I'm from south carolina and was kind of curious because the out of state tutition is realively very low to other out of state tutitions; does this campus of the UC perfer out of state residents??? I also would like some insight as far as their interview process, competition between the students, how challaging is the program, ect.- Thanx

Very few out-of-state applicants get into UCSD.

There were 1297 applicants and of those only 10 were accepted.

Academic fees are $15,570 (both in and out of state pay this)
Tuition is $12,245 for out of state.
You are looking at over $37K

yep - impossible to get in out of state - rock a 45 MCAT and your probably get in.

if you do get in, your looking at a whopper of a tuition bill and
hella expensive rent in La Jolla.

(which may I add, was just listed as surpassing Manhattan for price per square foot, and is now the MOST expensive place to purchase real estate based on square footage)

also the highest gas prices currently in the US - $2.79/gallon regular

other than that, the area and the school (I have only taken genetics here) is p-a-r-a-d-i-s-e.

Yeah, you don't have much of a shot of getting in there from out of state. I'mbetting the 10 people are either MD/PHD's or have ties in San Diego.

Probably phd?s with ties to SD?..It?s hella hard for a San Diego resident to get in there!

La Jolla is paradise.

The medical school? Rrrright, like I'll ever ever know.

I can tell you this, my genetics professor at UCSD sucked eggs.
The worst prof in history.

p.s.
those ten accepted last names were: Copley, Irving, Spanos, Mores, and Seau.

Why the constant need to 1) denigrate UCSD, and 2) point out that you turned down UCSD for UCI? Cheerleading for your school is fine, but you don't need to sling mud at other schools to make yours look prettier.

UCSD is an amazing school. The climate is almost perfect throughout the year. Out of all the UCs...and I have been to ALL of them, UCSD had the most relaxed atmosphere imo. If you need descriptions of any of the UC schools, pm me. Warning though, La Jolla can get pretty expensive...but if you live in PB (Pacific beach) area, rent is manageable. If you do decide to go SD and you go into reproductive, you'll find that Dr. Agarwal is a pretty cool guy.

haha. he should make it his signature.

Did you read the USC v. UCSD thread?? Heck, the guy who was defending UCSD said he doesn't like it there and basically said a lot of the rumors are true.

i believe the poster was being racially insensitive and referring to last names common to URMs

sorry, i dont usually read california threads. how bout them dodgers?

Funny. Even looking at the names, they don't look at all ethnic. But they are the most famous people in San Diego (owner of Chargers, Junior Seau, etc, etc)

ok if you say so. In an attempt to save face...

Junior Seau isnt all that famous. Yes i am a football fan.
If he did have a kid of age to go to med school, he must have had him when he was, oh say, 12 ish.

Ahem. I didn't say it, and it is a fact that those are the most famous people in San Diego.

isn't francis crick still based in SD (as much as anybody who travels as much as he does can be based)?

Easy, at least in SoCal, where wind direction may be easily determined by tracking the windsocks known as kenshinoro and eraserhead (assuming these are actually two different people), whose thoughts regarding UCSD shift as often and abruptly as the breezes on Mission Bay.

Act 1:
"Hark, is that gentle breeze calling to me from the west?" A/k/a "I think I shall pick UCSD over Michigan"
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=122380

Act 2:
"I feeleth the hot, smoggy Santa Ana winds blowing", or "I have been convinced that USC is now the place for me":
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=122404
(with guest appearance by the alter ego eraserhead... seriously, has anyone ever seen these two in the same place at the same time?)

Act 3:
"Uncertainty hangs in the wind" or "I just chose UCI, someone please help me validate this choice!"
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=124810

Act 4:
"A foul wind blows" or "F**k you, UCSD, UCI is the best"
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=129242

Quite a metamorphosis. How does someone go from strongly considering a school (over the #7 school in the country, I might add) one moment, to trashing it the next? Or in the case of eraserhead, going from a huge UCSD proponent to one of its biggest detractors, simply through a wave of the wand from the financial aid fairy. I'll tell you how... they drank so much of the UCI kool-aid that they could no longer speak on the subject with an objective mind.

Maybe it's because they read the following threads:

1. Don't you dare talk about UCSD. I'm a third year and can trash it a ton better than you can.
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=129323

Or the

2. Yes, we do have 36 hours of class a week (but there is a ton of usefull info on this thread
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=68946

Maybe the
3. Go anywhere but UCSD interview tours:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=42357

and one from waaaaay back.

4.

Thank you for all the info...it was much appreciated, especially the break down of the academic fees and "tutition" which should be expained as in conjunction with the academic fees as the out of state cost.....nevertheless thanks again 🙂

I don't know where this USC v. UCSD thread is.... how old is it?

However, here are a list of things I wish I had looked into before entering UCSD SOM (which can be applied to any medical school you're interested in).
1) How supportive is the Office of Student Affairs? How knowledgable are all of the advisors? How accessible is the Dean of Student Affairs? How accessible are the advisors?

2) What kind of tutorial program do they have? Get the details. Do they have tutorial assistance for all classes or just some classes?

3) What is the school's policy on postpoing exams due to family illness, death, or personal loss?

4) Do you learn the best in lecture? or on your own?
I would argue that UCSD is more of a learn on your own or with friends kind of school. The lecturers vary from excellent to embarrassingly poor.
Also ask if professors are accountable for their student "ratings." Don't just ask if they get evaluated.
All schools evaluate their professors and classes.
But ask if the ratings of the professors and classes are posted publicly. This will indicate if the professors are REALLY accountable for their teaching.

5) Also, really consider how much "integration" the first two years of the curriculum has. In other words..... how many professors teach 1 course. Believe me you don't want (if you attend lecture) to be sitting through 20-some odd different professor's lectures with different lecture styles.
Ask current students if there are sections for discussion of clinically relevant cases? or even just sections for review of the material? At UCSD they like to make it sound like there are both lectures and group sections.
The group sections are scarce for most classes.

6) Ask yourself if you would prefer for more student resources on campus and pay more (ie. a private institution) or fewer, dwindling resources on campus (ie. california public institution).
Personally, if I had to pick a med school all over again, I would have gone with the private schools that I got into.... even though they are more expensive, and/or out of state.
Unfortunately, Univeristy of California (I can only talk from the perspective of UCSD), has experienced huge budget cuts. This means that there are fewer monies for supportive services like (student psych services, student health care, student tutorial services, etc).

Consider this carefully.

That's all for now.

With regard to my general impression of UCSD. Well, there are some amazing faculty (clinical and basic science), but the presentation of the curriculum for the first two years is out dated. Most schools are trending towards making all course material (syllabi) on-line with on-line tests and self-assessment exams... to help prepare their students for the USMLE's which are now on-line (or on the computer).
Consider this.

Let's just say that USC's support staff isn't that great at all. I'm not sure you are better off going there to get more "resources" than you would at UCSD.
