Hi everyone,

I'm currently a junior community health major and I had some questions about my chances of medical school I wanted to tell my story and I really need some advice.

I started off as a biology major on a pre-med track.

My first two years of undergraduate was absolutely horrible. Ex.Car accident, friend passing away. My gpa started to tank terribly. After the end of my sophomore year I decided to switch majors because I wanted to graduate on time and I was very behind if I was a bio major. Currently, I'm sitting at 2.488 CGPA.

My Gpa is extremely low and my science gpa is even worse. Now that I am in a different major I can't take any pre med prerequisites because I don't have any space in my schedule for it. So I can't bring my sGPA up at the moment. I have multiple W and Fs in my transcripts. All of my advisors told me there's no hope.

I was considering doing nursing but I realized I really want to do medicine. I've gotten myself together now and I really think I can tackle these prereqs. But I really don't know if I can salvage my gpa.

I wanted to do a diy post bacc but I calculated and even with doing that my gpa still wouldn't be competitive enough. I also wanted to do a smp or a career changer but my gpa is way too low.

I would really appreciate any advice!

If you made it to the end, thank you 🙂

How many science credits have you done so far?

Contacting the registrar and seeing if they can do a full semester or two of retroactive W's to remove some F's would be a good idea. A postbacc is largely about showing that you can do well and are a different student from the past. It is usually shown as a separate line with its own GPA when medical schools review your application.

Even if you can't take pre-reqs now, it would be helpful to prove to yourself that you can handle college coursework in your new major. This would also help your cumulative GPA as well.

If you can show an upward trend on your GPA/sGPA and do well on the MCAT, I would say you have a shot at some of the more open minded schools. If you're able to get a clinical job post-graduation, that will go a long way too.

I have around 30 credits! Also, if I do a post bacc my sgpa still won’t be at the 3.0 but my cgpa definitely will.

There will be some schools that have sGPA cut-offs but there should still be plenty of DO schools that would consider your app after acing a postbacc.

I wanted to do a diy post bacc at a community college, would it be unnecessary to also do a traditional one after? Because I saw that there are post bacs with linkages to med school.

If you would like the particular linkage from a formal post-bacc/SMP, that is something you can look into. Only some of them do guaranteed matriculation though, many limit it to guaranteed interview.
