HuMed app '11

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yep. Folks on CC received their interview dates already :xf:

I just read on CC that Humed applicants are required to have a year of Bio and a year of Chem under their belts before they apply. Does anyone know if this is in fact true? (Bc I was under the impression Humed didn't encourage us taking pre-med sciences before applying, therefore I didn't start my sciences yet...). Thanks guys

no you can have it before you apply if you want, but you just need it all completed before you matriculate/before you do their summer program that they talk about on their website

I don't know about that; after all, the NYT article was early last cycle.. it's been a while since that came out. Generally speaking though, I think it'd be interesting to get the figures for applied/interviewed/accepted for this year..

Hey guys!!! I'm so sorry I haven't responded to all of your questions and PM's yet (I promise I will), I've had two weeks straight of midterms and now a huge lab report due Monday. This is what biochem: chemistry version does to a bio major...

Anyway, I just wanted to quickly respond to this comment. I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you: the normal number of applicants to HuMed is ~300, but last year's cycle (the one I applied to) saw 660 applicants, over double the amount they usually see. They interviewed 125 applicants instead of the usual 100, and accepted about 33-35 (I don't know the exact number). The NYT article was VERY influential in getting HuMed more applications, and made the entire process so much more competitive. I would expect a similar number of applicants this year, maybe a few less just because the article came out a while ago.

As an example, FOUR students from my school (a school with close ties to the HuMed program and Mount Sinai in general) were accepted to HuMed two cycles ago, but during my cycle there were ZERO accepted from my school.

Also, I would generally not worry too much about interviews at this point! It's a bit odd that interviews have only just started to come out: I got my invite last year November 2nd and interviewed on the 29th, which was considered "late" in the process. They might be going more slowly this year, though, since the Director of Admissions is brand-new (Basil Hanss). He's a really cool guy, and I'm sure he'll read your applications VERY thoroughly: he actually talked to me for half an hour about why I was ultimately rejected from the program, and gave me very helpful advice on how to apply to med schools in the future. I would really only do this after you've gotten your final decision, though, since it might be strange to make this call beforehand.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! I didn't ultimately end up going here, but it was a really cool school, and actually pretty similar to where I will matriculate! You'll all do great 😀

^Thank you so much for the advice!

New week now guys... new chances for invites.. 😛 Good luck..!

also fyi they don't update interview date on the status page before they send you an email, so you don't have to neurotically keep checking it (unless you want to) 🙂

Thanks.. was wondering that. I nee to stop doing that.. 😛

Cool. Thanks Xodus for answering my nerve-wracked question.

And thank you too KP.

I have a (maybe stupid) question. Is Basil Hanss the one who reads all the applications and makes decisions about interviews? Or is it a committee, and he's one member of the committee? How does it work?

Anyone hear anything yet?! Nothing here..

Nothing here yet either. I have a feeling the number of applications increased significantly for this year, which would explain the lagging of interviews.

I was hoping another round would go out today, but I haven't heard anything. Hopefully on Friday? The waiting is so hard!

Is friday a special day when it comes to sending letters like the ones we are waiting for out? I wasn't aware of this... 😛

i mean i got mine on a friday, but i don't think that means all of them come out on fridays?

I just received an invite for an interview today (Wednesday). It appears that they are not being sent only on Fridays.

incidentally.. what day are they up to now (for int's)?

Hey everyone. I just called Sinai and they said no interviews are being given out today. It seems to me that interviews are being released once a week. This week it was Wednesday and last week it was Friday...not entirely sure though. It's hard not to lose hope at this point in time but if it doesn't work out, it's not the end of the journey. Nevertheless, congrats again to the interviewees and good luck to the rest of us!

^Thanks for that.. I really don't want to give up hope yet, but.. :scared:

Maybe I'll call and test the waters as to how many interviews are left to be sent out or something... ? 😱

hey guys ! Any more interviews? I'm still waiting on mine ! (fingers crossed)😕🙄

SO ANXIOUS !

Lol at this point, I'd prefer for them to tell us whether our applications are flat-out rejects and are not being considered for interviews. Waiting until mid-December is torture. Sometimes, I can't even concentrate on my studies haha.

I feel like I didn't get in at this point... I don't know what to think! 😕

Forgot to call today. Will do tomorrow.. 😱

Let us know what you find out Midd. I've pretty much given up too, but it may be a tad premature. Espadaleader says at the top of this page that interviews were given out well into November last year...hopefully there are a few more rounds of interviews to go. Fingers crossed for everyone who is still waiting!

I believe it's too early to give up hope because they've been inundated this year, hence no time to even scratch their heads. I'll start giving up hope come Dec.

"inundated" ..? Do you have #s?

Read previous posts. Apps increased significantly this year.

Not true necessarily...that post was referring to an increase in apps TWO years ago, and he guessed that there wouldn't be much of an increase (if not a slight decrease due to a lack of more recent notoriety). but that's all guesses...not based on any real numbers this cycle.

Actually the post was talking ab last year (not two yrs ago), but anyway let's use common sense - of course apps increased significantly this year (the article only came out last year, hence still in people's consciousness. Therefore humed will continue to see a rise in app #'s, at least for some time).

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/30/nyregion/30medschools.html

Article from July 30, 2010---which is why last cycle went up from 300ish to 600+ apps...didn't mean two years ago in my previous post, meant two cycles ago (i.e. not the current cycle, but the one before it). i'm sure apps could still be increasing, but i doubt it'd be a 100%+ increase like the previous cycle saw.

anybody else anxious that tomorrow is the last day of the week ?! The refresh button on gmail has become my best friend. grr the anticipation...

Yep 🙂 Sterngirl would the "stern" perhaps mean nyu Stern 🙂

Sorry I didn't get on here till now. Been busy.. many exams this week 😱

Here's what I heard guys..

*Friday, November 18th, is the last day Mount Sinai will be sending out interview invites.*

The woman on the phone said that there are "just a very few" remaining spots. Again, after next week, no new invites. 🙁

Few remaining spots left? Have they been accepting people already?

Hey everyone. I just called this morning. They said they are practically done with sending invites and that there are literally 2 or 3 more left... I wanted to be in this program badly and I was hoping they would see my passion for my major. Nevertheless, congratulations to those who received interviews. I hope that those who are really interested in the humanities and medicine are the ones who get in the program.

Good luck to everybody! It's been quite the mental and emotional journey 🙂

Whatever happens don't let the result of this destroy your motivation.

It seems that Mount Sinai is looking for a very specific set of candidates for this program. I would not take the outcome of this application as a comment on your achievements or qualifications for medical school. Most of the factors that they seem to be weighing most heavily are largely out of your control and in truth very different from what would make you competitive for the traditional AMCAS route.

Well said, Revolution010. Best of luck to you and everyone on here. This journey is just beginning.

And thank you Sc2fanatic for your words of wisdom and encouragement.

We should still maintain this board, to support each other through Orgo. Haha.

It's official. I just got my rejection letter 🙁 Good luck to you all!

FWIW.. I expect that this new SciMed program will mean that less spots are being allocated to HuMed. Should be interesting though to see how both approaches play out.
