How plausible is it to make extra $ in eve/weekends post-residency?

Suppose, if you are holding down a community hospital position that is 40 hours a weeks and you want to make some extra money (pay off those loans 🙄).

How easy/plausible is it to find/work another part-time job in evening/weekend(20 hours), do extra consults at another hospital, or moonlight at psych er/inpatient, or any other sources of income?

Thanks in advance.

Very plausible (assuming, of course, that there are no barriers to your gaining credentials).
We're dying for extra call coverage....

Just about every psychiatrist I know has some type of second job that is mostly part time money making. Even I'm working at 3 places right now in residency.

I'm sure some of it varies depending on the geographic area, but where I am in NJ, and this pretty much covers all of NJ, there's several doctors working at several hospitals for extra money.

One particular doc I know worked in about 3-4 instutitions a month, doing calls, consults etc.

Shortgage of psychiatrists=high demand.

At what point in the PGY1-4 scheme can one begin to moonlight to make a little extra cash?

Completely depends on the residency. Some allow internal moonlighting or "paid extra call" as early as PGY-I or II. Many allow it PGY-III or PGY-IV. Some don't allow moonlighting, either internal or external, at all. I personally would not interview at a program that did not allow moonlighting at some stage.

To those of you looking in the future, be sure to ask about the moonlighting policy on the interview, and review the section on moonlighting when you sign your contract. FREIDA is often wrong.
