Night 1 Results
After the ceremonial run to Campbell Airstrip, you all load up your dogs and meet near Willow Lake for the official restart. The trail out of Willow winds through the birch and spruce trees of the forest and covers generally flat terrain, with only a few hills around the Susitna River. You are finally on your way to the first checkpoint - Yentna Station Checkpoint!
A fair bit of activity took place during the night, with most of it centered around racers preparing themselves for the long haul or defending themselves from perceived nighttime dangers.
That said, there were some odd happenings:
A powerful stench wafts its way from Nyanko's camp. Nobody is brave enough to figure out what the heck it is, but it doesn't seem to have caused anybody any harm. Someone remarks that it sure smells like wolverine urine.
A few players came out of the night a few dogs short, complaining of unwitnessed attacks.
One player stayed up quite a bit of the night knitting custom booties for that team's lead dog, Petunia.
Word traveled quickly of a moose attack on a player: while coming around a sharp bend, this team plowed headlong into a particularly old, grumpy moose grinding its teeth on a pine twig. The moose, already pissed off at life in general, gave a roar and charged the team, overturning the sled, reducing one of the runners to pieces, and throwing the driver headlong into a tree. Feeling a great deal of satisfaction with the encounter, the moose ambled off down the trail, leaving the rider to pick up the pieces and get back on the trail.
Foxhunter got an early jump in the race, moving from Cohort 4 to Cohort 2. That may have felt like a great change, except for the avalanche that came out of a mountain that nobody knew existed on this part of the trail, lightly burying Cohorts 2 and 5. No severe injuries were reported.
The last item of interest was an attack on Jjohnston's nighttime camp. Having set a fire to protect herself, the attack was somewhat mitigated. The attackers were clearly set on taking Jj out of the race. They were unsuccessful in their goal, but did cause enough damage that Jj has had to drop 5 team dogs and a wheeler from her line. Ouch. Word travels up and down the race of the attack, with the general consensus being that the mushers will exercise a little wilderness justice on the person they decide is responsible.
Oh. One last thing. One racer was seen falling off a port-a-loo at a checkpoint and appears to have hit her head rather hard:
