How useful is Human Anatomy for MCAT? Has anyone taken the independent study U of Iowa Anatomy class? If you did, what did you think of it?

Anything more than a very concise review of anatomy (directional terms, classes of muscles) is not very useful for the MCAT. What is on it is very basic. There is quite a bit of physiology, however. Just my humble opinion. Good luck.

e.g., do not try to remember the individual names of bones, muscles, blood vessels, etc., but you may want to review things like lobes of the brain & their main functions, along with very limited gross anatomy of internal organ systems. Far more important than gross anatomy are things like the "anatomy" of a nephron.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. I will hold off on taking Anatomy till after the MCAT. I am itching to take it may be because I will as a non-bio major it will help me in the med school once I get in.

and just as a disclaimer, I was assuming you were suggesting taking an IS course on top of your current course load.

If you are not taking anything or would take something else if not anatomy, I would say go ahead. Any science course will help to some extent, but I am just saying if you want to maximize your time efficiency, anatomy would not be a typical course to "gear up" for the MCAT. This is no reason not to take anatomy, if you can handle MCAT prep on top of it.

I had taken human A&P I & II before the MCAT, and was also a tutor. I really feel like the course helped me. I had a lot of questions about the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system. Granted, every question in the biology section could have been answered with knowledge from classes other than A&P. However, A&P gave me a very broad range of information that I felt helped! 😀

You will have your entire life to learn about anatomy. Why not take this opportunity while in undergrad to learn about philosophy, literature, anthropology, history, or heck even, cooking?

Because I am a non-trad and already have a couple of degrees and 15 years of full time job and several years of cooking behind me😀

Know directional terms, words like flexion/extension, basic gross anatomy, basics of cardiac/renal/pulmonary function.

still... your gonna forget anatomy before getting into med school so why bother? Anatomy is nothing but pure memorization. I don't think I can remember a single thing from anatomy except the very very basics.
