I am a Junior in high school trying to discover what to do with the rest of my life and optometry has always been an interest of mine. Does anyone have any opinions for me? Any regrets? Thank you for your time.

I think it's great that you're already thinking about what you want to do, for a lot of people that becomes a life-long process. 🙂

I'd recommend you observe some ODs -- if you're shy about it, just go along with one of your friends or someone in your family to one of their appointments. When I was trying to decide if optometry was the right thing for me, that's what I did (along with posting on here and other message boards), and it gave me a good feel for the profession.

I'd also recommend that you observe an OD or two. I was first exposed to optometry at your point in high school. My next door neighbor was actually an optometrist, and he allowed me to intern with him the summer before my senior year in high school. Basically, by observing an OD, you can determine if optometry might be something you are really interested in. This would be very useful to know going into college, as I feel knowing what you want to do will keep you focused on doing well in school! Good luck with everything!

Thank you both for your helpful information. My neighbor is also an optometrist and I may just call him up and ask him if I may intern with him this summer.

And one more question. What did you major in during your undergraduate? biology, chemistry, or biochemistry?

I personally, majored in biochemistry. But, honestly, as long as you get in your pre-reqs.. you can major in whatever you find interesting.

Majoring in Biochemistry was the worse mistake I ever made! LOL!!

I majored in Geography and Cartography many, many moons ago. 😉 (Then I went back to school to take my pre-reqs.) Like cpw said, it really doesn't matter what your major is. Many people tend to be bio or chem majors, followed by psych.

Major in whatever interests you... it'll make getting through undergrad easier. Don't forget to have a back up plan. Just in Case.

A back up plan would be good, but I have always been taught to try my hardest and never settle for anything less.

I am afraid that a good med. school won't except me if I choose to major in something other than biology, chemistry, or biochemistry. Is that true?

A major in biology, chem, etc. will probably make it easier for you to find some research opportunities related to the field, and research would look good on your curriculum vitae/resume.
