How to beg a professor for a higher grade?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You know, if you submitted this to the Prof for real, he/she might actually bump up your grade just because you made his day - of course that's true only if the prof has a sense of humor.

Honestly, that makes me sick. You feel you should be held to different standards than the rest of the class because...?

its not a different standard. professors make judgement calls all the time. they are "improvement" points =D

sorry that makes you so sick. you probably wouldnt fare too well hearing about all the brown nosing that goes on in the science classes. kinda sickens me too, but hey, you gotta play the game if you dont wanna be left behind.

Not that way.

I've managed to "play the game" just fine without having to compromise my integrity or moral standards; believe it or not, it CAN be done. It's called doing the work necessary to get the grade you want, not cultivating a sense of entitlement on why I should have received a higher grade that I didn't earn on my own merits.

If you don't want to "get left behind," get off your rear and do the necessary work to be successful. Except under rare circumstances, why should someone who didn't put forth the work be rewarded with a higher grade that they didn't work as hard as others for?

The first step is to search the web for comfortable knee pads...

 hahahahaa nice...

But to answer your question? I actually did get my grade changed in my Ochem II class, but not by "begging." I was very persistent on how he calculated our grades and ended up finding a HUGE error with our homework points which raised mine and everyones grade 2 letter grades!! (well it was different for everyone, but mine was 2) hehe it was amazing...🙂

excellent 🙂

Begging for a grad is ****ing pathetic. I have my high gpa because I actually studied my ass off.

I know some of you have posted here about begging your professors to give you a higher grade...how do you do this? What do you email them? Me and my professor had a verbal deal, but so far my grade online does not reflect this..should i email him? and what should i say?

You don't. Begging is something that little children do when they want another ice cream sandwich. Adults, on the other hand, take responsibility for their actions and work hard to achieve their goals.

I can't imagine what sort of "verbal deal" you had where you'd get a higher grade if you whined enough. I never did that when I taught, and none of my colleagues did either.

Ponybreeder, you've posted on here multiple times about your poor study habits, so I'm finding it difficult to muster any sympathy for your situation. If I was a professor and a student came to me asking for a higher grade for any reason besides "I found a grading error," here is what I would do:

1.) Laugh
2.) Tell them in no uncertain terms that:
- Their grade will not be changed
- If they want a letter of recommendation in the future, I will not be able to provide it

Grow up. Instead of posting on SDN to find ways to get good grades while exerting minimal effort, just work harder. It's really not that complicated.

I know of an instructor who, after she was nagged into a "minor" grade change (parents called the chair of the department) that she wrote a letter to the career center's pre-med committee (which coordinates med school applications) explaining that the student was an immature manipulating prick who was unsuitable for a career in medicine, or anything else for that matter. To this date, he is still re-applying. 😀

Hey, for the sake of being silly, I've been quoting myself now.

Above *happens*, students can get blacklisted by an annoyed instructor, and, what's best, they can't really find out because they haven't requested the input.

Don't forget, professors occasionally talk about really annoying students, so do try your best to get the "s/he's such a prick" reputation: While it will improve your GPA a little, it also decreases your chances of ever getting into med school.

Think twice and try to act age appropriate (at least not like a toddler).

This is just absolutely ridiculous.

Going to college, declaring yourself pre-med, and trying do not qualify you for an A. Mommy calling your professor and/or your department doesn't entitle you to a higher grade. I can't believe that you would even consider attempting to work out a "verbal agreement" (whatever that means).

On the one hand, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that you get what you don't deserve. On the other hand, I'm satisfied because this type of behavior will destroy you later.

I think the proper terminology for that would be oral deal.

Verbal deal, or ORAL deal...?

Amen to that, this **** really makes me glad I go to a school where 80% of the students don't know their gpa until after they graduate. The pre-meds are a much cooler lot than seem to exist elsewhere.

If you don't mind my asking, how could they possibly not know their GPA? You can basically calculate your own GPA based on grades received in the courses.

They don't release our letter grades to us. We just get a report that confirms satisfactory progress, and you have to talk to your adviser to get your actual letter grades. Most students just don't ask for them, I didn't ever get mine until the summer after my sophomore year...

My girlfriend gets at least one grade bumped up per semester by just emailing the professor. It makes me sick but it works for her. I am just glad that I still have a way higher GPA than her.

Don't ever beg for your grade. Earn it. Trust me, it would ruin the student-professor relationship and his/her respect to you. I think it's just better not to be desperate/ Especially, no emails! In person, you can mention your view but no emails. It can be interpreted wrong way...Be calm now (so, you dont regret in future).
