Hey all,

It's that time of the year and I would appreciate some opinions on where I stand with the schools I'm applying too.

Here are my stats:

Undergrad: UC Berkeley

DAT:
22 TS
22 AA
20 PAT

sGPA: 3.5
oGPA: 3.44

200 hours volunteering at a dental clinic
300 hours doing research
many hundreds of hours of volunteering

I'm applying to:
Arizona
UCLA
UOP
Western U
UCSF
University of Illinois
Tufts
BU
Maryland
UMich
UNLV
Columbia
NYU
UPenn
UWash

If you guys could help me ease my nerves I'll give you free hugs 😛

You are fine. You'll receive many interviews this cycle, there is nothing to worry about. Just be personable when interviewing and you shouldn't have trouble landing many acceptances.

You're in good shape. Once you receive your interview offers, which I believe you will, I suggest going over the interview feedback material on SDN. Interviewers will often recycle questions, and I believe it gives you a better idea what to expect. Also, echoing what hope45 said, you just need to be personable and confident. Best of luck.👍

I'm applying to:
Arizona - if this is ASDOH you might want to remove it unless you have 800 or more hours of volunteering
UCLA
UOP
Western U
UCSF
University of Illinois - they take almost no OOS students so I would remove this from the list
Tufts
BU - this school is plagued with problems and has a pretty bad reputation, I would remove this from your list
Maryland
UMich
UNLV - this school accepts a very small amount of OOS students and only if they apply really early. If your app is not in yet I would remove it from your list
Columbia
NYU
UPenn
UWash

If you guys could help me ease my nerves I'll give you free hugs 😛

I'd also add schools like Stony Brook, UMDNJ, Temple and Buffalo. While they may be far from you their tuition and reputation warrants a shot at admission. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses guys! It's relieving to hear that I'm not in terrible shape for this application cycle

UW only takes 8 OOS. Most of them are WICHE. You have a slim chance.

Do not apply for UIC/Michigan/Washington if you are OOS. UIC has two spots, Michigan gets 1500 applications for 10 spots, and Washington has eight spots. You are wasting your money, especially considering that your statistics are good enough that you will likely get admitted somewhere else, whether public or private, and the OOS tuition rates for the aforementioned schools are going to be much more than any other school.

I am not sure about UIC or Washington, as I am not as familiar with those schools, but you are not correct about Michigan. I interviewed at Michigan this past cycle. Michigan's class is around 110, with 30 to 40 of those being non-residents.

Michigan was probably my #2 behind Tufts. OP, I suggest you keep it on your list.

omnipoDent, I was just going off what the admissions personal at Michigan told me this March when I called to ask about their admissions decisions. Doesn't change the fact about OOS tuition though, and that OP's statistics are good enough that he probably doesn't need to apply to more than ten schools.

You must have misunderstood what you were told by the personnel in Michigan's admissions office. I find it unlikely that they would tell you completely false information. Regardless, I attached that link before with the information on their website which shows the class profile. I was told the same thing in person when I went up there for my interview.

To the OP, with regards to UIC, I think you could leave it on there. They have 6 spots for out of state students. Your DAT is above their averages, so I believe it's not a wasted shot if you decide to apply.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make about the tuition. The tuition for the private schools on his list will be at least as much or more than paying out of state tuition for the schools you're listing. I agree that he can cut down the list some, though. Removing Washington and BU, as spacecake suggested, would get him/her to 13, which I believe is a good number.
