Guys i need some information on some stuff, but i cant seem to find anything, maybe im a little hectic right now thats y, but....

KK, here we go.

My freshamn Yr in College went terrible i dropped out of both my Science classes (chemistry and Biology). I dropped while passing because i did not want to recieve a "C" on my GPA or transcript i would rather take the WP on the transcript. I am retaking the General Chemistry during the summer, right now, i recieved a C in the first semester, hoping to make a B this semester. 2nd semester.

My GPA is in the 2.5+ area right now, this will improve seeing as i have had alot of difficulites adjusting to college life, and my time managment improved alot towards the end of the year, but it was "too little too late."

When i go back to college i plan on taking Organic Chemistry and Biology at the same time along with 2 blow off classes. Some kids say that had much more trouble with Gen Chem, than Ochem. I think maybe it is the same for me??? but not sure. I am Only hoping to make a B in Ochem, seeing as our course at Austin College (sherman, texas), is very very tough. According to the kids at AC, if you can Recieve an A in Ochem at AC you can go to med school, because the rest of the science courses are Cake at AC, compared to Ochem.

During my time their, i accumulated nearly 20 hours of Community Service. I am Vice President of the ICA organization on campus. I will be a sophmore, and a vice president of the BIGGEST organization on campus. We hold 3 very big campus wide events.

Here is where the help comes in, plssss.

I've heard that kids can go to Carribean Dental Schools, or Some schools in India Straight out of HS, and study at their school for 4 years and do one year internship and they become a doctor of that country. Then move to the states and do another 1-2 years and become a US doctor. Now is this possible?

Please help as i wish to be a Orthodontist. If this is true, if someone can direct me to the schools which have this program. And tell me my chances on getting into those schools, and how to apply for these schools.

Also if someone can tell me if i should stick to the US school or if i should consider going to the Carribeans or to India to persue my carreer there. Or if i should just give up and look for sumtin else. Be honest, please, i would like to know the truth because i dont want to waste time anymore.

If i go back to my college and Take ochem there, do you suggest remaining the VP of the ICA organization? I feel it will look really good on a Med school application. But some feel it is too time consuming. But i think i can handle all of the pressures and time that comes with the ICA organization. Do you think i should stay?

Again Please Help, it will be MUCH appreciated.

First of all, most importantly make the decision between med and dent. Don't be wisshy washy the whole way through. Get experience in both fields and pick. Second of all slow down with the crazy carribean talk india blah blah blah. You just finished your first year, you are not doomed by any means. You have plenty of time and classes to take that will make your gpa more competitive and mature you as an applicant and an individual. Your gpa will only reflect how badly you want to achieve your goal. Third, never just aim for a B in any class. At an interview are you going to tell them that you took ochem at Austin College and expect them to shi*t their pants when they hear you got a B? Last I heard Austin College isn't the new Harvard and an A is definitely attainable. My ochem professor only gave out 5 A's per class and God damn I was one of them! Fourth, I've never heard of your organization I have no idea what the hell it is but thats an EC and its good..really good. stick with it. YOur hours of service...increase them. Last and very important.....ENJOY YOURSELF!! Take a deep breath and live a little while in undergrad. If you give yourself agita worrying all the time over a gen chem grade you will drown in dental school. Drink a beer or two or ten and relax. Simplified, you're fine, stay serious, stay focused, but not in excess.

Okay...deep calming breaths...that's step one.

Sorry, but you seem a little over-stressed a little too early. There really isn't any reason to start thinking about going to bermuda and going a back-route to dental school, and don't worry about wanting to be an orthodontist...one step at a time...first let's get you ready for dental school.

You are young (in # of years you still have of predental education) so don't stress. Take the required courses, do your best and try to study and do well and the DATs. Good GPA and DAT scores will be the biggest boost to getting you into dental schools. If you do well in the next year or two of school, it will make up for your crappy freshman year GPA. Even if you GPA isn't great overall because of those earlier years, if your making 3.5+ in your last couple years, dental schools will recognize that you have improved.

Definitely continue with the clubs and community involvement. Also, look to volunteer in an ortho office or just start working in an office.

Finally, the back route into dentistry you are talking about is a hard one and one that may be shutting down soon. At any dental school in the united States they usually only have a few spots for international students who have a dental degree from another country, and year after year, more non-US dentists are applying for these programs, so just like getting into regular dental school, it is getting harder.

Also, it would seem like as a US citizen, you'll have some explaining to do when you apply as an international dentist...I mean, I would wonder why you were going to a US university and then suddenly moved to another country to study dentistry and then immediately came back to the US after an international dental program to then become a US dentist without ever having practiced dentistry in another country using that degree...It just would be an oddity and I'd start asking about.

And very very finally, I've been hearing rumors that the US is moving into a Canadian-like system of reeducating international dentists, which is, no more 2 year programs, if you wanna be a dentist in the US and have a degree from another country, tough, you still have to take 4 years of dental school in the US. This is just a rumor, but it could happen...so don't count on the backroad into dental school still being there in 4 years.

Alright awsome, cool so i shouldnt be sweatin after my first year, dang, yall , you dont know ive been sweating since last year december.

Quick question if i go to carribeans and become a dentist at the carriobeans come to US i have to go to 4 years of dental school?

If you do decide to go to the Carribean, then go there as soon as possible coz they are holding the Cricket world cup in 2007. You can't miss that, now can you!

Hey AJ,

I already wrote this...though it was buried in that huge reply

Word in the circuit is that they (ADEA, ADA, the people in charge of dental education in the US, etc) are trying to dissolve the international dentist program. That would mean, yes, after you become a dentist in a foreign contry (which much of the Carribean is) you would still have to go to 4 years of US dental school to become a US dentist.

Currently, you can come back and do a 2 year program that is mostly clinical called the "international Dentist" program. No one knows for sure if they will get rid of this program next year, in 10 years, or ever at all, but they are talking about getting rid of it...so be warned.
