Could I use how sports instilled character in me and provided me qualities such as being resilient and persistent and how that relates to my grades (bad grades freshman year but I kept fighting on 3.0 -> 3.5)

Oh Gee, I don't know, maybe it could be on "how sports instilled character in me," & "I kept fighting to overcome bad grades."

I mean cmon, be a little creative. I'm a firm believer in appealing to the reader and not focusing so much on the topic at hand. I mean it's obviously important to stay on topic when writing anything (especially an essay) but the way you express a certain experience, implement key ideas, and paint a clear vivid image in the readers head is of much more importance, regardless of who is reading it. I.e.: ADCOMS, professors, friends.

@Jordan95 you don't think talking about how your undergraduate career is related to let's say a tennis match? losing the first set was like my freshman year, wasn't prepared. after the first set, i found out my weaknesses and built upon them. etc.

I don't know if I'd compare my lack of hard work and dedication in undergrad to a game of tennis, but it's an optional essay and it probably doesn't matter. I would be more inclined to prepare for the interview when a question of the like arises.

You can write about almost anything, what's more important is HOW you write it. I read a story of a girl who was accepted into 5 ivy league's - her personal statement was about her childhood trips to Costco.

I saw it while checking my email on Yahoo News but I'm sure it's all over the place. It definitely was an interesting read!
