So I'm not really sure why this thought came to me but it did 😀

Sooo, has anyone gone to an interview hungover? How did it go? The worst of your cycle or did you somehow, by a great stroke of luck, manage to think through that headache and shine?

Personally, I feel like I might be able to pull the latter and even pull off the best interview of my season! Haha that would so totally be my life: doing better drunk/hungover than sober and totally prepared.... 😛

I know you're trying to be funny, but a friend of mine took a shot before an interview because he was so nervous. Unbelievably he got in! A little liquid urging, you know? LOL😀

I wasn't trying to be funny: I really did want to hear stories like that of your friend. They would help prove my point 😀 hahaha j/k That's awesome though, for your friend!

if you stay with a host (or md phd night out), good chance you might indulge. i doubt you would get drunk, but i'm sure it has happened.

the hangover looks funny

Oh, this is how alcohol or drug addicted surgeons appear in medicine.

I don't see why anyone would do it. I wouldn't risk wasting my time, money and opportunity on a fun night of drinking

After three times being exhausted because I couldn't sleep with the 3 hour time difference, I started having a couple beers right before I went to bed. It worked out for me. I was much more rested, rather than tossing and turning all night. The night before my WashU interview I actually went out with some of the students the night before and after my interview. I never was hungover though, as I kept it to just enough to make me drowsy.

Having one or a few beers with students the night before isn't the same as going to an interview hungover. Going to an interview hungover is a colossally stupid mistake. If you can function with a hangover then it probably wasn't much of one to begin with. It is normally pretty obvious when that person walks in. I used to have a beer before presentations in Germany because it lowered my inhibitions enough that I wasn't paranoid about grammar mistakes, but one beer in the afternoon is a little different then binge drinking out of hopes that it'd improve my chances. I wouldn't suggest the one drink thing in general either...Practice is a much better cure.

oh, this is a great idea! and there's no way that someone with medical training (your interviewer(s)) would ever suspect that you were hungover during your interview! please try this and report back!

He'll be fine, so long as he brings enough to share. Preferably not regurgitated.

You can usually smell smell alcohol on someone, even if it was only one shot. One of my clients thought it would be a good idea to have a shot before going to court. Bad idea. The judge pulled me aside afterwards and said "counsel, you should tell your clients not to drink before coming to court." Like it was MY fault...

I'm a girl 🙂

and I'm assuming the alcohol smell would be gone, one would have to be totally showered and ready but hungover i.e. bad headache, maybe stomache, just kinda like being sick

plus, relax I was just makin fun... I wasn't going to try it (until I have at least one acceptance 😉 )

My bad, next round is on me. 😀

isn't there this one crazy ass guy on the boards somewhere where he applied to one single school - Yale

It was on his MDApps... and he had a LOT of comments, haters and fans. i was a fan haha

I don't think I ever went to an interview not hungover...there is only so much to do in places like Albany, Buffalo and Omaha...and other places force you to drink (New Orleans and Los Angeles) Wha What!!

I mean seriously...what else is there to do besides drink and watch skinamax in some places?

Thats exactly what I was thinking of when I saw this thread...

The dude applied early decision to yale, because his dad/uncles/grandfather were all yale-educated MDs, and ended up taking several shots of whiskey before his interview. He got in though...

Awww, I just searched SDN for him, and I guess he got banned for trolling... Can't find his MDapps either.

That sounds like a good idea. I bet it works for some.

This is exactly what I did for my MCAT. I took a six pack to my friend's place cause I wanted to stay near the test site. I drank two of them real quick right before bed and slept like a baby. I'd do it again in a second for an interview.

Do it. My biggest regret in the whole medical application process was not drinking a little the night before my MCAT, and not taking it at noon. I am so glad I drank a tad before my interviews, it made all the difference in the world in terms of rest.

I know I most certainly have... I had an interview at UC Davis, and wow did I drink the night before that one! My tolerance had gone way down from the partying that I used to do. Any ways long story short, interview went ok.
I also did this at University of Miami, Cornell,NYU and Vanderbilt..

Maybe thats just a drinking problem?

yeah! that's exactly him! well at least i found out he got in, always wondered what happened to him

I hate to "kill the buzz"...

One of the main signs of an alcohol problem is the persistence of drinking despite consequences, and denial. I'm in recovery, so I feel I have a degree of experience and knowledge with which to draw on 🙄

You can't always smell alcohol--I was able to hide my drinking (and use of other drugs as well) quite effectively. People can hide it, so that's not the main factor. In addition, just b/c you go to the interview drunk or hungover doesn't necessarily qualify you as an alcoholic.

A key aspect to addiction is the idea of choice. Even better stated, addictions are defined by the decreasing lack of choice, and increasing power of the addiction and subsequent consequences on the addict's life. Despite the consequences, the addict cannot, on his or her own, abstain from the behavior or substance. Instead, the addict will find ways to protect the addiction. I personally became an expert at lying and hiding it well. Or, when I had a seizure b/c of severe dehydration linked with my alcoholism, I resolved to buy Gatorade. As a crude analogy, it would be like giving a patient with clogged arteries some blood pressure Rx's, instead of performing surgery to remove the clogging....

I'd prefer someone to have a dismal interview due to being drunk/hungover, b/c it's an opportunity for them to see how their substance abuse is effecting their lives. It is more likely they will enter recovery.

But let's say you do well in the interview and get in. If you are an alcoholic, you'll say, "See, I don't have a problem (or, see, I can handle my problem). I can keep drinking..." Not everyone with an issue like this experiences consequences right away, hence the term functional alcoholic.

Obviously, there's issues down the road of safety and ethics and whatnot about performing under the influence. But this is not a good reason for recovery. It must be out of a desire to really live your life to the fullest. It must be out of self respect; b/c you want a better life for yourself. If you want to be sober for any other reason, you will relapse. Moreover, you SHOULD relapse, b/c recovery is more than just eliminating consequences and being more acceptable to other. I don't believe in lecturing people about the evils of addiction. Do it for yourself first, and you will be a better doctor second. Recovery is awesome--I haven't looked back at all. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Firstly, congratulations for being able to identify your problem and being so successful in combating it. I can see why you would want to share your story and warn people of the perils of drinking.

However, I do not think anyone (certainly not I) was tying to imply that a person doing this would have a problem but this thread was just for laughs and possibly a funny story.

I know...I'm not trying to be Serious Sally lol...I read a few of the posts and felt compelled to reply. I suppose it was more my insomniac stream of consciousness than anything else....😴

To reiterate: I don't think that if you drink/party, even quite a bit, then you have a problem.

And I admit, it IS pretty funny...

I went to an interview for a residency program quite hungover...but I had done an away rotation there, so they knew me already, one of my LOR's was from one of their faculty, etc. And residency interviews in pediatrics are pretty low key anyways.

Unfortunately for you none of this happened. You are in your second semester of college 😉
