Hi,

Can you plz tell me that if i have a score of 91% in part 1 and i have got an ece evaluation done and it says that my gpa of 2.7.so what are my chances of getting addmission

E=international]Hi,
I think u r equally placed among the applicants as u have a pretty good stats. So u dont worry and i think u will get in to some school this year. One thing i would like to tell u and all, it is not the only part one score which gets u admission, it is always a package deal. So if u want in Calisfornia, do good in practicals, where u can override some people with good scores with poor skills.

All the best

Hi,
I would suggest you to go to their web site and collect info. I really dont have any news about it, but one thing i know is that, it is good school and one of the reputed in USA. It has Pass/ No pass system like some schools in USA.

Hi,
I can understand ur situation. The score u have is good, but not a great score. I am being frank. I know people with 86+/-2 got in to USC last year and based on that i can say that u have fair chances cos, u said that u did ur practical exams and group discussion well. But, u never know the competition and other competitors. Keep ur fingers crossed and I wish you all the best. U know everyyear competition increases. People think that once they called for interview, everyone is same, but IT IS NOT.
I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST
Thanks International....!!All the best to you too... 👍

hi , U conn requires you to be a permanent resident or a citizen . preferably a resident od connecticut . second prefernce given to new england states and then all the other states are considered.
they dont have an international students programme . if they have vacancy in the second year they may open for admissions .
min NBDE score req is 90 .they wont look at anything below that .
deadline is 1st feb.. according to their website.

hope that answers all ure queries . info is available on their website

Hi Everyone,
I am a new member of the forum.I have a question. My stats are not all that impressive: Part 1-87, TOEFL-263, GPA-3.28(BDS), M.S. GPA-4.0.I am doing my masters in oral Biology.I have a publication, 2 poster presentations, 6 years of clinical experience both as a general dentist and as an endodontist,i am involved in 3 research projects involving intra-oral digital radiographic systems and I have little bit of teaching experience too(I taught Freshman dental students in Uni. of Louisville,School of Dentistry)
I am a bit worried about my not so good board scores. With other credits mentioned above, do I hold a chance in getting an admission in any of the schools or do you suggest me to repeat part 1 again??
Regards,
Ramya

Hi Ramya,
I think u have a good chances to get in to dental school with ur credentials. I think u have excellent record too, but i would still suggest to retake ur part one if u have time and part two if possible. I know and i think everyone knew that competition is increasing every year. But if u dont have time, i think u can apply and still get in to the program.

Thanks you very much International.I have already applied to some of the schools.I will see the feedback. My main constraint is time....It would be really difficult for me to repeat part 1 and take up part 2 also when my master's program course work takes away all my time.As you said, will repeat Part 1if no school accepts me with these scores. No other go...right?

Thanks and regards,
Ramya

Yes u r right..It's just not the part 1 scores that schools look for but then it's definitly an advantage to have high part 1 scores...Try applying to all possible schools this yr & unfortunately if u get rejection then u can take your part 1 exam like international said.. :luck:

Hi,
I dont think it is TOO late for applying, cos u have an excellent credentials and scores. U can expect a call from them anytime, and i THINK that Upenn announces half of the seats by december and rest half after dec and it is some what similar in BU too. So, be positive and expect for the interviews. See are there any schools still have their deadlines. I think NYU has it but it is a 3 year program.
All the best

Hi friend, I don't know I should be happy or worried. I just got an interview letter from Upenn, but I know that they are famous for inviting most of applicants to have the interview. Could anybody help me how to prepare that? Thanks!!!

Hi,
Congrats on ur success and Coming to the choice between UCLA and USC, i think both have -ves and + ves. So u have to think what u need and what u dont want.

UCLA:

+VES:

Very famous school.
Pass/ No pass system.
Beautiful campus
Less work compared to the some of the schools and probably less exams, Less competition, so should be a good envirionment.(This one, i am guesssing as generally Pass/ No pass system will be like that).
Good record of people going to specialization.

-VES:

poor patient pool.

USC:
+ VES:
Good Pre clinicals.
Nice patient pool.
Nice school

-ves:

Problems with Problem based learning.
(I heard they r with drawing that system, but i am not sure).
Too much load in the pre clinical lab.
( i sincerely dont think one needs so much after being a dentist).

These are my points and decision should not be based only these factors as i didnt mention about the price tag of the programs and so many...

All the best and take care

Hi,
Dental school diploma is the degree what u get it from ur school or ur univeristy and not the state licensure.
I thik i answered ur question.

Hi International the Great,

Does the number of attempts to get a satisfactory NBDE part-1 score affect our chance of getting selected into dental school? Does a person with single attempt NBDE-1 have better chance for admission than a person with 2-3 attempts?(Remaining factors ie. GRE, TOEFL, dexterity, etc being constant)

I am planning to give a try this December as the application deadlines to some colleges are closing in the end of Jan 2005. Otherways I would actually like to give Part-1 in April. If I give an attempt this month and dont get a satisfactory score and give a second attempt later on and get a good score, will the number of Part-1 attempts be considered and cause me to have a poorer chance to secure a seat than otherways with a single attempt?

waiting to hear from you,
Good Luck
Bye

Thank you so much for reaching out to help. I have a question too. I have been selected by UCSF and USC. I wonder which school should I choose. Of course UCSF is a better school. but their IDP program is pretty new. I don't like the PBL of USC. UCSF is gonna be 30,000$ more expensive than USC. So my question is if UCSF worth that 30,000 difference?
thanks for the help!

I am trying to get into one of the schools in CA, What is the ideal (minimum)part 1 score I need and also do I have to take the duggans (gateway course) course for preparing for the practical exams or is it quite easy, cause I have not been in dental field for the past 5 years. I heard that USC is better than UCSF due to more pt pool, please help me,

Hi,
Congrats on ur admission in to USC and UCSF. I think both are good schools and both have a good patient load. But UCSF has a better name than USC and i dont know how worth is the name is. But my personal opinion, atleast it carries extrta 1 point more than the other schools if u want to specialize. If you dont want to specialize, then it is a different ball game. I think USC also has a lot students going for specialty. But whether the extra $30,000 is worth in UCSF, i dont think anyone can answer. But it is a lot of money in my sense. Coming to the PBL, i came to know thru one USC student that, they r not changing the curriculum and people are liking that. The other +ve points in UCSF, is it has Pass/ No pass system where u dont have many exams and u can realx a lot when compared to the graded systems. Preclinicals in USC is hectic than in UCSF as far as i know.
All the best

I dont have muck knowldge on that, but what i know is, that they conduct a different kind of exam than the rest of the schools. I think u need to set teeth and do class II and some crown preps i suppose. I think some one who went last year can confirm this. I am sure about the teeth setup.

Hi,
I think u need atleast 90 in part one to get in to any of the schools for the next year. The more score u have, the better chances u have. I dont even wonder if the cut of score is 90 or more. So try to get more than 90 at min. Coming to the duggans courses, i happened to see recently a lot of people taking it and becoming confident. I really dont know what he teaches and how worth they are. I think some one who took the course can shed some light on that.

Hi ssaug,
Do you have the list of universities in the East coast/midwest? or where can I get one from?
When is the last date for admission into 2005 programs?
Do I have to have the scores in hand by this date or they would just take the application and I can send the NBDE 1 scores while the application is in progress?

hi international,
can u please tell me like how many correct answers should i mark out of 100 to get a score above 90 ( roughly ) .......coz like atleast to able to judge how i performed in the test.......iam little scared at this time coz i get around 18 questions wrong 😱 out of 100 does that mean iam scoring only 82 :scared: ....... heard there is a conversion scale to save us......!!!!!!!!

thanx a lot

Hi Ssaug,
If u loose 18, u wont get 82 and u might get more than 90 also. What ever i am gonna say mught be right or might be wrong. Confirm from some one who has more knowledge in this aspect. The score is based on so many factors and i think they delete some questions and the score is a percentile and not a percentage. So i think they will take consideration of how the other students did the exam in that period and then they will compare with their statistical table. Based on that u will get ur score. And i think if u get anything more than 80 questions for 100, it should get u a good score.
All the best
