HPSP - Computer Rental - I found a place

I've been looking for some time for a place that will rent out a computer for the HPSP less than $500 per year. I think I found it.

I sent them a message telling them some of the restrictions... (can't be rent to own) and am waiting to hear back. We will see. I am Army.

Why would anyone rent a computer for $500? It seems like you could buy a decent laptop for the same price.

Agree that it is not a great use of government funds, but the problem has (and always will be) been the laws governing hardware purchase. If the government buys the computer, it is required to be inventoried, tagged and maintained by a govt IT entity and used only for "official" purposes. If you were to do any personal work or load any non-official programs, that would violate the purchasing laws and some admin twit would get upset. The lease is the only way to get around that. And remember, it can't be a rent to own.

Sounds like this site would be a good way to go, although they don't seem to have Macs if that is your preference.

Several years ago a few students at Wisconsin created a company solely for the purpose of renting computers to HPSP students. You would place an order and then they would purchase a computer for you. Unfortunately, the group folded while I was in fourth year. I think it was called studentuniononline.com. The link no longer works.

If someone had the entrepreneurial spirit, he could form a new company to do the same. If the scholarship is really paying $500 a year for computers, that's a good amount of dough one could make off of the government.

I struggled to find a place as well. I even approached a couple of brick-and-mortar computer repair stores in my area to get them to write out a lease. I offered to pay in full. Everyone either thought I was trying to scam them or simply refused because they didn't do rentals. Then I found this company, HPSP Rentals, LLC. It seems that they launched out of California, but now they're open to orders from most states.

For a 4 year lease package I got a Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus. Reimbursement came pretty quickly (for Navy, anyways), and the paperwork was manageable. One caveat with HPSPRentals is that they finance the product through a one-time payment- Let's hope you haven't already spent your commissioning bonus.

I'm happy to answer questions about the product selection and leasing experience. I have to admit (though I also am just grateful that HPSP Rentals got me a laptop) that by providing "customer testimonial" I am working towards receiving my used device at the termination of the contract.

Has anyone heard of militarypcrentals.com? I am trying to decide if they are legit... but they have Surface Pro 3's for rent, which would be pretty awesome! $500/year.

Navy 4th yr HPSP here- I am currently renting with militarypcrentals and have had zero problems. I had actually recommended them to our school's SAMOPS (military medicine club) at a meeting last year and a few others started renting with them as well, also having a good experience. I looked into both companies originally and the products offered by militarypcrentals were a lot better (in my opinion) and not having to put down $2,000 at once was a huge plus.

I have a Surface Pro 3 from MilitaryPCRentals. Matt was really helpful. Army MODS approved it for reimbursement... now when the Army actually reimburses the money, just like everything they still owe for BOLC, I will be even happier. Surface Pro 3 is pretty sweet and I highly recommend it.

I just talked to a lower class-man last week who called one of the sites listed above and they were unable to rent a newer macbooks. They ended up going with Tiberius Computers which was offering some of the newer apple products.

My buddy just rented from Laptops For Military Docs and was really pleased. www.laptopsformilitarydocs.com He said it is a newer company but I checked it out and it seems more legit than the other sites I've seen...
