Loyola. She said “we still don’t have your official score report and the deadline has passed….you need to call ADA and ask them when they had sent us the report”…and so I called ADA :scared: :scared: :scared: 🙁

Hearing the word “deadline” and knowing that I am late and already 28 (don’t wanna wait another year), I went crazy and totally freaked out. So the DAT lady says “sir, we sent out everything on the 27th of December and even if there were holidays they should have still received them….sir, penn is notorious for telling applicants that they don’t have their reports when they actually do…sir, they can also access your scores electronically”

So I went crazy even more and called Penn at 4:30 pm. A person other than Loyola picked up the phone. So I said “hello, I am an applicant to the 2006 entering class. My file is missing the official DAT report despite the fact that ADA insists that you guys have the report and an electronic report as well”…I said that in a loud and paranoid tone…then I said “I do not want my application to be denied a comprehensive review because of the missing report” and that’s when the lady got a bit loud herself and said “your application has been reviewed twice and it is still considered for an interview and that’s why it’s not even in the office because it is in the admissions committee room”

Me: I am being paranoid because the deadline has passed
Penn admissions Lady: we have sent out 100s of rejections and your file is still considered
Me: thank you ….i thought that when Loyola said that my application has been looked at twice, she meant that the file was picked up, examined for completeness and then denied a review due to the missing report.
Penn admissions lady: no…..when she told you “looked at twice” she meant reviewed comprehensively by the committee twice.
Me: oh I see,
Penn lady: could you spell your first and last name for me?
Me: my name is……..
Me: well thank you…now I feel much better
Penn admissions lady: hung up!!!!! Yes…she hung up on me 😡 😱 😱

What’s gonna happen next is obvious: the lady took my first and last name so that she could tell the adcom that I am a paranoid weirdo who is not worthy of an interview.

So here is my advice to pre-dents: never ever call a d-school when you are angry and freaked out because even if you think that you’re civilized and you can cool down once someone picks up the receiver, that usually won’t happen: Your anger will show and you will look like a classless person. What I should have done was to calm down and take a few deep breaths before calling penn. And if you are a late applicant, the last thing you need is to lose an interview opportunity because you came across as a rude obnoxious person. And keep in mind that if you call the admissions office at about 4:30 or before 5 pm and a person other than the usual admissions officer picks up the phone, it is most likely going to be a person of a higher rank in the admissions office—so be careful what you say.

I am a rather calm and courteous guy. But many thanks to my accidental poor judgment and hastiness, I am now even more paranoid and frustrated.

In fact, I was deeply hurt when I learned that after 2 reviews, the adcom still did not consider me good enough for an interview. For those who are wondering about my stats, here’s my profile:

Sc GPA: 3.5 Cum GPA: 3.7
Grad (MPH: Epidemiology) GPA: 3.6
DAT (one attempt): 21/23/20 (AA/TS/PAT)
Extra c: some volunteer work
Research: 2 publications and an upcoming one
Work: research tech, lab tech, adjunct lecturer (A&P)

Penn is absolutely not my top choice but as a late applicant, I am like a drowning person who needs anything to hold on to …….. 🙁

Yeah I just received a rejection from them today 👎

I'm not going to beat a dead horse but you're right. You acted very poorly. I must say you do have some balls on you, yelling at an admissions officer. BUT things may not be as bad as you think. Did you get the name of the person you spoke with? You may want to send a letter of apology. You have proven to them that you can't handle stress reasonably, You may want to show them now that you know how to apologize when you totally screw up. If you dont have the name, maybe you can call the office anonymously (*64 mean anything 😀 ) and find out who was in the office when you called.

1. He didn't mention anywhere that he yelled at anybody.

2. Somebody who answers the phone isn't exactly an admissions officer in my book. That's a receptionist. They often have no clue as to what is going on, as is demonstrated by Ms. Loyola telling him that they hadn't received his score report, when in fact they had.

3. I wouldn't even begin to say that he has demonstrated that he can't handle stress reasonably. One could argue that he has demonstrated that he's on top of his game and does a great job following-up with situations.

4. DO NOT call the office to apologize. That's absurd. Everybody has a bad day. You're human, not God. Dentists are gods, they're human. Don't stress it.

LOL. You could even throw in a "and by the way, where do you live?" to freak them out.

I dont see the problem in all this...seemed like a somewhat normal conversation.

thank you Gavin.....

you are right...i did not yell at all. it's just that i sounded like someone who's about to explode due to extreme paranoia. the cell phone was literally touching my mouth so i was louuuud. like you said, it was a bad bad day and bad bad time to call the office....i am still debating what course of action to pursue at this time with Penn. perhaps other SDNers can weigh in the debate...

thanks

lol...polarnut...

oh rezdawg...it was not a normal conversation because she hung up on me...and she too raised her tone....

I hear "thank you" cakes are really the way to go if you want to impress the people in the admissions office...in your case i guess you could make it an "im sorry i kinda yelled at you but really didnt i was just a little stressed out" cake.

It really is tough to say what you should do, but for future advice you are better off contacting a person who can actually help you, like an admissions director rather than just calling and speaking to a secretary. Also rather than calling it is better to email, that way you can remain proper, well mannered, polite even though you really are ripping your hair out. I recommend you try to contact someone from the ADCOM via email. Or else just sit and wait. There's no need to apologize but you can request for a clarification of this situation.

i totally understand your panic; we've all been there. however, dont ever ever ever never ever frustrate the admission reps on the phone. even if they act like idiots dont ever give them the excuse to be angry at you. in fact, you are not to even look at them straight in the eye. you walk out of their office with your face towards them, slowly, with your back bent 45 degrees. they are the gatekeepers of the universe :scared:

of course, this all changes once you get into the school. you can like throw pebbles at em during lunch for kicks.

The admissions secretary would have every right to be mad at you. But to tell you the truth, she probably spoke to 8 other students that day that sounded crazy, rude, and paranoid like you. I once chatted with an admissions secretary and she told me that the phones in the admissions office are non-stop around this time of year. And most of the callers are applicants such as yourself. So I really wouldn't be worried about your little episode. I'm sure that they deal with this on a daily basis and your freak-out is a common thing. I honestly wouldnt try to reach the person you spoke with to apologize because that would prbably remind him/her about what happened ...when what you really want them to do is forget it ever happened. And let's be realistic, he or she probably knows that the only reason you're calling is because you're afraid that your convo might hurt your chances of getting an interview.

😉
Good luck!

I disagree with #2 the head of admissions for the following schools answered the phone when I called over the summer.

1. Harvard
2. Penn--that was probaly Corky who answered
3.Pitt
4. MCG
5. Kentucky
6. UAB

It seems to be the trend that if the head of admissions is not a DEAN ( i.e UNC) then they are VERY hands on in the admission process. If i was in your situation I would try to smooth it out some kind of way espically at a school like Penn they have many people clamoring to get in.

Call and apologize right away or I'm putting you to bed without dessert.

1. In his original post (section 4, line 3) he said "...in a LOUD and paranoid tone." Forgive my interpretation but when a person talks in a "LOUD TONE" especially on the phone, he or she is yelling.
2. Corky Cacas has a nice habit of picking up the phone every now and then. If Director of Admissions isn't = Admissions officer, then again forgive my interpretation. When I interviewed at Penn, Loyola, Cacas and Another lady were the ones I saw working in that office. Besides, if an office worker is not directly involved with your application, does that give you the license to be rude to the person?
3. I wouldn't bother with that. You're entitled to your opinions. If we all went about doing such a great "job following up with situations" we sure would be in a lovely, lovely world.
4. I never said call the office to apologize. I said LETTER of apology. And I only suggested that IF he did not get the name of the person to address the letter to, he should call ANONYMOUSLY to get it. He does NOT have to agree with me. That's why it's a suggestion.

Post #8 and #9 confirm the impression I got from the original post. LOUD. Rasied tone = loud. 😀

The best course of action is one of inaction. Do nothing. What is done, is done. Calling to apologize makes you look desperate and even more paranoid.

If she asked for your last and first name spelling before she hung up on you, how the heck did she check your file?

She'll just ask Ms. Loyola what your name was....but the previous poster brings up a good point.

Easy for a 3rd year dental student to say. Are we forgetting that this guy doesn't have an acceptance yet?

Don't call and apologize, they probably didn't write anything in your chart and have forgotten about it by now among the 100 other applicants that called the same day. bringing it up again, like someone else said, just 1) reminds them about it, 2) takes time out of their busy day thus annoying them and 3) might make you look even more wierd. One time I called a school 2-3 times because i thought they lost my application, and i know for sure that one of those times I sounded desperate/pushy/annoyed and they sure sounded annoyed back, but guess what i did end up getting accepted there. so - i know you can't help worrying but don't lose hope yet, try to just let it go for now and see what happens (i know its hard).

When I called one school this morning, I swear I must have woken her up from her lunchtime nap because she sounded REALLY GROGY and tired when she answered the phone. Poor her

All I can say is that you are in the same boat as the rest of us, however, some of us researched this whole process a year ago to see what we needed to do and when to do it.

We wanted to be dentists and when you were taking it easy we were planning out our lives.

So, I don't feel sorry for you. Just take a year off and apply early next year, at that point you MAY want to be a dentist as much as I do right now. If not, you will probably apply late AGAIN and not get in AGAIN.

truth hurts my friend.

Looks like our serial troll has reared his/her ugly, 14 year old head again. Please go away and definitely don't try to discourage people who come to these boards because they geniunely need some help.

hey zach, what you said hurts but not because it is the truth. you're judgemental and presumptious.....i was not taking it "easy" and you dont even know me so you dont know my circumstances. all in all, we're not in the same boat.....you 're in the boat of judgemental jadded and bitter people. i am just in the boat of those who, for some reason or another, applied late. if you have nothing usefull to contribute, please dont post for the sake of posting, cus it's silly.

and my reply to your lack of kindness is this: congrats on your acceptance, as i have posted on your thread

Hermytheyelf: your avatar is one of the cutest i have ever seen. where did you get it? lol

Pay no attention to the troll...he hangs around and tries to make other people feel bad about themselves to compensate for his own inadequacies. As for my avatar, I just cropped a picture that I stole off CBS's official Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer website. My advice to you is don't worry about dental school...yes you applied late which decreased your chances, but you have stats that most applicants would kill for and if you don't get in this year, you can apply early next year, get loads of acceptances and maybe even some scholarship money somewhere. Either way, don't stress because you'll be just fine.

hermey, thank you...bless your heart for the kind words. i have read your other posts under various threads....and i must say that you have the type of personality that is very diplomatic and you're one of those who 'd never cultivate enemies. oh by the way, was the cake thing a joke, or some people really did send a cake?

fightingspirit seems knowing a lot about some schools such as Columbia. Is that your top choice or something like that?

greenday, i know what is going on in your mind but it's not like what you think! am i applying to columbia? the answer is yes i am. is it my top choice? absolutely not! columbia's program would not be a good match for me. i am not too fond of SDOS. in fact, early in the application process, i was totally into columbia because i was hell-bent on staying in the city. my interest in it was entirely based on my desire to stay in NYC. but after some meditation and research, i realized that i should not consider staying in the city as a top priority if i wanted to be a successful dentist.

i assure you that it's not what you are thinking!

yes...some people can be that bitter

i know that a lot of you are familiar with MD2B20004 and his provocative questions and the whole psychotherapy business....well, perhaps banning MD2B20004 would not be such a bad idea.

No point in making your disagreement public. You'll get a better result by just reporting the PM to a mod.

Don't be an a$$ man. Kicking someone when they're down is in poor taste.

Fightingspirit, don't call them again. Don't send a letter. I don't think you did any damage with your phone call but if you habitually contact them, they are going to get sick of you. It's like sinking in quicksand. If you struggle then you'll just sink faster. I'm on a waitlist at Harvard and I have to fight the urge to call them everyday.

Don't be an a$$ man. Kicking someone when they're down is in poor taste.

second that

its probably not as bad as you think, just maintain a cool head and wait. Once the application is submitted all the hard work is pretty much over, then the interview is an opportunity to show them the real you. If you unfortunately get bumped from this cycle, get back on the horse next year. I applied in Early Oct, got into my number choice. Your stats are solid, so relax. If your getting paranoid now, whats going to happen if you get waitlisted?

ok......guys

thank you for the moral support. after reading your replies and the PMs of some sdners, i decided that the proper course of action would be not to call again and not to send a letter. after all, two outcomes of yesterday's phone call are possible:

1-no significant damage and they will forget....so no problem
2-significant damage that an apology letter won't be enough to fix

in both cases, a letter won't do.

in fact, regardless of the phone call, the fact that my application has been reviewed twice and yet still not considered worthy of an interview is not a good sign. i wish she had told me that it was not reviewed at all.

ok guys, you're not gonna beleive this:

so columbia called me this morning and told me that my official score report was in their files since january 4th, and that they could not locate it because my first name was switched with my last name on the official report.....so i e-mailed schools i applied to to let them know that they have all had the report since the first week of this month....all the schools had my complete application since the first week of january!...go figure.... 😱

my application process has been so rocky.... :scared:

the secratary in noway will have any bearing on the desision a qualified ADCOM will make. No matter what - focus on your scores and be confident. May be use more discretion and diplomacy next time - but i wouldn't take is as far as "How I just ruined my chances!!!! "

You are not the first and will not bethe last to do that in her life - in her world it goes in 1 yr and out the othe
