nothing in life is worth quitting life or taking one away...

...and I DON'T eventually get into any schools, should I pretty much quit life? Seriously, I feel like I just keep doing average at my interviews so far...so I'm getting nervous. 😕 Is this normal for people?

Right now you have no reason to believe that you won't get in so don't worry! I'm sure you did better than you feel like you did🙂

Related question (I also have 5 interviews-2 down, 3 to go)-With 5 interviews, are the chances of AT LEAST one acceptance pretty good? I wish I knew more about the odds of acceptance after having interviewed somewhere...

I'm not really sure the chances...I'm just hoping for ONE acceptance!!! If I don't get into at least one, then I'm gonna go crazy. :meanie:

this question reminded me of a possible DAT Math question:

When two events, A and B, are independent, the probability of both occurring is: P (A and B)= P(A) x P(B)
Multiplication rule.

Hmm...it seems like probability is against us 🙁
The chances of getting accepted to two schools (after an interview, assuming 25% of those interviewed at a school get accepted) is:
.25 x .25= 6.25%

I guess we are all gamblers??

but other variables are involved...different schools weigh things differently...chances are greater than 6%. Check PreDents. Lots of people who interviewed in at least 5 schools were accepted to more than one school.

can't use the independent rule in this situation.

and most likely...CORRELATION does not equal CAUSATION - meaning statistics isn't 100% efficient.

^^ Lol I was oversimplifying for shock value. Obviously I am aware the many people get accepted to many schools.

Good critique of stats though! Thats a good skill when reading thru sci journals. I see an acceptance in the future! Good luck to you and everyone 🙂

The chance of getting into dental school is actually higher than you think. When I went to my UCONN interview they had the stats on the total applicants last year, and how many were enrolled. It was between 40-50%, I don't have the numbers with me right now, but I will post them later. I believe the problem is people tend to apply to the wrong schools.

🙂 - I definitely see where you're coming from. My reply to you was for the sake of giving the OP a bump in confidence! It's tough enough...

I agree. Knowing statistics will help you become a better critic/evaluator (to question sources). However, statistics can be twisted and tweaked to sound pleasant (or unpleasant) to the one reading/listening to a presentation - and for that reason, one should always question the uncertainty attached to a statistic. With dental school, it's complex and difficult to calculate your chances in circumstances such as these - the best numbers you can find are in the ADEA guide (if you want to know what your chances are before/after the interview).

--A little off-topic (but I want to prove my point that statistics don't apply in every situation and should lightly weighed in decisions)---

and it's true that when you read scientific journals, you can't just believe that "Peptobismol has been linked to increased risk of stomach cancer" - you have to read the rest of the report and look for the protocol involved to scientifically determine if it was a carefully controlled research project (to find this so-called link). Also, those research reports on any amount of sugar intake (even normal amounts) causing health problems are propaganda aka health scares - journalists leave out the fact that carbohydrates are an important part of your diet (should be above 50%) and are not exactly agents of health problems unless you consume more than the suggested dietary amount. It's all done on purpose by the journalist of course - they take scientific research statistics, change a few words, and relate it to a problem = front cover of NY Times.

Bottomline - not everything is an ideal situation. statistics need to be interpreted lightly when you're trying to predict your chances after the interview.

Appreciate the comment. I hope you are successful this cycle as well! We've all worked too hard...hopefully everyone that put in the work this time around will get in this year.

Hahahhaha Thinking about asking a grl out seems more petrifying than thinkin about being infront of 3 interviewer. I've been rejected so many times but its still nerve racking. sigh*. hahhahaha i failed last yr but this yr i will not fail! good video.

Remember! You need just one acceptance: 25% + 25% = 50% chance not bad at all 🙂

Last cycle the magic number seemed to be 3 pre-december interviews= at least 1 acceptance. On SDN, that is.

lol, if you seriously went to 5 interviews, and all of them rejected you, then one of the following options musta been true at all of the interviews:

1) you went into your interviews with your underwear and nothing else
2) you made it clear that you hated their school / or the entire profession of dentistry as a whole
3) you punched one of "them"
4) They asked you "why Dentistry".....you were confused at first, then you ran out the room.... and never returned
5) You decided to do #2 without going to the bathroom
6) When asked "what do you see yourself doing in 10 years".... your answer was "Dexter"

Yeh, thats pertty much it....

dental works i think youre on to something

one great plan is, first get accepted somewhere in december
then post december go to an interview just to se what you could get away with

a few ideas cross my mind:
- release a badger in the admissions office, that or a bunch red ants
- come dressed as a 70's pimp
- ingest a bottle of of ipecac before your interview

xbocker's case interview will sound like robert frost poem after those events
just my two cents

There is a really good spread sheet about this!! I am not sure who posted this first, but I am not taking any credit for it..

hahaha, maybe we should skip the dating and just propose eh? 😛

Awesome, thank you for posting this here!

No problem! I was really happy when I found it as well!! It gives you a great perspective on things and boosts your confidence. Most of the time, if you get an interview, you've made a BIG cut of people. Just that should help with interview confidence and give you a little more hope!

I would say its like vegas, it doesn't really matter how many reds come up, the next spin/interview is not dependent on the previous. However this is different in that your confidence and nerves will probably improve with each interview, at least i feel mine did. If you just want to hear that 'yes' ill give it to ya, five interviews is pretty solid so I wouldn't worry too much buddy!

your math doesnt apply to this case. he just wants to kno his chances of getting into a school

if you have two interviews, your chance of getting into one school is essentially: 1 - the chances of not getting in.

so...

chances of getting in with two interviews at 25% acceptance at each school:

1 - (.75 * .75) = 43.75%!!!

ill actually do the math for the OP. your chances of getting in SOMEWHERE (1 OUT OF THE 5) by pure probability, if the 5 interviews takes 25% of the interviewees, is 76.3%

on a purely odds basis thats pretty good so chill out. your odds is still infinitely better than many of those out there who are still waiting for one interview 😀 dont freak yourself out

5 interviews is amazing, especially before december..
don't stress yourself out just have confidence. there are thousands of applicants and the fact that you got picked for so many interviews is a great sign. its up to you to show your true passion for dentistry when you are at the school. I have a friend who is d1 class right now at Maryland ( my number one pick !!)who applied to 12 schools.. got only 1 interview (maryland) and therefore one acceptance (MARYLAND) so in conclusion you can never be sure how things will pan out..only time will tell so in the mean time just breathe 😀

lots of bad statistics here, though the chap who gave you a 76% shot has it right.

i think you have an excellent, excellent shot. however, dont count your chickens yet. Ive heard of a very small amount of peeps not getting in with multiple interviews.

however, from trolling predents, after taking a look at say 40 waitlisted applicants, it seems to me most peeps get accepted at 50% or more of their interviews. so in my unexpert opinion, you are looking at 1-2 acceptances.

envision how you will feel when youa re accepted. close your eyes, breathe deep. let the universe align with your vision. you cannot fail.

Actually, this is a good example of a case where events are not independent. If you have one good interview (due to great personality, conversational skills, etc.), chance are you will also do well on your other interviews for the same reasons. Same goes for a bad interview if you're socially awkward, etc.
