Do they give out spring, summer, and winter vacations? If so, for how long? Do we get holidays off? Recess?

I'm especially interested in Case and UNLV's......I've decided to hinge my entire decision on whichever has the longer vacation 👍

vacations are for undergrads

ps: i'm sure you can find an academic calendar on Case and UNLV's websites

if you worry so much about vacations....what are you gonna do when you get out of school and go into the real world? Are you gonna take 3 months off during the summer and 1 month off during the winter? I'm sure you can do that, but your patients won't be too happy about it.

UCSF has the first summer off, other then that it's the standard 1-3 weeks between quarters.

My first summer will consist of me studying all day for the NBDE1....which right now doesn't sound fun at all!!! 😡

well i value being with my family and i would like to know how long the vacations are so i can plan accordingly because we all have busy schedule. thanks for your helpful input though. i'll make sure to take that into consideration when i do open my practice.

so no one knows how long the vacations are on average?

At my school we have 3 weeks for winter break, 1 week for spring break, one week between winter and spring terms, and 2 months in the summer between D1 and D2 year (after that it is only about 3 weeks off for summer breaks).

Looks like Cleveland it is, great criteria though, you are going to decide by time off, I am sorry but that is just plain rediculous. You will save thousands in tuition by going to UNLV, I personally would decide by other criteria like if you think the school is going to help you become a good dentist, cost, faculty, city and living, etc
So at UNLV you have 6 weeks off a year. Three weeks off over Christmas, 1 week for spring break, 1 week between spring and summer, 1 week between summer and fall. Yep that is it, no long summer breaks.

I have a question that the Academic Calenders can't answer. After visiting some schools, I have realized some of the breaks are in fact, not breaks. Lots of times between quarters there will be a major commitment, such as boards or prep for clinicals or things like that.

For those of you in D-school, could you give a yearly break down of ACTUAL time off w/o commitments? Not that I'll be sitting and doing nothing but it would be neat to participate in externships at lots of other schools. I am just wondering if I'll have time to realistically do more than 1 or 2. Just rough guesses would work.

Back to ochem.....thanks!!

At Penn we get two weeks off for winter break, a week off for spring break (for 1st and 2nd years only) and during our first summer we get eight weeks off (second year we only get two and then from there on out we are pretty much at school 365 days a year. yipee...).
