Iditarod WW-SDN Game Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Musher Spokesperson voting:

SOV (48) - Orcagirl, SOV, JJ
Abney (96) - PP, EC, Kaydubs, nyanko, wldlf, cuitl

Deadline: 7pm central 12/27

My advice is to be planning ahead for your nighttime PMs.

1st year we had one lecture on performance dog nutrition from a penn vet guy involved in sled dogs... I vaguely remember it being interesting, but can't remember any take away messages (except they need really concentrated hi fat hi calorie food which is kind of a no-brainer).

I have the audio of the lecture if anyone is really interested!

I am, actually.

Sorry I read "nutrition" and my eyes glazed over and I had to take a quick nap.

Elect Abney
I am coming down with a monster cold and it is so not doing wonders for my brain running at full capacity, so sorry to everyone in advance for that.

Attention - Moderator Instructions:

As soon as you can, please PM us with your day job. You may not choose to be a veterinarian unless you already are one.

You can interpret this as your real day job, the dream job you'd like to have if you weren't planning on vet medicine, the job you think a musher might want to have, whatever.

Interesting weighting system.

On for a bit... elect Abney, who is fantastic! I'm heading out shopping for the afternoon and don't know when I'll be back, so.

Very excited to see what creative things you all come up with..

Probably won't be able to help mod much until saturday, wi-fi here is insanely expensive, but I will keep checking in from my phone... 🙂

whoops looks like from the rule post that LIS didn't see that tropictuco dropped out and I just casually swooped in and took that spot. If you need/want someone to play I'm available.

Have to figure out how to get it to you. Dropbox is probably the easiest way i suppose. Let's discuss on FB.

elect SOV

for taking the risk of letting me co-mod with him 😛

Day 1 Voting Results

In what amounts to a landslide, mushers across the slate showed their concern that an old entrant with a team of foreleg-only-walking-IGs may not have the stamina to make it to the end, and instead picked Abney as their spokesperson.

The final vote:

SOV (48) - Orcagirl, SOV, JJ, Trem, Swings (too late to count)
Abney (240) - PP, EC, Kaydubs, nyanko, wldlf, cuitl, FFM, abney, wildcat, nohika, vetgirl, bold text, WS, Dyachei, Hedgie

You may now send in your nighttime item PMs. Night will close when we have the number we're looking for and any nighttime role PMs also have been sent in, or at 10pm central tonight - whichever comes first.

Rule clarification: We will not accept nighttime item submissions until the day's voting is closed and the results are posted. A few people have jumped the gun, leading me to think that I was not clear in the rules. My apologies.

Hedgie, I've got you in. If the rule post has tropictuco it's because I cut 'n paste a list from my spreadsheet that I forgot to update with your name.

Ok good. I just didn't want to be voting and sending you guys stuff unless I was actually playing.

I honestly have not had a single problem sending PMs at all since you guys started complaining about this.

I have noticed that it hangs on the posting screen a lot but if I just close it after I click submit then go back to the thread I was posting in, it's always already posted it so no idea.

The app it just horrible. I cannot "reply all" (it asks for a subject and recipient but has no subject line). Since I updated the app, my inbox doesn't tell me of new messages unless I refresh. When I send a PM, the window doesn't close. When I hit send a second time, it tells me I am trying to send multiple PMs and then closes.

Plus, I get sent to random areas of threads I click on.

During the last WW game, I was getting PMs a lot later when the glitches were happening. I guess I need to use my laptop more.

Night is closed. Write-up to follow. Thank you to the players that submitted items for tonight's use. Everyone can try again tomorrow. 🙂

Some clarifications about items:

1) Everybody may submit one every night, unless you've been told otherwise via PM. We are only taking a certain number based off the number of players currently in the game.

2) When the same 'effect' is repeatedly submitted, we will only take the first one or two. Probably. For example, a number of people opted to try and protect themselves; only a couple of those made it past the filter.

3) We will not be acknowledging your submission until needed (either in the write-up or via results PM). If you do not ever hear from us, assume your item didn't make the cut.

4) Items may only be submitted once the turn in which you'd like to use them has started. This is to give everyone the same chance.

So is it the first one of a particular type of item you receive chronologically or are you judging them based on creativity?

Yes. There is some weighting given to both elements.

I am sending out results via PM now. The write-up is done but won't get posted until PMs are out.

Night 1 Results

After the ceremonial run to Campbell Airstrip, you all load up your dogs and meet near Willow Lake for the official restart. The trail out of Willow winds through the birch and spruce trees of the forest and covers generally flat terrain, with only a few hills around the Susitna River. You are finally on your way to the first checkpoint - Yentna Station Checkpoint!

A fair bit of activity took place during the night, with most of it centered around racers preparing themselves for the long haul or defending themselves from perceived nighttime dangers.

That said, there were some odd happenings:

A powerful stench wafts its way from Nyanko's camp. Nobody is brave enough to figure out what the heck it is, but it doesn't seem to have caused anybody any harm. Someone remarks that it sure smells like wolverine urine.

A few players came out of the night a few dogs short, complaining of unwitnessed attacks.

One player stayed up quite a bit of the night knitting custom booties for that team's lead dog, Petunia.

Word traveled quickly of a moose attack on a player: while coming around a sharp bend, this team plowed headlong into a particularly old, grumpy moose grinding its teeth on a pine twig. The moose, already pissed off at life in general, gave a roar and charged the team, overturning the sled, reducing one of the runners to pieces, and throwing the driver headlong into a tree. Feeling a great deal of satisfaction with the encounter, the moose ambled off down the trail, leaving the rider to pick up the pieces and get back on the trail.

Foxhunter got an early jump in the race, moving from Cohort 4 to Cohort 2. That may have felt like a great change, except for the avalanche that came out of a mountain that nobody knew existed on this part of the trail, lightly burying Cohorts 2 and 5. No severe injuries were reported.

The last item of interest was an attack on Jjohnston's nighttime camp. Having set a fire to protect herself, the attack was somewhat mitigated. The attackers were clearly set on taking Jj out of the race. They were unsuccessful in their goal, but did cause enough damage that Jj has had to drop 5 team dogs and a wheeler from her line. Ouch. Word travels up and down the race of the attack, with the general consensus being that the mushers will exercise a little wilderness justice on the person they decide is responsible.

Oh. One last thing. One racer was seen falling off a port-a-loo at a checkpoint and appears to have hit her head rather hard:

There are still 24 remaining mushers in the race:

someone attacked my dogs and 2 are injured 🙁

how could you pre-vet forum?? hurting innocent dogs! 😡

3 pages to catch up on. Whoo...

So do people die from an attack or do they drop out of the race when they don't have a dog anymore or drop below a certain number of dogs maybe?

Good thinking on protecting yourself, JJ!

PP, I'm wondering that too. (the wiki pages thing)

Ooh LIS. This looks fun. Not thrilled about the avalanche though

WTF??! Apparently I've pissed someone off. I'm racking my brain trying to think who could have it out for me. I'm generally not attacked so early on. And what would've happened if I hadn't of protected myself? I'm just glad my item went through. But I've lost 6 dogs 🙁

And PP, I think you're on to something in that people aren't killed, just get knocked out when they don't have anymore dogs. Especially since I was attacked by fellow mushers, not by wolves or anything else. 😱

Maybe dropping out of the race is just the same thing as dying in other games? And it's barely ever real wolves so it makes sense that the others are mushers too. Just not good ones.

Yeah that's true. I guess I was just thinking that in most WW games the wolves have a different role than the villagers. Which doesn't seem to be the case in this game.
