I'm a DO student applying to both osteopathic and allopathic residencies in ob/gyn. I don't believe I would be considered competitive and have been pleasantly surprised with interviews. I have had six osteopathic and three allopathic interviews to date. Of all the osteopathic programs, I was most impressed with one, but it is in a location that would be a bit of a culture shock moving from the south to the north and far away from family. Additionally, I have truly enjoyed the allopathic programs that I have interviewed with as they seem to have the whole package for me: location and volume and resident cohesiveness.
This brings me to the question...the osteopathic residency I like the most is the one that is in a questionable area for me. Say they offered me a position and made it clear that I would be highly ranked in their program. While I really like their program and also think I would be a good match there, I really enjoyed the allopathic programs perhaps even more and they have the added benefit of being in very good locations for me.
Would you take the osteopathic position knowing that it is a sure thing and believing you could be moderately happy there despite uncertainties about the location? Or would you take the chance on the allopathic residency programs knowing that you're not the most competitive, but having at least been granted interviews (which have gone well)?
This is just tearing me up trying to make a decision between osteo and allo. My first inclination is to try for the allo positions despite the risk, but I am definitely fearful of giving up a certain position in the osteo residency and possibly finding myself having to scramble with few options at the end.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated! 🙂
