How to gross an ear?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Have you ever seen Reservoir Dogs? Just kidding...

If you're just getting the pinna which is mostly skin and cartilidge, it would almost seem like a gross-only situation unless there was a reason it was removed (invasive SCC vs. BCC or something) that required specific attention. But that's a total WAG answer. I'm curious to hear what residents have to say...

Most likely removed for a skin cancer of the ear. Margins and lesion, always the two key items.

a similar thought would be to talk to the surgeon and/or get the clinical reason for the auriculectomy. i bet that'll help guide you in what to focus on when grossing the specimen.

Probably have to shave some margins, but maybe not. Ears are always different, depends on how much they take off. Sometimes it's as easy as breadloafing the whole thing (like a lip).
