How important is any sort of dental-related work exp in an application?

I am an undergrad science student and after i am done with my undergrad i have set my sights on med and dental schools placing more emphasis on med. That being said all my undergrad work exp is in non-dental but related to the field of health care. So i was wondering is it essential to have DENTAL exp or is it possible to get away with that by having exp in working in a hospital and other related fields.

It is very possible. You don't really need dental experience, just experience that shows you want to work in health care and that you have an altruistic side. Good luck to you.

Is it easy to get into medical school without any medical experience or shadowing?
Its the same situation here...

You won't know if dentistry is a good career for you unless you have dental experience.

NAVY is right - several schools require dental shadowing or experience, it certainly will help your application. It shows more dedication

So in other words, you just want the DR title.

"So why do you want to become a dentist?" is a common question among interviewers. It doesn't have to get into the nitty gritty, but I'm SURE they won't let you get away without dental experience. I know a LOT of people who have taken the DAT, shadowed a dentist and still don't get accepted. I'm sure committing to it will have to show through your application. Otherwise, just be honest and answer "well, I kind of don't know" because that seems to me what you are really saying.

I also knew a kid in med school that was grilled on the spot when he said he focused on health care andwanted to help people. The interviewer responded "Why not nursing? Or social worker?" You need to stop thinking about the professions you could see yourself in and instead think about the profession you want. THE profession.

if i remember correctly at everyone of my interviews i have been asked about my dental experience where they expect you to them about what u have seen. and also expect questions like what about dentistry interests you most and lets hope ur answer isn't that it;s the closest to being an md.
