How important is it to put in a nickname? [mainly foreigners]

For ERAS profile, If i have a semi difficult name, should I create a nickname and put it under preferred name. [do programs even see the ERAS profile?]

A couple of years ago, a fellow saw my Asian name and strongly recommended that i get a nickname because he said i'll be more discriminated against (esp at top programs) if i have a non american name?

Any inputs?

It's a good idea, but only if you actually go by the nick name. Otherwise we'll just mangle your real name 20 times before saying something like "can I call you John?"

i can't even count the # of times ppl have done that.
