Hello

I am currently a 28 year old students who is attempting to get admissions into dental school. I applied this year for my first time but doubt I will be getting in due to my lower GPA All these years I never reached out to anyone to ask questions or what steps I should be taking to increase my chances of getting into school which I believe was a huge mistake. I wrote my DAT this summer for the first time and have been taking a few upper level undergrad science course. Now I tried calling schools to get information but I got the cold shoulder from a few of them saying that they can not help me as it would be unfair to other applicants if they told me steps I should take to gain admissions to their school and others just seem to busy as was expected at this time of year. So I was hoping that I could get help in these forums. I was wondering if a post-bacc program is worth it or do I keep taking undergrad upper level science courses? If post is something that is a good idea then which programs have been popular with dental schools and if anyone knows of any programs that have January start dates. I will really appreciate any kind of input from anyone and I just want to say thank you in advance...

a couple of points, assuming you finished you undergrad 4 years ago, you might need to check with the school to see if they even accept you credits. Anyhow assuming your credits are valid and you have done an arts prog (prog without many science courses) i recommend taking upper year science courses to easily boost your BCP/ SCience GPA's. If youve done an science based undergrad, do masters

I have taken alot of science courses over the years along with the pre-req's. Is it true that my first year chem and biology courses might not be accepted anymore because I took them 7 - 8 years ago?

Hey, you need to increase your GPA if your DAT scores are not very competitive. I think you should apply for a Master program instead of post-bachelor degree.. When the ADEDAE breaks down your GPA there is a section that counts your Graduate GPA separately from undergraduate classes..I think if that section is filled will look more appealing to Dental schools. I believe that the post bachelor classes are averaged to your undergraduate classes. So apply for a Master program or retake the DAT for higher score. Good luck

Ya I could take my DAT again.....

I think you should apply..your
DAT SCORES are good, just apply EARLY...as long as ur gpa is at least 3.0 you have a chance..good luck

First off I just want to say thanks for giving me some advice on this topic...I really do appreciate it..Ive always been a daily reader of these forums but I rarely post so again thanks.....

I did apply this year its just that I have not heard back except for one rejection so far but it seems from what I am seeing on the forums that alot of people are getting contacted for interviews so Im just trying to figure out my options....

Your DAT scores are amazing! Apply early if you have a 3.0 gpa next cycle and youll get at least a few interviews. Dont take the dental schools not responding to you too seriously, they probably are busy as hell with all of the applicants and reviewing files for 2013.

If youve finished undergrad start up somewhere else at a local university or college to get more upper level scie coursework so that you can increase your GPA by next Spring 2013. If you already have lots of upper level sciences, then just apply for a masters or post bacc program.

Have faith, and never feel discouraged to ask for help. You have come to the right place, SDN is filled with individuals who are going through similar situations. Just continue to work hard and keep motivated!

GOOD LUCK!! 🙂
