How much harder is it to get into an IM/ER residency compared to a straight IM residency?

I would say that the EM forum is a better place than the IM forum to ask (and, just as a sidelight, if you say "IM/ER", you will be marked as either a 'noob' or out of touch or unaware of what EM is), as there are 5X as many IM programs as EM, and, as such, there are a lot more IM than EM residents, especially at places that don't have EM residencies, so the IM perspective, right or wrong, is often biased against EM, and the narrow perspective is not representative of the big picture.

In other words, IM residents will 1. tell you that EM sucks (because, at the hospitals most IM residents are at, the ED does not have EM-residency trained docs, and is not an academic, but a community ED) and 2. look with derision on combined EM/IM programs, even as they a. don't REALLY know the specifics and b. are not aware that EM/IM candidates virtually always have better numbers/application packages than the majority of straight IM or EM applicants.

With so many IM programs, there are better options for the strong applicant, but, also, an equivalent (following the bell curve) number of "not so good" places/programs for the "not so strong" applicant.
