For year 1-2's only.

I feel as though my lecture apperances lie somewhere 1/x^2 < x < 1/x 😕

Is this normal?

you've gotta do whatever works best for you.....if not going is getting you the results you want....stick with it....if you are not going and doing poorly.....go...

I agree...it also depends on the prof and notes....if the notes are sufficient and you don't get anything out of the lectures then, then no point going ... but some people like me have to listen to it one time before I can focus and start reading...many ofmy classmates don't come to class and study on their own and they are doing just fine....

Do you guys think it's hard for those students who don't go to class much to make friends in the class as easily? I really anticipate being someone who skips class to study on my own as much as possible, but I also want to be connected to the other people in my class, you know? 🙂

I go to class all the time and I *still* have no friends.

haha, funny stuff. same with me.

I go to lectures so that when I go over the stuff on my own later on it's not the first time I've seen it.

Also to socialize. Actually, mostly to socialize.

yeah, this is a problem. the first unit at my school was anatomy and during this time i went to class pretty much all the time, mostly because of microscope labs and dissection. during this time i made my group of friends of like 8-10 people that i hang out with post exam and every once in awhile during blocks, but i know many people's names and faces in the class. i'm not a big socialite, but i have other non-med school friends in the area and a fiance at home, so i am not totally ostrasized from the world.

in the beginning of the year everyone is looking for friends, so this is when to make them. go to class semi-regularly for the first couple months, then do what you like best. this is what i would recommend. oh and my friends give me **** all the time for not coming, but i have managed to convert 2 people so i am no longer alone. funny thing is, these 2 people honored there first exams after staying home!

Ditto

I read Dale Carnegie's "How to win friends and influence people," and I've been doing slightly better socially, but I still have no good friends.

If it makes ye friendless people feel better, a lot of people out there are in similar situations. The hard part is finding other lonely people, since they think the same way you might (that everyone else who wants friends has them...except you). It's rough.

CanIMakeIt 👍
The question must be :do you still concentrating at lesson all the time you are in class ?
then you will be

Well at my school PBL attendance is obligatory, so even those who go to no lectures are forced to have at least some contact with other students from their group.

Last term? I went nearly every day. This term, I skip probably 80% of lectures. My grades haven't changed.

I go a lot physically, but I'm not always present mentally. Some of the lectures are so boring that I pull out a blank sheet of paper and start drawing landscape portraits. Unfortunately, I leave the pages behind on my desk to finish the next day and then the janitor comes in and throws away my art.

I do the NY Times crossword every day in lecture. I'm not the only one doing crosswords in class.

I go to class all the time, the only way I don't go is if there was no way to avoid scheduling an appointment or meeting during class time. First, I figure that I'm paying a ton of dough to be here, I'm going to sit in my spot. Second, I don't want to get in the habit of staying home because I'm sleepy or unmotivated. I won't have that option soon, so I want to be able to know that I went because I wanted to because I thought it was the right thing for me.

That being said, I may go take my early evening nap now.

Right on. Say, I've been trying to get addicted to Sudoku but can't seem to get into it. And I'm really addictive, so I can't figure out what's wrong. Any thoughts?

Dude, that's freaky. I draw the back of people's heads, not landscapes.

Landscapes bore me.
I should consider doing crosswords though...

When I was a M1, I used to play Guess Who in class. I always needed something to keep myself entertained in class. I became obsessed with the idea of playing "Guess Who" with the students in the class. We all know Guess Who, 40 or so drawings of people, each with ridiculously distinct features that cover every possible spectrum of humanity. In my biochem class, it had everything. The kid with the enormous square head, the idiot white kid with a gold chain and a stupid hat, the crazy girl with dreadlocks, even my personal favorite, the red-haired girl with a tattoo of "The Lover" on her forearm. So I sat in the back and played. "Is it a man?" - no "Is She black?" - yes "Does she have a nose ring"? - yes. "It's that girl!"

That's a great story! Unfortunately, with only 30 students in my class, I can't really sit in the back and play games with others. I forced to a life of playing solitaire. I look up at the professor every now and then to look like I'm interested.

I'm beginning to realize how over-rated going to class truly is....As an MS1, I attended almost every single lecture given (they lasted from 8am to about 12pm, and then from 1-5/6pm, we had gross anatomy). By the time I got home in the afternoon, I desperately needed a nap. By the time I go up, it was roughly 8pm. I usually studied until about 2am, sleep, then wake up around 6:30am. The cycle would begin again.🙁

This semester, I'm much more effient w/the use of my class time. I've gotten out of this strange sense of self-imposed moral obligation to attend each and every single class. Classes do begin at 8am, as they did last semester, and last until 3/4/5pm each day 👎 . In general, if I feel as though I can be more productive at home during a specific lecture, I simply don't go. I'm begining to find out that I can stay on top of my work, and understand the material much more clearly, if I'm not being lectured at for 6-8 hours, with little or no breaks in between..

30 students in one particular class you're in, or 30 students in your entire (class of 20xx) class?
