As far as the grade replacement policy, how strict is AACOMAS. Will they nickle and dime the applicant? For example,

GEOG 100 World Regional Geography to be replaced with GEOG 1303 Local & World Geography.

MKTG 300 Marketing to be replaced with MRKG 1311 Principles of Marketing.

I was also thinking of taking Calculus I to replaced Business Calculus.

Please share any thoughts or experience. Thanks.

You might get lucky with Geography, but forget it for Marketing. You want a 1000-level class to replace a 300-level class? That's like asking if a 300 level Molecular Bio can be replaced with a 100 level Intro to Bio. No way. You're probably out of luck with Calc too. The courses have to be equivalent. These courses aren't.

If that's the case, I'm in a very very bad place.

Actually that's not entirely correct. The course numbers have nothing to do with grade replacement and everything to do with the course description of the class and number of credits. One school might number their courses a different way than another school would. If the courses are similar then the course number has no bearing on whether AACOMAS would replace the course or not. Scurred I would check the course descriptions or have the courses evulated at your current school to make sure that they will count for grade replacement. But it appears that both courses are in the Junior/Senior level, but that's just my opinion.

In what school would a 100 level class be considered junior/senior level? No school I've ever heard of. Bio 101 is not the same as Bio 310, no matter how you dress up the description. One is lower level and one is upper level. Call AACOMAS if you don't believe it, but you can not replace a junior level class with a freshman level class. It's not about course numbers. It's that classes are not equivalent. Just like regular Calc is not the same as Business Calc, a 300 level marketing class is not the same as a 100 level marketing class.

The Geology class may count, but the others will not. Call AACOMAS to verify, but I'm certain you can not replace an upper level class with a freshman class. Again, that would be like asking for a pass on Cell Bio with Intro to Bio. It doesn't wash. It's not the same class and not even somewhat equivalent.

Actually, I think that these courses might actually be lower level (freshman/sophmore) vs. upper level classes. From looking at various college catalogs and course descriptions, most 1st and 2nd level classes, start with 1 or 2, whether they are a 3 digit or 4 digit.

OP, how is your overall GPA? How is your science GPA? Do you have a good upward trend? If you cGPA is < 3.0 , I would most definitely take them over.

That is one of the sucky things. You mess up in your past in one school taking courses, and then when you retake them at another, there is a totally different numbering system.

That's why I advised him about getting the courses evulated before assuming that it will. I had courses that came from one school transfered as a completely different course level at the school I transfered to. That's the experience I'm coming from.

Gotcha. I'm only used to three digit course levels so I was assuming that the 3 in the 1300 represented upper class level.

No, it doesn't. As a non-traditional, I've attended multiple colleges. At every one, freshman level courses were 100 or 1000 level (1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, etc.) while sophomore is 200 or 2000, junior is 300 or 3000, and senior is 400 or 4000.

The marketing class is an upper level class from the looks of the number, just like a Bio 300 would be upper level. It's not equivalent to taking a marketing class that's 1000 level.

Okay I understand now. I'm a non-trad as well. Please forgive me for my ignorance. 😎😎

My overall gpa with legitimate replacement courses is about 3.29 (using the AACOMAS calculator by Lohkar). My ugrad gpa was 2.68. My Science is 3.9 gpa and my last 50 units is 4.0. I'm on a very upward trend. but 3.29 does not fall within the D.O. average ranges. My old school is in CA and I live in TX now.

Great advice. Thank you Dr. Punk. I will check with my current school to see what they think. You are an inspiration.

I see that the Business Calculus is a different course from Calculus I but I would think Calculus I being a harder class should replace Bus. Calc. but then I'm not AACOMAS, however I do appreciate your input.

These courses aren't.

where can we check if courses are equivalent? i wish to replace "Math 140 a short course in Calculus" with "Math A3 Analytic Calculus"

It goes by the course description in that kind of situation. Are the descriptions similar? If they're both on the same level (ie, both freshman classes or both sophomore classes or whatever), it won't be as big a problem if the descriptions match. You need to call AACOMAS.

This is very good information. Thank you.
