I've been living in NY for 4 years now

Does that mean I was a resident of the state for 4 years?
Or is it 3 years? (considering it takes 12 months for resident status?)

Just living in a state does not mean you are a resident. You need to check with the specific state to see what qualifies you as a resident.
If you legally changed your address (on your license, bills, tax returns etc) to NY 4 years ago you have been a resident for 4 years.
And residency for tax/voting purposes is not the same as residency for tuition/school purposes, that also depends on the state and the school.

The internet seems to say I am a resident the instance all my bills and permanent address is changed to a new york address

I had this changed a week before I had moved to New York
Does this mean I was a New York resident a week before I even set foot into the state??

Confusing what the eligibility states...

I couldn't find a single nonacademic website with a clear answer

Oh, sorry I didn't see ur message

Thank you!!

But I was wondering, does this say that:

1.) I have to be in NY for a year to be a resident?
= 3 years of residency

2.) That I just have to be a NY resident for a year to be eligible for FAid
= 4 years of residency

#2 is a given, but wondering if #1 is implied

1) are you financially independent of your parents? When did this occur? (month/year)

2) is your home (principal residence) in NY? If so, How long had your principal residence in NY?
