I am currently a junior undergraduate majoring in psychology. I am very interested in psychology which is why I chose the major, however, my low science gpa (3.0) has made me consider switching to biology and minoring in psychology to help boost my science gpa by taking more science classes. I wouldn't be behind at all because I had to take science classes anyway for dental school. Is this a good idea? What should I do? Thanks so much guys.

I'm not sure if switching to biology would be the best thing. If you have a hard time handling psychology classes, I'm not sure if you can handle the upper division bio classes. Maybe you might be able to raise your science gpa for the lower division bio courses (aside from biochem), but the upper div. bio classes and labs are a bit more intense. I'm not sure what university you're at but switching to biology major would mean you would need to take G Chem, O Chem, and a year of physics to obtain the major (at least it was at my university). All the power to you though if you finished them all since you said you took some pre-reqs for dental school.

I actually enjoyed taking psych classes because I felt it was very interesting and the grades followed ( as opposed to memorizing the dryness of biochem), but that's just me.

Likewise, you're a junior and I'm not sure if your university will kick you out after 5 (or6) years with approval from the dean to stay extra long. If they try to force you to do the entire bio major in 3 years, it might be a tough ride.

I personally would stick with psych but take bio classes or any science related classes to help your sGPA out. Switching to a bio sci major in the junior year is quite a bit of work, but it's really up to you. If you can elaborate on what pre-reqs you've finished so far, I'll try to map it out for you (at least based on the UC system here in California). Good luck.

i also have to agree with the above poster, that switching to a biology major to improve your science gpa may not be the best motive to switch to biology. most people at school have to bust arse to get good marks in biology courses (at least in my experience) and you are always competing with those gunnin' pre med kids as well. as for what i would do, i would stick with psych, since you like it, and take science classes that you are interested in. i've found that if i'm interested in a class, i will do better in it and put more time in it naturally. g'luck

I am majoring in psych because it interests me, however, I know dental schools really focus on your science GPA over the overall GPA and that is what I need to raise. I have 6 more psych classes to take before I get the major and that is a ton of credits and potential science courses I could take instead. Not to mention I'll end up graduating with like 140-150 credits because of all the science classes I need as well as the psych classes. It'll be very expensive. I felt that by switching to a major like bio, which I wouldn't be behind at all, and minoring in psych...it would still show dental schools that I am well-rounded.

Since you seem very open to switching to a bio major, I say go for it. You'll be in a good position to raise your low sci gpa. Obviously, the best way to raise a sci gpa is to do well in as many sci classes as you can handle. Don't let people try to convince you that being a bio major is an extremely difficult thing. It's not. Plus, it would probably get you more accustomed to taking more science classes during a term. Undergrad is nothing compared to the science course load you'll see in dental school. I think you'll be fine. You just have to push yourself. Good luck

Take what you like. If it interests you, you will do well. If it does not interest you, you will struggle and coursework will become laborious. You will soon find out if you made the right choice. It is always "easier" to learn new concepts if it holds your curiosity/attention.

I agree with the not switching people, the main thing is do well in the science classes you are in. Also, rock the DAT!!!

If you think you can handle all those science classes and bump up your gpa than go for it and switch. Interesting or not, grades are all that matter.
