If a 12-year old can do it so can we!

Hah. I totally remember reading about this a couple of years back. This kid is truly amazing. I wonder how he's doing now?

i just read through the article and laughed in delight at this young boy's accomplishments. I just hope he doesn't grow up too fast and that he's still able to enjoy childhood experiences.

not trying to detract, but remember, there's a fine line betweeen/seperating genius and madness. iq over 200? anyone seen 'A Beautiful Mind'?

LOL he may be extremly intelligent, but seriously... a potential situation.

As the kid " HI, im a 4th year student, And I will be giving you a pelvic exam." LOL at 15!!!! riiiiight

That won't be happening, because he's doing an MD/PhD. So he'll be like 19 by the time he hits third year. 🙂

This is really an amazing kid.

However I wonder what ever happened to "The school of medicine seeks well-rounded candidates with life experiences". The kid is probably a genius keeping him back a few years to grow up probably wouldnt have hurt him either.
Even Einstein (the granddaddy of geniuses) was a mature man before his revolutionary theory.

Just a thought

I saw the 60 minutes or 20/20 show about him. He still has friends his age whenever he visits his parents and gets along well. Doesn't seem like a guy that would just hide in his room reading med books not wanting to talk to anyone.

Has he taken the MCAT or gone through the AMCAS process?

Must have. U of Chicago is an AMCAS school. I am sure he crushed the mcat they would not have let him in at his age otherwise.

I wonder if there are any SDNers that know Sho personally... hmmm. It would be interesting to know his mcat score.🙂

I went to school with this kid at Loyola. I always heard "Sho this and Sho that" but I never met him. When I was there, I was told that his sister could do calculus at the age of 3. It's amazing!

I am sure it's true, but how the hell do your teach a 3 year calculus??? Most kids that age can barely talk!

He may be brilliant but I still be wary of a 17 year old cutting me open or whatever

37. he visits these forums often. during the interview cycle a few years back, several SDN'ers have actually met him and had seen him on the interview track. he's been discussed quite a few times actually. i feel bad though that i'm giving out his info considering that it's not really any of my business....but oh well, i'm like that🙂

This kid is so awesome. I do have a particular fondness for prepubescent boys that some might find unsavory, but Im sure that with his intellect he knows that he wants it too.

"He got a 37.......14 Bio, 13 Phy, 10 Verbal..." WOW!... thats scary. He's not human!!! Maybe Chuck Norris is his dad 🙂

Please, just spend a minute looking over your statement again. It could've been worded better.

People being weirded out by Michael Jackson having kids sleep in his bed have perverse minds, too, right?

If their minds were pure then they would have likely never realized what michael jackson had done. A pure mind is an innocent mind and does not know of such debauchery and defilement. A conviction or even an accusation against michael jackson would be concurrent with a concession that they themselves are perverse.

It just seems a little out of the ordinary for these kids to learn this material on their own accord at such an early age (3). I can't help but wonder if it is a sign their overly zealous parents are slave driving their kids to learn this material while their peers are obsessing over the next cool toy or game console. However, I'm willing to lay my judgment aside and give these kids the benefit of the doubt; perhaps they really are just interested in calculus at 3.

uhhh very unsavory. Try to word this better. This shouldnt be allowed. I hope Sho Yano doesnt log in and see this

youre an idiot dude, ever heard of sarcasm.

Sarcasm? Im unsure why sarcasm would be used in that context joking or not period...but I guess im the idiot. In the mean time, you keep on "keepin' it gay" up there in chicago...whatever you mean by that

It doesn't matter if it was a joke. I don't see how anyone could find that funny.

Oh hey, let's start throwing around rape jokes, right? 🙄 Just leave...

alright, and we'll start throwing around rolleyed smilies after our sentences to look like we made some obvious points with our posts.

nobody is making a joke at the expense of anyone else. he is simply mocking the mindset of perverse people themselves. why would you be against that, unless you too, are perverted?

Wait, so when he was 10 he was shadowing doctors and volunteering at the ER?

Just because he has a 37 MCAT doesn't mean that he has lots of life experience (how could he, he did nothing but fly through primary and secondary school?). I doubt he has the emotional maturity needed to be a doctor. Yes, he had to have interviews, but I bet the parents coached him for it.

I think that he should have been promised a spot for when he turned 18. 18 doesn't guarntee maturity, but that's six years to learn some things about life.

A kid with a 200+ IQ only got a 10 on Verbal....I'm screwed.
-Dr. P.

P.S.: I give this kid a lot of credit. Most people his age would crack under pressure of his tremendous intellect, and sure, he lacks life experience, but he seems like a cool kid and he's obviously smart enough to go into med school, so best of luck to him.

Edited to add: "only got a 10" is an understatement on my part

Good for this kid. It's important to nurture intelligence of this kind, even better at a young age. For those saying he doesn't have life experiences, I don't think its that big a deal. Sure there are qualities that will help you become better doctors, and if you have those experiences before entering medicine, great! However, I think in medical school you learn a lot, gain quite a bit of experience, and gain attitudes needed for the practice of medicine. I don't see why it would be any different for him, he's been around older people for a majority of his life, so why should medical school be any different. As far as I am concerned, he could be the next great scientist and I am not saying we should pressure him to seek after a self-fulfilling prophecy, however, it is important that intellect like this is not impeded.

I just have to say that is absolutely amazing and if I could, I would switch places with him. To have that kind of intelligence and passion to learn is very impressive.

I have met Sho personally and he is VERY mature. If he had a deeper voice and you closed your eyes, you wouldn't know he was that young.

Very intelligent with insight that amazes me. His parents are also very kind and seem to let him do whatever makes him happy.

He is happy, so I think everything is okay.

The link says...

I go to Loyola and actually had a microbiology course w/this 12 year old prodigy and I remember when he got his scores back in June, bc: I remember asking him what he got. He got a 37.......14 Bio, 13 Phy, 10 Verbal..........................................By the way, for all you M1's at Pritzker, it is a really weird feeling to get a lower grade on something than a 12 year old.................Have fun..........

he kinda has to go the MD/Phd route. There isn't a state that will license him until he is at leat 21.

I don't know how true that law is because the youngest med school graduate was actually a Telugu South Indian boy who became an Opthamologist. The guy went to HMS for either med school or residency and was 13 when he got in med school but 17 when he graduated med school.

This guy you are talking about is going down the MD/PhD program so they say he'll be about 19 or 20 when he graduates med school.

Read the paragraphs carefully and the questions they are asking you. I'm a rather slow reader and I certainly make lots of mistakes but it is possible to be of average intelligence and get higher than a 10 in VR.
