Just curious if I'm the only crazy person who is thinking of applying to almost every school. How many schools are you planning on applying to and why?

11 Months later

Alright guys, it has been almost 11 months and I would like to see the results of how things went. Did you apply to too many schools or not enough? Hopefully this can help out applicants for next cycle.

I don't feel like creating an account on MDapps so I'll post a quick summary of my cycle here. Feel free to add as much or as little to your post as you want.

I don't feel like creating an account on MDapps so I'll post a quick summary of my cycle here. Feel free to add as much or as little to your post as you want.

Background:
Took my MCAT in July and ended up getting a better score than I thought I would. I had originally planned to apply at ~15 low/mid tier schools but ended up throwing my application to 29+ schools.

The stats:
3.4-3.7 GPA /26-29 MCAT

Schools applied: 29+ DO schools
Reason: Got my MCAT results back and didn't have time to research all the schools. I decided I would just dump my application everywhere and decide as the secondaries came in. According to napkin calculations I spent $1,200 on my primary. I didn't apply to TouroNY because of secondary price and another school I can't remember off the top of my head. I would have saved $525 if I only applied to 15 schools originally but I probably would have dropped DMU and WesternU for WCU and Touro Nevada.

That $525 bought me some time and a safety net if had gotten no IIs by November. I could just send more secondaries later on.

What I might have done differently... It costs $50+35x to send out your primary as a second batch. That is $20 more than what I originally paid but if I had gotten an acceptance I wouldn't have needed to pay this $545.

Secondaries: There is NO WAY I could have finished 29+ secondaries so I narrowed them down to ~15 places I really wanted to check out. The breakdown was roughly 6 Top tier, 6 mid tier and 3 low tier.
Reason: I tried to make sure that I sent out 1:1:1 secondary to each tier. I probably got a bit greedy by not applying to enough low tiers. Lets assume the average was $60/secondary * 15 schools = $900.

Results: ~15 secondaries, 3 post-secondary rejections, 8 IIs, attended 6 interviews, 1 post-interview rejection, 2 waitlists, 2 acceptances.

Post Game Analysis:
Positive:

I'm really glad I applied broadly because my only post-interview rejection was from a place that I thought was my 90% match.

Thanks to applying broadly I ended up interviewing at schools that I thought I would have no chance at (DMU, WesternU, and KCUMB) and got accepted into a fantastic school. I ended up hating 1 school so much that I hoped it would turn out to be a rejection. That experience really taught me how important these interviews are. You get to evaluate the school and they evaluate you as a candidate.

I only got IIs from 1/2 the places I sent secondaries to because my list might have been too top heavy and/or regional. I shouldn't have applied to OSU or OU-HCOM. AZCOM's tuition is too high so I didn't even bother following up when they said a LOI would help. CUSOM and MUCOM would have been better choices. If my interviewing skills were better I truly believe 2 of those waitlist decisions would have been acceptances.

The 2 interviews I didn't go to were new/low tier schools. That might have raised my acceptance number a bit.

Negative:
There are 2-3 schools that were regional and I shouldn't have applied to them in the first place. Got rejection from OSU and haven't heard from OU-HCOM yet.

LMU-DCOM never got back to me. I'm shocked about this because it's a pretty cool school and I thought my stats were good enough for them.

I really should have applied to more lower tiers. My interviewing skills aren't the best and if I hadn't landed that 1 acceptance I would have been rushing to fill out more secondaries.

My only regret was not applying to PCOM, MUCOM and MSUCOM. Those 3 are great schools and who knows how things might have turned out. Even a rejection would have been worth the $$$.

---
There is a point of diminishing returns. I would say 13-17 schools is the best bang for your buck if you're planning to apply broadly.

The rest either have regional bias or something weird going on.

Regional bias:
OU-HCOM - Public and require 5 years service post graduation. You sign a contract for this that takes affect once you matriculate. [3] [4]
OSU--86% in-state (about 15 OOS students/year) [6]
MSU - Public and $80k OOS tuition. 86% are IS [5]
PNWU -
TCOM - Public and required to take 90% IS [2]
VCOM -
WVSOM -
Rowan - Public - 88% from NJ [1]

Others:
CCOM - Pretty tough to get into unless you have competitive stats.

If someone can help me find sources for OOS figures on other schools that would be great.

This is going to depend on my mcat result that I'm getting in two days, but it is safe for me to say, excluding regional biased and "ultracompetitive" schools, I will be applying to approximately 15 schools.

You should really do research on which schools have a regional bias. Applying to them will just be a waste of time and money.

Will be applying to ~5 DO schools and ~25 MD schools. The DO schools are all in the southeast region.

Right now, I'm applying to 5 Allopathic (3 are in state), and 8 Osteopathic, Mainly because "there's strength in numbers". I picked the schools I did either due to location or some feature that appealed to me (ie, PBL at LECOM-B)

We're talking D.O. schools only or D.O.+MD ?

Just to give you all a good idea.... I applied to 23 schools, received interviews from about 6 schools, and got accepted into one. My scores were very good and I had good EC's/Shadow etc. I'd say the only thing lacking was research, although I did have some. It's very competitive and you are going to want to apply to a lot of schools. Especially, if you have your heart set on that MD school you've always had your eye on. Don't be afraid to apply to DO schools (which I am assuming you all are doing since you're on the DO forum). It will get you where you need to be in the end, and that's all that matters. Good luck to all of you and God bless. Hope it works out for you all.

I have 14 MD schools and 14 DO schools on my list. I'm sure I can cut out 10 or so schools when I get my MCAT results.

In my mind, if you want to go to the finals you should apply broadly.

what an awesome, level-headed response. refreshing to hear something other than DO bashing from someone going to an MD school. thank you for this 👍

Yikes! 1/23? I'll increase my count :scared::idea:

While I agree that applying to many is nice for a safety net also consider the tremendous costs involved in this process. I was really taken aback by that in my cycle (last year).... considering interview trips, seat deposits, second look days, etc
I'm not saying don't apply to many but also be real with yourself about whether you would honestly go to the school you are putting your primary into. Save the time, energy and money if you can rule out these kinds of things early.... I wasted money on applications to schools I received interviews at but realized at this stage I would never go there over school X or Y.

Just some food for thought

welcome to the most important crap-shoot of your life, my friends. cross your fingers, roll the dice, and hope your number comes up.

I'm applying to 5 DO schools and no MD schools. I'm an Ohio resident so of course I'm applying to Ohio University, which is also my #1 choice. I'm also applying to Des Moines where my fiancé is from, Marion, West Virginia, and New England. I visited Chicago and Kansas City and decided not to apply there. Good schools, just not a good fit for me.

TCOM, PCOM and PNWU. I'm not applying to Touro-NY due to the $200 secondary and location.

Other than that is there any other school with regional bias?

Just some food for thought

I've thought about this and I'm extremely worried about my MCAT. I'm a non-trad and wasn't accepted last cycle.

Even if I get into one of my top schools in the very first 3 months and withdraw from all others it would be totally worth it. If I get into a safety school at the very end it would be worth it.

Touro-ny because of the area?? It is in NYC! The area it is isn't bad at all compared to other schools. It's called gentrification ma man.

I REALLY wanted to only have to apply once. So, I applied to 32 schools total and don't regret it a bit - even though I still have not paid off my credit card yet. I ended up with 5 interviews, 2 acceptances, 2 wait lists, and one rejection (from the interviews). The schools I did get into were ones that I probably wouldn't have applied to if I were applying to a fewer number of schools.

And AAMC's income this year just doubled.

You have successfully made nearly everyone reading this thread SUPER paranoid about the schools they're not applying to. lol

So true lol. This thread makes me want to apply to every D.O. school out there. My dad is helping me pay the cost and he told me to apply to every one but I thought it would a big waste but now I am thinking otherwise.

Sorry to frighten people! But seriously, if you really, really want it the first time around, do whatever it takes. Those schools were MD and DO and I didn't care which one I got into. I've worked with both DO and MD physicians and have great respect for both and don't really see any difference. In the end, you're a doctor, and to me that is all that matters. I may have a huge credit card bill right now, but at least I'm not scrambling to decide on whether I should start reapplying for the next year or not. I'm grateful I made the decision I did.

MCAT 29Q
cGPA 3.3
sGPA 3.6
non-trad
certified EMT-B and EMT-I
6 years clinical experience

If you have a parent helping pay for it - I wouldn't even question whether or not to do it! DO IT! Become a doctor!!!!

Those are some good stats. Would you mind sharing which schools gave you an II? How early did you apply?

1-4...cant really afford much more than that.

Are these the schools with regional bias?

OU
OSU
MSU
PCOM
PNWU
TCOM

Those plus maybe some in the south (VCOM, WVSOM ect.) since they seem pretty location and mission oriented. The state school in New Jersey is also biased for state residents.

i'm applying to 11 DO schools and 1 MD (state school)

Just wondering, what is the least number of schools one should apply to in order to have a fair chance at an interview?

Applying to 19 of these. PCOM may fall off if I cannot get an advisory letter.

I agree with the poster above about applying broadly. I do NOT want to waste another year of salary and get married/have kids at an older age.

GO GO GO!!!!

By the way, the question was how many DO schools will you be applying to.

Was planning on applying to ~8 DO schools but according to everyone else's numbers, maybe I should increase?! I've read multiple times that if you apply to too many schools it can look desperate and you'll have a hard time convincing an interviewer that their school is your top pick.

Any thoughts?

Those applying 1-4 schools are doing AACOMAS on Hard Mode.

True. I applied to 29 MD schools and received 3 interviews, 1 acceptance, 1 rejection, and I withdrew from the third.

My stats were cGPA 3.64 and sGPA 3.67, 33O. 3 years research and a decent amount of clinical.

Just like the above post. All 3 interviews were from schools I would have never expected and would have thought of not applying to if money was tight.

It's a crapshoot. You gotta apply to as many as you financially can.

I believe they only know how many you're accepted to, and that's not until March or later.

OMS-2 here. I would say look at the school. Really look. What kind of personality goes there? Do they do your kind of research/ service? What do people say about administration, teachers, rotation sites? Then only apply to the ones that fit you. I applied to 14 schools and wish that it was only 10. Also, don't give too much credit to here say. Try to find out about a school from the current students. For instance, everybody likes to hate on TOURO-NV but when I interviewed there I got a good impression. Didn't end up going there but still. I personally wouldn't apply to more than 10-15 schools. Just my 2 c.

Lol I am going to an Osteopathic school xD lol

Didn't vote because I was part of the last cycle, but I applied to 22. Worth it if you can afford it and stay on top of it.

I wanted to go to my TouroNY interview so bad but man, the rent alone would have murdered me.

He probably only went to 1 or 2 interviews out of the 6 invites he got.

Exactly what I did. 7 IIs, attended 2, accepted at 2.

welcome to the most important crap-shoot of your life, my friends. cross your fingers, roll the dice, and hope your number comes up.

+1

Majority seem to be in the 13-16 range.

I'm guessing the average list is state schools + 12-15 schools that don't have regional bias or weird secondary/location.

Just submitted my AACOMAS. Applied to 20 schools. I will be applying to 5 MD schools I believe (Basically the schools in-state), but perhaps a few more.

Aggravating that AACOMAS doesn't accept AMEX as payment.

Question:

Do schools know/care about how long it took you to complete/return their secondary application based on when they sent it out? Does a slow return indicate a lack of interest in their eyes? Considering dividing up my schools by applying to some now and then applying to a few more a few weeks down the line to avoid secondary overload and have quick returns.

A few schools state something along these lines, I think Western is one. Check the instructions closely whenever you get your secondaries.

I'm applying to every school I meet the requirements for, so almost all of them. I never did take biochemistry though.

Does it cost more if you do not submit all of your primary applications together? Could I send out 5 one week and 5 the following week so that I break up the time that I will receive the secondaries?

I plan on applying to about 20 schools. I'm applying to so many because about time I finish my pre-meds, I should be entering med school when I'm about 39...if all goes well! Changing careers...
