I know this is probably the last thing you are all thinking about, especially with the DAT to study for! But I wanted to start a thread on 'age'.

I have been reading messages on SDN for a few months now, and wanted to get a general idea of how old people are. Specifically, how old you will be or how old you were (if currently in dental school) when dental school starts in August 2006.

For example, I am 22 now, but will be 23 when dental school starts in Aug next year.

What about you guys?

20 right now and will be 21 next year and 22 the year after (hopefully). Let’s just keep our fingers crossed.

19 now, will turn 21 at the beginning of dental school in 2006

I am 24 now, I'll be 27 when I start dental school (if I get in) in 2008.

I'm 19 now and start D school this fall, when I am still 19. 👍 I hope I don't call my classmates "Mom" and "Dad" on accident. Wish me luck! :luck:

Ahh dame how many years did it take you to finish undergrad. Your the kid of your graduating class. Hell you’d be the kid of my intended graduating class.

Actually, I have a twin sister who is 2 minutes younger than me, so she was the kid of the graduating class. There was an 8 year old in my calc class freshman year, but I don't think he graduated from my school. I think he was just taking the math class.

26 right now and I'll be 27 when I enter school in 2006 (I hope I start in 2006 🙂).

I graduated from college with dual degrees in Math and physics. At the time, it seems like the right thing to do. But i kinda wish I had stayed in school a little longer. It was the best time of my life. Once you graduate and start working, it's not the same any more.... 🙁

Son. Grow up.

It may be cool to enter into dental school at such a young age...I can tell you that it sucks away all your energy and gives you gray hairs.

Another point, which may or may not be of importance to each of you, is that I still can't go hang out with some of my classmates if they decide to go to a bar or a club, which especially sucks since I'm in LA... =(

My advice to anyone who hasn't applied yet is to stay in undergrad a few more years and enjoy them.

I agree.....whats the point in trying to graduate so fast??? geez, i dont know anyone who cant wait to waste their youth working.....why dont u guys take a year off and do some travelling???? thats what I did during my undergrad years and its the best thing Ive ever done......

if you guys think u wanna graduate sooner so you can retire sooner, I dunno about you, but I would rather be 21 with no job then be 51 with no job.....

I entered dental school at 23 and I still thought that was too young.

For me personally, I want to travel once I know I have a stable career/job.
I don't think I would enjoy travelling right now because of the stress of an unstable future.

Once you have earned your degree and have a job that pays well, you can enjoy your time a lot better. You have more money to spend when you go out, can afford to take longer vaccations, drive better cars, hang with very different people, and you are no longer worried about certain exam coming up, paper due, letter of recommendation, etc.

Devil's advocate: when you have reached the above state, you probbaly have to support a family or at least worry about keeping your jobs so you can pay back the $200,000 that you borrowed for dental school, the $300,000 you borrowed for the house, the $40,000 you borrowed for the car... etc...!

There's more to life than school. Even if you enter dental school at 18, you're 22 when you get out which means you've been in school for about 20 years. That's plenty.

i turned 23 two days ago.. yaya (not). but anyways.

what is wrong with a little uncertainity?? are you ever going to be certain of anything, i am mean for all we know we could die tomorrow and ya i might be sounding like a cliche, but live the life you have now, wait for tomorrow to come tomorrow. -- i have started doing this recently after realizing that life is kinda of messed up and you will never know what it will throw at you, sometimes it will throw really awsome stuff, and other times it throws stuff you want to throw back at her. so yea enjoy what you got or at least try to.

now what was the question again?

100 % agree with you ,

I am 23 and wont start D school till 24 . 🙄 Hopefully if i get in .. lol

I took off 1 .5 yrs to work in the corporate world. It was a great experience but at the end ..this was more exiciting for me. I def understand how the youngins feel about flash cars , pay off debts , buy p diddy homes ...
The way I see it is ..you cant buy lost time or burnouts
so be careful .

I am also 23 and plan on starting dental school at 24 after which will be 2 entire years off due to working in the wonderful world of pharmaceuticals. The experience has been great and has made me realize that I want to be a dentist more than ever. Hopefully things go well this time around the application cycle.

Age is just a number, the lower the better, right?

I am the ripe old age of 31. But that is still a lot younger than most of your parents (hopefully)

i think its definitely a mistake to not go for your bachelors. you learn so much in undergrad, academically and socially, that i dont think you can afford to miss out. these 18, 19, 20 year olds are just going to have to learn the hard way and they are definitely going to struggle more than the ones who finished undergrad. you should travel, live a little, maybe work and make some money to pay off those loans for dental school. if i was 18 i would work for 3 or 4 years so i could make enough money to payoff debts that might incur, then i would enter dental school at 22 when most people grad from undergrad.

personally, im 22, graduated from berkeley with Neurobiology degree, travelled while in school, went through some tough experiences that made me stronger. so i am extremely ready to undertake dental school, academically and socially speaking. the teens here may be little einsteins, but there is no way they are mentally ready to go into this field. but thats just my opinion. good luck. laters

i must admit, i am still confused. if your bday is in december and you are 19 now, you will turn 20 in dec. of 2005. then you will turn 21 in the december of 2006. in jan it would be 2007, so when school starts in the fall you would be 21 1/2. silly 🙂

I'm 25. I turn 26 next month and start dental school next week. I spent five years in undergrad and 1.5 years working as a software engineer. Then I spent another year post-bacc for science courses. I wish I had made up my mind a little faster, but I think I will be alright.

Oh and I had a great time during those five years of undergrad; I wouldn't change that.

I think that all this concern about students that are too young to be entering dental school is all dependent on the actual person. There are a lot of factors that can help a person mature other than travelling the world and taking a few years off to work to seemingly pay for debts of dental school. I think that taking time off to work for that reason is a bad idea because no one, who has a bachelor's in a science degree in the first few years (with exceptions, of course), will ever make a substantial amount of money that will even lower that debt by more than a small fraction. I will be graduating one year early, which will make me 21 when/if I enter dental school in 06. I'm glad to think that I will be able to enjoy the success of my hard work quantitatively, rather than just seeing grades on a paper. Accomplishing all of that earlier in life just allows for more time to have fun! Although age has been a concern just because I am afraid that dental schools may look at it as a bad thing, I completely feel that I am capable of taking on the pressures and rigors of dental school. And for all of those other students who are even younger, if you feel prepared, then lots of props from me! 😀

I'm 26 and I just graduated from dental school but we had a lot of people older than me in my class - and some younger. There was a substantial cluster of 30-35 year olds. Old age didn't seem to slow them down although a bunch of people started having children third and fourth year.

Not too much of a concern as it was almost impossible to tell the 30 year olds apart from the 22 year olds both in terms of their professionalism or clinical ability (or physically in most cases).

The youngest person to start dental school with my class was 19. She is a DMD/PhD student (who will be there for awhile) and certainly up to the task of managing both sides of her career - even at her young age.

I couldn't resist responding to your thread. You make some excellent points, and I 100% agree with you. However, you seem like a mature applicant (it takes time to get to the level where your at). These 'little einsteins', havn't gone through the experience we have, which is probably why they are making the mistakes that you and I know of.
