As of now I applied to 9 schools and only one of them has contacted me saying I was waitlited. After I sumbmitted my fall 2010 grades in which I got a D+ in human anatomy they rejected my application. I'm am beginning to thing the rest of the 8 schools are going to do the same especially since I'm only a sophmore and don't have a bacholers degree. My question now is was it even a good idea applying to these schools? Most of the schools I have applied to require a 3.0 gpa and higher but because of my D+ I now have a 2.96 gpa. I am working really hard this semester and plan to achieve only A's in my classes but I can't help but feel like it would be kind of pointless because by then they would have already denyed me.
Do schools consider spring grades as a part of the admissions process?
I have also retaken the pcats this jan I'm still waiting for my scores but if they are a derastic amonut of improvement would I have a chance?

All I'm saying is do I have a chance to show colleges I improved within the year? I really want to start this fall 2011.

I don't know of any school that factors in spring grades for their admission decisions. Some might factor in your most recent PCAT, if you get your scores back before their admission window closes. Realistically, someone with a sub 3.0 GPA and less than 2 years of college probably shouldn't be getting into pharmacy school in most instances. If you're struggling that much right now, pharmacy school is going to be a real kick in the pants. Hell, it's typically a kick in the pants even for people who breeze through undergrad, from what I've gathered.

Take another year or two of courses. Make yourself a more competitive applicant and better prepared for pharmacy school at the same time.

Do these school require anatomy as a pre-req? If so you will need to re-take it because most schools do not accept less than a C or C- in pre-req classes.

some schools from what I recall do accept D+, but most are C. by the time you get your spring grades most schools have already decided so I don't know how much of an effect it can have. However if you do fail and get accepted then obviously that will effect their decision. Honestly I think you have to pursue a BA/BS and have some time to improve. Look at it as a positive thing. You now know what to improve on and you have the time to do so and at the end you will be a stronger and better student. one or two years in the whole picture (life) is not going to make much of a difference!

I hate to say it...but you may get the same result from the other 8 schools, especially if;

a) they require Human Anatomy
b) your gpa dropped below their minimum

Not too mention you got that D recently and it was not from some ancient class, so now you will show a negative trend in grades. You may still be able to get a reply from a school if they do not require the above, but its going to take a pretty good PCAT score.

Your spring grades will not help at all in the admissions decision; however, almost all schools will require that you maintain a C- on any followup courses upon acceptance, so make sure to get good grades for the rest of your classes.

It might help if you list the schools you applied for...also your PCAT score may be available to see online if you do not mind spending the $20 to take a look...

Why not put off pharmacy school for a couple of years and get a degree? It'll give you time to develop intellectually and raise your GPA.

👍

Going through pharmacy school after feeling prepared is much better than struggling every week because you wanted to start early.

If you're ok with high stress and frustration and manage that well, then maybe. But personally, I wouldn't go through a situation like that.

So do you think if I dont get accepted this term around and I reapply in a year or 2 with better grades and possibly a BA would it effect me somehow because now i would be considered a reapplicant?

I completely agree with this and with what everyone else has already posted. You definitely need to retake that D+ and get a better grade. Depending on what schools you plan on applying to, even the bare minimum of a 3.0 GPA is on the low end of the scale. You need to boost that GPA up and get more experience. I think getting a bachelors would benefit you and when you reapply, you can show the adcoms how much you've improved as a candidate.

I understand My D was recent I knew everything was going to go downhill from there. The problem wasnt because i wasnt able to handle the coursework I was getting decent grades on the exams all above average and then my prof emails saying i got a 69.46 average and the class average is a 52 and hes not planning on curving. When i asked for a C- just to round it up he said it was impossible. I worked really hard in that class studying over 20hours per week but the prof's tests were crazy 14 questions per station in only 2 min!! it was tough. I am going to retake the class in the summer hopefully.

I applied to:
Virginia common wealth
University of Virginia
University of new england
LECOM erie
University of Maryland Eastern shore
St.Johns Fisher
Western New England
D'youville
MCPHS_ wos campus- waitlisted first then Rejected

I guess I should just aim for improvements and not think of this as a downer

I know exactly what you mean. I got 89.7 I believe (it was such a long time ago that I can't even remember) which is probably a good thing (time heals everything)...It was one of the first classes I took in college and I asked her if she could round it to 90 so I can have the A and told her how hard I worked...My mom had health problems and almost died with all the documents and she said everybody has life problems you should've dropped the class if you wanted an A and you were getting 89s. Now this professor in my lab reports would take off points because I didn't put a period (.) at the end of my sentence. (CRAZY HARD CLASS)

I have many of these stories, but what I learned is you do your best hope for the best and react logically, rationally without emotions get on the way and handle it and move on!!

I also wanted to do 2 years of pre-pharm and 3 years of pharmacy school for the total fo 5 years, but this is my 8th year! Sometime life doesn't happen as you plan! learn from it and move on!

years from now you will come here on SDN and share your D experience when you are graduating pharmacy school to someone else that just got a D and is worried 🙂

Thank you!! 🙂 You really gave me such great advise! I guess time shouldnt have me worried, I'll take it slow if I dont get accepted anywhere this year.

I'm moving on!! I can stop hassaling the mailman everytime I see him at my door lol 🙂 thanks I guess I'll just earn a degree and then apply again afterwards.

Congrats Misfire 200! You will definitely save major bucks on tuition in Georgia. However do you mind telling me your stats for UGA?

"...react logically, rationally...". I very much support the highlighted. But in order to achieve that, determination remains the vital key here, regardless of which route you choose to take to achieve your goals. You must be sure of what you want, and you must be sure that you really want it. Nothing beats that when it comes to a source of determination.

If you can fully harness that concept, the stars will be your limit...assuming nothing else is higher 👍

You said you applied to mcphs worcester...and since you do not have a BA, you had to take all of the pre-reqs they require right? I dont think anatomy was on there. Did you complete all of their pre reqs or did you have split courses ((such as chem 1 and not chem 2)). This course if I can remember correctly was not listed on the requirements. Also, what were your other grades like? I know they are pretty competitive. I am in the same boat as you, however, they want me to retake 6 courses before I apply. 😡

I thought worcester campus REQUIRES a bachelor degree before matriculation... if your a sophomore.. you wouldnt be able to get your degree by fall '11 anyways right??

Anyways, its not over till its over. 8 more results to see right?
