I bombed the first biochem exam and got a D-, should I withdraw from the course?

There are still 3 exams left. If I get a B or higher on all of them, then I can still get a C in the class. However, the average of the first exam for the entire class was a C-, so I doubt the next exams will be any easier.

I've never had any problems like this with other classes, my science GPA is around 3.80. Will medical schools look down on this W?

Also, is biochemistry absolutely necessary if I plan to go down the MD/DO route? If I drop it, then I will try to retake it next year (I'm currently a junior).

Thanks for any input!

A C- average is very unusual, that means ~40% of the class essentially fails (D+ or below).... see if your professor curves.

If not, I don't see the big deal in taking a single W. I'd rather have that than a C (which you don't quite have yet!) tanking my sGPA.

You should take biochem. It's required at many schools and is heavily represented on the MCAT.

Thanks for replying! Yeah, I've never taken a W before which is why I'm so nervous. The professor said at the beginning of the course that the entire grade is based on the 4 exams, so I don't think he curves. I'm hoping to get a better start next year.

The possibility of dropping out of a class makes me feel so dumb, though. I studied the same way for this class that I did for all my other exams and I've never had this problem. :/

You do what you have to do.

In its level of information, biochem is on a different level. I studied for weeks in advance with Anki.
