I'm excited and nervous for you guys! The stretch from January to Match was definitely a weird time when I went through it. It was sort of a haze to be honest.

Let me know if I can do anything for you; and just know that the next step (residency), while hard, is a million times better!

Haha, I've had a super chill schedule the last few weeks. I just can't stop thinking about the match though.

I'll be honest, I've been coasting since October. March 17 cannot come soon enough. Got a vacation planned with my wife a couple weeks before graduation. Couple rock climbing trips in the works as well.

How are you paying loans back? I'm maxed out and pushing $350K with a family. Rent is also pretty expensive where I'm hoping to match.

This is what I'm doing.

Apply for loan consolidation on day of graduation. Enter RePAYE immediately. Save tons of money. Let the government pay up to half of your interest.

Then I'll be refinancing to private loans upon completing residency. If you're sticking with IM or FM it may be more advantageous to stick with PSLF instead of refinancing.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the financial tip. So with REPAYE, the government pays half your unpaid interest, correct? So in other words if I pay the minimum with REPAYE, the government would be paying half the unpaid interest? So basically, my loans would still be growing. Would it it be possible to save the difference every year between what the I pay and the government pays? That way I could essentially come out of residency with the same balance I had when I entered. Any thoughts?

They bring you UP to the 50% mark, so if your income driven payment only covers 1/4 of the interest that accumulates, the government will pay 1/4 as well to bring you up to the 50%. If you consolidate and enter RePAYE immediately after graduation and before having an income when you start residency, your first year's payments will be $0.00 per month for the entire first year of residency.* So if you're paying 0.00 the government will subsidize the entire 50%. Year two, you have to submit your tax return from 2017 that will have 6 months of income, making your payments quite small for another year, with the government paying a hefty portion of your interest. And finally PGY-3 you'll be making full size income driven payments (10% of your adjusted gross income). Make sense?

*This is going on the assumption that your adjusted gross income during 2016 was $0.00.

Agreed. I'm hoping to match (next year) somewhere where the rent for 2 BR is at least 1800 a month.

Right now I'm on IBR and PSLF.

My next job is PSLF eligible. So if the program doesn't go away, I will be done paying within 7 years of starting regardless.

My next job also gives $35K per year in Loan Repayment. The State does too.

This works as long as I stay rural.

So after 5 years, I should be almost completely payed off. Unless all these programs fall apart (which is a real possibility).

But that's my plan at present.

I have the week off. I'm going to try very hard to remain busy.

Senioritis set in for me when I realized I was auditioning for a specialty my heart wasn't really in. But it accelerated after my rank list was certified.

glad to hear everyone is doing well. it's cool because i've been posting to these forums with you guys ever since we've been pre-meds. anxious to hear where you all end up.

best of luck.

Probably ****ting myself every day then getting rekted doing FM in rural Alaska.

Hey man, that Alaska program actually looks pretty impressive. Rural FM is hardcore.

Sucks to find that out during auditions, I hope it was early enough that you could apply to the one you really wanted.

Yeah, my motivation has been nonexistent pretty much since I passed the PE. I still manage to go in everyday and absorb something new, but honestly, I feel myself losing more and more medical knowledge everyday. I also can't imagine waiting another 7 weeks for the match results, that's just a special type of torture.

It really is, I think the Providence-Anchorage program is pretty legit!
Rural is where it's at. I'm heading rural next, I want to practice in a place that lets me use the entire scope of my practice.

This same thing happened to me. Switched from IM to FM about 2 weeks into application season. Big mistake, but I'm very very happy with the decision at the end of the day.

Trying to slide into them dual-accredited programs via the AOA right here. It's all going to be downhill from there.

Yes and no. I have a few possibilities in the correct specialty, I have a TRI as a backup at a place that has the program I want, and if worst comes to worst, I wait to try and SOAP after ACGME Match.

Basically all I have left are required rotations that don't interest me at all. All I need is one boring elective to fill out the last month. Preferably one that doesn't involve me having to show up.

Meh, they'll get over it I'm sure. They'll be sad, but they'll also understand.
wait why is that awkward? is it cuz the DO match is earlier than the MD match? So he's saying he might match DO but then turn them down? But once you've matched aren't you obligated to go there?

I'm doing both matches. Currently on a sub I at an acgme program which finishes Feb 12. Will be an awkward week if I match AOA lol.

WHOA! RAVIZZLE! I been following you for a while man. What specialty are you applying for? that's crazy dude.

You are an inspiration to the pre-med me when I used to stalk you!

YES! Same here! It's kinda freaking me out that I'm going to be a crappy intern. I try to study but nothing is sticking because I have a bad case of senioritis.

He's on an MD audition and he could match DO 7 weeks before the NRMP match, which means he'll be pulled out of the NRMP match and they'd know he couldn't match there.

Wow I'm excited for all of you. Sending good vibes, I hope everyone gets the match they're hoping for! I can't wait until I'm in your position in 4 long, long years.

I also applied to both matches. I've really liked the past several weeks of blissful ignorance, but now that we're a week from the AOA match I'm starting to get a little anxious. Something that's been helping a little bit is doing some apartment/recreational activity browsing near programs at the bottom of my rank list. It sounds silly but it kind of makes me excited about the prospect of matching at those programs, even if they're at the bottom of my list.

On another note, it's so nice to see some familiar faces! Wishing everyone luck this match season! 🙂

Indeed. What's everyone around here doing specialty wise?

Anesthesia in the house. (ACGME only)

FM, ACGME, felt wrong withdrawing from the AOA, but it made sense.

I agree, I haven't seen Nekobeats and Ravizzle for a couple years. Nice to see familiar avatars from application season and early med school.

Man I can't believe how quickly these years have gone by.

Honestly, I'm so ready to be done. Every time I get pimped I just wanna say "Umm... you misunderstand... I'm a fourth year... so... yeah"

Psych AOA, few TRIs as backups.

If all else fails, trying to SOAP ACGME psych.

Applied both FM and OB, but ended up going with FM

Yeah seriously. Whenever I get pimped and there's an M3 with me I want to be like "Uhmmm.. there's an M3 here, maybe you should ask them? You see, I've done this part already". Or if an intern asks me if I want to stay late I give them a confused look. They forget what it's like to be an M4 close to the match too soon.

I'm doing the exact same thing. I was also considering PSLF (I'm a psych resident). But with all the shake ups going on in DC these days, it wouldn't surprise me if they axe PSLF as well.
