I lost my 4.0 after 3 years

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lost my 4.0 in my 3rd year/final semester (graduated early), and at first I was little ticked because it was by 4 points out of 1000, but then I realized that I was graduating, still had a good GPA, and that that difference wasn't going to make or break getting into medical school. You move on and get on with your life.

Damn SDN has gotten crankier or I've just gotten nicer.

Maybe both.

👍 Good post.

I wrote this to see what people would say. No, I don't have a 4.0 but I'm not a troll! Relax. I knew that the title of the thread would get a lot of readers, and I was right.

Thanks for replying. People like you are the reasons why I decided to post a thread like this.

That makes you a troll.

Never had a 4.0. I missed an "A" by one question on the final :scared:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA I never liked people who work hard. Just because I knew I could never work as hard as them and it annoyed me.

I never tried and I pulled off a 3.85 which is pretty average. I suggest you be like me because its not worth trying.

To the OP... I completely understand how you feel. Exact same thing happened to me.

Oh wait, except that feeling of "damn an A-" lasted about 2 minutes. Then I moved on with my life.

Seriously dude, who cares?

I'm tempted to say that I'm shocked that so many people have replied to this thread, but I'm contributing to it so....

P.S. Checked out that EM thread.... =/ Brutal 🙁

I loved my 3.82 gpa, given that I had an attractive high maintenance girlfriend throughout college, played two varsity sports, belonged to a fraternity, and partied my ass off virtually every weekend that my team was not on the road. I would not have traded any of these experiences for a 4.0, although I do wish that my girlfriend had been a little less high maintenance.

Good one...?

😕

1 whole B, ouch.

You better just drop out of college and start working at McDonalds... 🙄

Genetics at UCLA was not that easy

You have no chance at medical school with that severe downward trend.

So are you saying that you have never complained about anything in your life, because whatever happpens to you ,someone else always has it worse. Granted the OP still has a very high GPA ( that a lot of people only dream about) but he/she is just going through some temporary disappointment which they will get over. No need to call it disrespectful

VR

He said that he feels better because he is reminded of how his complaints are so trite compared to people who are dying in the hospital. It changes your frame of reference.

First off, the way that all of it was worded was really odd. The OP basically said that getting a small amount of points off her 4.0 made that day the worst in her entire life, and while all of us want amazing grades, that kind of obsession isn't healthy, and honestly, there are plenty of people in the world that would laugh at her "worst day ever". People are dying, losing their jobs because of the economy (and some because of the oil spill). However, this is moot because of my second point:

In a later post the OP said she specifically made a post like this because he/she knew it would get attention and wanted to see what happened.

While I'm sure no one has never complained about a crappy day, most put it in perspective: "It could always be worse." And for some, it really is.

You might want to work on your reading comprehension. Did I say I never complain? No, because that would obviously be a lie. I said that I often feel better after leaving my volunteering position because the patients often remind me that problems are not that bad.

Granted the OP still has a very high GPA ( that a lot of people only dream about) but he/she is just going through some temporary disappointment which they will get over.

Disappointment is natural. Making a thread about it is a whole different story.

No need to call it disrespectful
What exactly are you referring to?

What a weird species you humans are.

😛

you will be all right without a 4.0..
just think of it this way.. people always get nervous or upset if it's their first time doing something, for example your first time.... ..... 😀
go get another B, I am sure you will feel much better off, and will stop worrying about your 4.0 right away. Trust me

Girls never make posts like the OP, it is always guys, for obvious reasons. God bless women, we need them.

I guess people aren't reading through the responses to OP because people keep responding as if this really happened. So to make this 100% clear, I will put this in caps...OP SAID THE SCENARIO IN THIS THREAD IS FAKE AND HE/SHE JUST WANTED TO SEE HOW PEOPLE WOULD REACT TO IT. I'm sorry, I'm just sick of people feeding this troll. So people make threads for their personal experiments now? I bet OP will try to pass this off as research on AMCAS.

Exactly. But like I said, the trolls are always guys. I just wish that women liked college football with more passion but at least they are not pathetic little trolls like this little punk.

Yea I was just being politically correct, but there is probably a 99.9% chance that the troll is male.

Being a chick, I wish that women liked more sports in general. While I do enjoy doing female things, the ones who are always freaking because they missed their pedicure appointment and have to wear tons of make up to go to f*cking Wal-Mart are really annoying.

Makeup is awesome. Sports are awesome. Missing appointments is just rude!

Plus, I appreciate anyone who wants to avoid becoming a Person Of Walmart.

I understand why people are saying that you're a troll, but having been in your position, I know you are not. I've had conversations which basically boil down to the original post with a few friends of mine in real life who have also been in the same situation. No, it's not wrong to aim high, and there is a psychological factor of having a 4.0 which makes it really suck when you lose it. However, it's far from the worst thing that can happen and I'm sure a few weeks from now you'll realize that "today was the worst day, I'll never forget it" was going wayyyyy overboard. Put things in perspective and cut the hyperbole.

One B will not make a difference. The medical school admissions process is not as random as it seems. I have trouble believing that sometimes, but I know that is is true from what I have heard from people with more experience in the process. An exceptionally high GPA and MCAT score gives you a ticket to consideration at top schools that few other qualifications can. Whether you have a 4.0 or 3.95 doesn't matter, it still earns you that ticket. Once you've established your credentials quantitatively, it comes down to the qualitative factors to decide whether you get in. Nobody is going to give a candidate with a 4.0 a full ride over a candidate with one B - the decision between those candidates will be made on things other than their numbers.

The one thing to watch out for: when you have a 4.0, it provides a ton of motivation to keep getting perfect grades in other classes. I got an A- in a class which I know I would have got an A in if I had taken it before I lost my 4.0. I'm not really upset about it, because my GPA is still awesome and an A- won't hurt me, and when it comes down to it I'm not sure it would have been worth it to put in the amount of work in that class that would have been necessary for the A. But just watch out and make sure that you don't get lazy, even without realizing it.

In terms of positives, I've heard from engineering friends as well as contacts who hire engineers that within that field, a 4.0 is sometimes viewed with suspicion because people with perfect grades tend to be the type of people who don't relate well with others. That's an unfair generalization, but outside of medical school admissions, having a very good but not perfect academic record might actually be ideal.

He is being called a troll because he admittedly made up a senario to encite reaction. Basically the definition of a troll.

Maybe they should have planned their day out better, and they wouldn't have missed it 😛

The people of Wal-Mart scare me.. but some of those pictures crack me the hell up.

I remember when I took a prereq course at CC, this kid said "because of this professor, My 4.0 gpa is done". I asked him "for what class? .

He said "trigonometry"

Yea i lost my 4.0 due to a math class at a CC.

K one thing I DO have to say to some of the people on this topic (even though I agree the OP is a tool)....

Just b/c you have a 4.00 or something close to it doesn't mean you have no life... this is for all the people smugly proclaiming they had a g/f and a 3.8. I kept a 3.99 and had a g/f throughout university, went out several times a week, played sports, did stuff I liked etc. I have friends with 4.00s who were drunk half the time and friends with 3.7s who worked their @#&es off, and vice versa.

High GPA and having a life are NOT mutually exclusive.

you got a 3.9 at santa monica college. even if you had a 4.0 at SMC and kept your 4.0 here at ucla, it wouldn't mean anything. CC = joke.

/this

Medical schools use credits from all schools in determining your gpa; you never had a 4.0 to begin with.

And either you're a troll post, or just wow...

Edit:
Thanks for replying. People like you are the reasons why I decided to post a thread like this.

You'd make an awful doctor.

Close thread, ban the OP and move on to the next thread about- what class should I take, or does 1 w really matter..

Thank,
the sane people still on SDN

Don't you feel much better?

After I lost my 4.0, also during 3rd year, I felt so much more relaxed. I never got another B and just graduated Summa Cum Laude. But I'm grateful, losing the 4.0 helped me approach coursework with less stress.
