Hey everyone, I was fortunate enough to be accepted into my top choice this week. I’ve always wanted to serve in the military so I’m trying to decide between which scholarship program I should pursue. Can anybody tell me pros and cons of each branch if they are doing the same thing?

You can apply to Army, Navy, or Air Force.

It might be a little too late to apply to the air force. First boards were in December.

There is a forum for military on sdn that would be really helpful to comb through with lots of information. The process of applying is cumbersome and can take upwords of a couple months (sometimes longer) for obvious reasons (military personel are an asset). The good news is that 3 year scholarships do exist. I would say more, but honestly there is too much information to type out and you would be way better off looking through older threads on the military forum to get your answers.

Okay I will check it out. Thank you

You’ve got a bit of a late start. Talk to a recruiter ASAP.

Is it too late for three year program as well? I can't apply right at this moment because my naturalization application just got submitted..

I’m not sure how the application process works these days. Others on here have mentioned the Army and Navy reserve their 3 year scholarships for those who applied for the 4 year but weren’t selected. The Air Force offers the majority of their scholarships as 3 year. When you’re applying for a 4 year scholarship, you should be doing so the same time you’re applying to dental schools. People applying for a 3 year scholarship should start the process right as they start dental school. The application process takes months. However, until you’re a US citizen there’s not much a recruiter is going to do for you. You must be a US citizen to serve as an officer in the military.

I see. I knew that I had to be citizen to apply so that I couldn't even try for 4 year program. I'm just hoping the whole naturalization process will take less than 6 month so I can start right after my undergrad graduation - or before, hopefully.
Thanks for the input! It really cleared some points I was confused about 😀

I met a D1 in my school who is still waiting to hear back on the 3-year Army, didn't apply for the 4 year.

I have been in the Army, the Air Force, and now I am a current HSCP with the Navy. PM and we can talk about the differences.

I would double check this with a recruiter. I had quite a few bunk mates in my barracks during basic that were from Africa, Philippines, etc. who enlisted purely to receive US citzenship. Granted this was in 2009 when requirements were very relaxed and was enlistment not officer. But double check with a recruiter. All branches are different and rules change all the time.

I am all but positive that to be an officer in the US military you must be a US citizen, but the same does not hold true for enlisted.

Lol the first source found on google? IDK if that qualifies as a reputable source. I looked at US immigrations website and it looks like you don't even have to intend to become a citizen to enlist but it doesn't specify about comissioned. I feel like I've heard that you can't if your not a US citizen however I've never actually seen it written anywhere. Regardless, rules for the military change all the time and the army is currently understrength. Ask an hpsp recruiter. Worst that can happen is they say no or add some paperwork on top requiring you to go through citizenship to start.

Google it yourself. It's on every single site listed on the first page, including USA.GOV. Though I do appreciate the lesson in googling and "reputable sources".

My point was more-so, "look what a Google search can turn up".
