I got my very first interview in less than a week (at NYU). I'm really excited, but also very nervous. I'm not sure how to prepare. It's been a while since I completed my application and I barely remember what stuff I wrote about, so I'm planning to re-read it and mentally highlight somethings I might want to bring up.

They will most definitely ask me about why NYU, and I pretty much know why but I'll still do some more research on their program. (any tips here?)

Other than that, how else should I prepare?
Will they ask me about complicated dental procedures or healthcare systems? I don't know much about these.

Please help. I suck at interviews! I really want this to go well.

They won't ask you anything complicated like you mentioned, so don't worry about that. Like you said, just look over your application again. It may sound kinda silly, but the best advice I've received from someone was - be confident, don't be afraid. Just have a general understanding of what you'll say for the obvious questions they'll ask (don't memorize), and for the rest, just simply be yourself and you'll do great! :luck:

Aside from the above survey link, are you still in school? If so, see if you can get in touch with someone in career services or that teachers interview classes at your school. There is a professor at our business college who teaches a class specifically geared toward graduate school preparation and job interviews, resumes, etc. I went to him for help and he really showed me how to interview by making my responses into stories from my life that were positive, concise, and consistent with my overall views.

He had me make a 10 x 10 excel sheet with characteristics (leadership, dealing with challenges, diligent, manual dexterity, dealing with stress, education, research, etc.) a dental school would seek in interviewees on the left side and 10 of my stories of involvement/extracurriculars/etc. on top. When asked questions that related to those characteristics, I had a story for each. He also showed me how to make parallels for my stories for the medical/dental field. It might seem awkward to go speak with a professor you don't know, but in the end it is worth it.

Thanks for the advices! I'm definitely not going to memorize anything-it makes things even more stressful.

And NMC2010, that's a really interesting approach.

Congratulations on the interview! For me, NYU was super-conversational and casual. I didn't get any unexpected questions except for "when's a time you experienced a moral dilemma and how did you deal with it?" That one tripped me up and I sounded like an idiot probably lol. But otherwise, I would just have answers prepped for why you want to be a dentist, why NYU, and what sets you apart from other candidates. If you know those 3 things like the back of your hand and are honest about it, all the questions should follow suit from that. Got waitlisted there but overall, it was a good interview day.

It might sound stupid but also...be nice to your fellow interviewees. I was on one interview where certain kids had such a "we're competing for the same spot, leave me alone" attitude, that it was extremely off-putting. And everything you do on interview day is being observed and noted. Be friendly and personable, even though they're all your competition.
