How are you going to remember which HLA's are associated with what diseases?

I know that the HLA-DR2,3,4 and such are heavily associated with autoimmune diseases, however, each disease just seems so random. I know the associated with Ankylosing spondylitis HLA-B27

But....how are you going about memorizing these?

Also..for diseases, how are you memorizing chromosome numbers, or are you just doing the major stuff like...

Downs..21
Edwards...18
Patau...13
The Philadelphia Chr translocation
Ewings sarcoma t(11,22)

ect

For Ewing's Sarcoma, I pictured Patrick Ewing with an 11 on his jersey in the front and a 22 on his back. For Mantle Cell Lymphoma I did the same thing for Mickey Mantle (11:14). Kind of helped me associate these "random" numbers with something I was more familiar with, but then again I'm a bit of a sports nut if you couldn't tell. Incidentally, I took Step 1 yesterday and didn't have a single question that mentioned HLA types or any specific chromosomal translocations, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Memorize? For Step 1, maybe?
I spent way too much time studying this type of crap, you won't get more than 1-2 questions on Step 1 in which knowing a specific chromosome translocation or a specific HLA type is the only way come to the correct answer.
(Q-bank might be that specific though.)

PS: I guess you should remember those trisomies you mentioned, though.

stick the the basics. Don't worry about random ones. Philadelphia Xsome is very famous - know it.

No, i was just getting a TON of QBANK questions with HLA types and chromosome stuff....qbank is nuts

For Ewings I thought about Patrick Ewing being number 33 and 11 + 22 equals 33. For mantle I thought there were a lot of 1's (11:14) and they are kind of like vertical lines like candles, or candles on the mantle...kind of random but helps me remember.

Puberty at 13...Patau

Elect prez at 18...Edwards

Drink at 21...Downs

Von Ricklinghausen has 17 letters...Chromosome 17

My mother very thoughtfully made a jelly sandwhich under no protest...the planets from the sun outward, in order, including the asteroid belt correctly placed (earth=terra)

I can't take credit though...I think that they're mostly in FA and such...except the nerdy astronomy one (not mine either though...wish it was)...

Neurofibromatosis has 17 letters Ch. 17
Buketts 8:14 (I draw the 8 to look like little B for burketts)
Follicular 14:18 (Ffffffourteen Ffffffolicular Lymphoma etc).

I just do that crap over and over.

Funny that you mention thinking of the B as an 8, because that's how I remember a lot of that stupid stuff.

Wi13on's disease on 13
a1-ant14rypsin deficiency on 14

etc...

Wi11m's Tumor: Chr 11
Hashimoto'5 thyroidit5: DR5/B5

honestly, you should just make up your own tricks and repeat them ... u will be suprised at how a stupid mnemonic can get in your head

and i think i am going to make up a list and recite it the night before the exam... that is probably the best idea cuz none of this type of knowledge will last for more than a few days
