Howard vs Nova (DO) - Decision needed tonight

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
there is much less class in college than med school. being in class 2-3 hours a day in college is different from 9-5 (while wearing scrubs), and then coming home at 5 and having zero time to do anything else but have a quick dinner and hit the books till bed.

Imagine if you could have those 40 hours of lecture time each week to just study more efficiently on your own and at your own pace. For most people, that would help them substantially with learning the material, or at least make them more efficient to be able to do other things and actually have balance. Or at least, even if you like going to class, the choice to be able to make adult decisions.

Hmm, i see what your saying. Always good to hear something new.
(Not being sarcastic.)

By the way OP, have u received ur finaid package, that's another factor to consider. For me, that decided everything, I had to choose b/t schools in FL, NY & Midwest and despite my profound love of s. florida (hometown), i braved the cold and went for the cheapest school (with finaid factored in).

gdluck

im still looking through it but as of now there is not that much of a different in price

I really do not care....If it were me, I would definitely choose Howard for
1. MD program
2. possibility of research programs

It's different in medical school. Most people don't attend lecture and simply self-study and many medical students agree it is much more effective and conducive than going to lecture and then having to self-study anyways. I think one medical school student on osteo ( I think from Kcom) said by MS-2 only 10% of his class attends lectures daily.

Thats general impression im getting from current and past medical students. They barely go to class later on. However, i personally know some doctors from Nova and they said it sucked at first but they felt it may have helped make them better doctors. At least in college I was more of a self-study guy

why would you expect that to change in med school?

true. i am considering that

why would you expect that to change in med school?

I dont but I leave the possibility. I havent started med school yet so I do not know how I will handle the course load and what methods will be best. I may or may not need the lectures for better understanding.

Nova doesnt have research? I sort of doubt that...

As far as self study...hell I was never a self study a guy in undergrad/grad school....but in med school I havent been to class since the 2nd week of school. Its such an epic waste of time. @ PCOM we have software called tegrity that enables you to see the powerpoint on the screen, hear the prof, see the pointer/anything they are writing. So for all intents and purposes its the same thing as being in class...except you can skip things, pause, play, etc. Moreover we have handouts for most of the classes which tell you what the learning objectives are. So do I even really listen to most lectures? No.
While Nova really impressed me...that attendance policy is a huge dealbreaker. From what I recall they make you swipe your ID badge when coming in...so I dont know how youd get around that policy. As far as other people saying "oh I would never go to a school that didnt treat me like an adult," I am pretty sure this has to do more with accreditation requirements...at least at certain schools. But yeah man go with howard if you are a self directed learner.

Man having to go to every lecture would be brutalllllll

1. You will get a license to practice in Florida
2. Florida has no state income tax
3. The weather/women are fine

1. This is something you worry about AFTER medical school, not during..
2. You don't make income as a medical student, again, worry about that after.
3. You won't have time to enjoy said weather/women.

lol @ #3. What do you think med students never do anything but study? I still have plenty of time every day to wake up at 10, lift, go out at night if I wanted, etc. Its not the medieval torture machine premeds want to think it is. You will absolutely have time to enjoy going to the beach/women. (not to call you out..just wanted to make a point)

However, if you were stuck going to class every single day for every class you may have a rough time being outside while its light out

Its just the general impression i got that DO schools are much lower on funding for research. One school even told me that during the interview.

And while im not thrilled about mandatory attendance im just trying to weigh out which is the overall better school for me. Its close.

its hard picturing leaving sunny and fun Florida for up north but Im willing to for my education.

Your impression is correct...however there are STILL plenty of opportunities at the "higher tier" DOs. Plus NSU is obviously on a pretty big campus so chances are you could find research no problem if thats your thing. I never have done research before, and most likely wont in med school, so I never factored this in. I would look more into the attendance issue. See if its really as ironclad as they make it. And I dont blame you for not wanting to leave....I didnt want to leave after my interview!!!!! haha

well from what im hearing the attendance policy only applies to first year students so if you can make it past that you are fine.

haha...well first year has the worst course load generally vs 2nd year....soooo. We(the class goers) are in class from 8am to 1 every day. That sucks.

lol yes that does but i have comes to terms with the fact I will be stuck in a book my first year whenever I'm not in class.

Dude im a first year...guess what im doing? Im on SDN and surfing the net. I have an exam tuesday. As long as you are an efficient studier your life doesnt suck first year...trust me....I have plenty of time to do whatever I want.

Dr. Callahan? If it was in the clinic, I could understand that though. I think the amount of cleavage that's worn with a white coat is too common an issue to be honest. (I always did a facepalm at the girl in my class who had her hospital ID picture taken in a spaghetti strap tank top).

nah, it was Dr. Brooks. I agree with the policy too; I just thought it was a funny story.

I interviewed at Nova and was shocked to hear the dean basically give a 10 minute lecture about why mandatory attendance is CRUCIAL to being a physician. Talked about how it shows responsibility, duty and motivation or some nonsense that any rational person would refute. Every student there was like 'yeah, it's a terrible policy.' Many find very little time to do anything but attend class all day and then study at night. He cited a story about some rare medical diagnosis saved a patient's life, and that he remembered this only because of an obscure lecture he had attended. Wouldn't video lectures solve this?

It's a real shame because Nova has fantastic facilities, great rotation sites, and prime location in a 30 mile radius of miami and ft. lauderdale. I don't know anything about howard, but nova's mandatory attendance would be a deal breaker if I had the option.

The attendance policy is not enforced, and nobody will turly get on your case for it unless you're in poor academic standing (<70%)

semi-off topic... could you clarify why this is, and what prop 42 is, for the uneducated? (me)

Resolution 42 is a waiver so that your PGY-1 training can be approved by the AOA as the equivalent of an AOA traditional rotating internship, so that your ACGME is acceptable for the four states which require an AOA internship year (PA, MI, OK, FL). Since 2008 you can also use it for equivalency to OGME-1 speciality training.

This is not something to worry about now, unless you plan on practicing in those four states, though it is something to consider when applying to DO schools.

Recently though PA's state osteopathic medical licensing board (correct me if I'm wrong PCOM students) said they will no longer accept Resolution 42 and that graduates need to be trained in an AOA program, at least for their PGY-1. This has not yet been implement though, correct, but it is heading that way, or based on what people are saying here, has it been halted?

so it's a rule that the osteopaths created for themselves?

Yes, because those four states require an internship through an osteopathic medical graduate program in order to practice there. It addresses that requirement.

It doesn't have to do with the ACGME or MD licensing boards. DOs can get into ACGME programs, its just a waiver so that one can get licensure from DO state boards, which if you trained ACGME you don't need to do (but people do anyway or if they trained at a dually accredited site), except for those four states. Its probably also to stay in "good standing" with the AOA (don't quote me on that, I'm guessing at that one).

If I'm getting anything wrong here, hopefully one of the DO students or attendings on the forum can correct that.
