FANTASTIC book! Although it was 1st written in the 1920's, I'd say it's principles are still relavant today. People don't change. His writing is full of stories and examples to show what he means.

Three fundamental principles in handling people
1. Don't condemn, criticize, or complain,
2. Give honest and sincere feedback.
3. Arouse an interest in the other person.

I've read the book and taken the course (basically a decent public speaking course). Very useful, especially if you plan to go to business school and are nervous about doing all those in-class powerpoint presentations etc. The other aspects of the course, I felt were largely truisms and a bit less valuable to me (but certainly as true today as when written), but if you are an inept conversationalist the skills could be helpful. The class was partially filled with individuals sent there by their major corporate employers, so clearly some people in big business feel that the course is worthwhile.

sounds interesting - i'll have to check it out.

My Dad jocks this book big-time. He's said that he'll let me borrow it, so I think I should add that to the summer reading list.

my dad has told me a million times to read it. im a little concerned about its antiquity though. its nice when books are able to relate to the present.

It is related to the present. The book's suggestions were as valid in the 1920's as they are now. Advice given in the world's best books (e.g., the Bible, Aristotle, Hobbes) never fade away.

Another good book to read is In Search of Excellence by Waterman and Peters (ISBN: 0446385077). The authors profiled the top companies of 1980 and found several patterns to running a good business. While How to Win Friends and Influence People is good on the interpersonal level, In Search of Excellence is best for company-wide behavior.

This is an excellent book and a quick read, although reviewing it often is very useful. I highly recommend it.

Another great book (possibly better) is "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey
