  1. Podiatry Student
Hello
I normally find myself in the pre-allo forums since I am applying to MD schools, but my father (an oncologist) recently had a heart to heart with me and told me that becoming an MD is not worth the trouble or money and that I should, instead, take a look at Podiatry. I would be able to perform the surgeries I so desire (foot and ankle obvi), but without the unnecessary stresses that follow MDs. So, being a newbie of sorts, I was wondering how my stats stack up for Podiatry schools. I am kind of borderline for pre-allo so I dont know where that places me here. I am in the process of filling out applications so I ask...

with my 3.5 gpa, 28 mcat from a top 10 University what schools are within that range...

Also
Is applying now (1/5/08) too late?

One more thing,
What is the general ranking of the pod schools (from most prestigious to least)

Thanks in advance!

oh thank you.

What about the general admissions process. Is it similar to allo where applying earlier is better? If i were to apply right now, is that fine? This all is foreign to me. Thank you!

one more thing. I have no shadowed any podiatrists during college, but I did shadow many ER physicians and orthopods. Would these suffice or do they generally look for pod shadowing? Thanks in advance.

You should shadow at least one podiatrist, as this will show that you are truly interested in the field and have an idea of what you're getting yourself into.

are you sure you want to do podiatry?
make sure you really want to do it before you start applying and what not.

I would shadow one before deciding.

unless i am mistaken, most schools want one of your lor's to be from a pod. definitely shadow one not because you would be clueless without the experience, but more to see the daily grind of what podiatry is. its not all sx my friend! make sure you are cool with chip and clip, etc. your stats are fine. pm me if you need any help.

Well, shadowing is always good and definitely recommended. Narkotiks is right that it's NOT all foot & ankle surgery (although nail debridement is coded as a surgical procedure for some reason), as it varies with every practice and even State.

I didn't shadow one before I went to SCPM (i was just working at P&G), though having interviewed there, i wish I did because it would have helped during the interview of why I would be going into Podiatric Medicine/Surgery.

I had relatively the same scores as you except I went to a local state school due to financial reasons and not a top tier university.

It's been debated, exhaustively, which school is the best, but the main point is that wherever you go, work your ass off and don't quit cause it only gets harder even after school.

NyMets85 I think you are doing the right thing by looking at the field of podiatry. I have two surgeons in my family that both said they would not do it all over again given there cirucmstance. Both of which were making over 1/2 million a year. They both told me that the title of an MD is what alot of young people aspire towards becasue of the prestige of it all. Once obtained however it is not as blissful as they thought.

Not that cutting nails and treating foot fungus is not a prestigious job.

In my opinion Podiatry is a perfect mix if you will. I will.

I am curious what your father thinks is so stressful about being an MD that podiatry is exempt from.

From what I understand there are some of the same stressed with billing and reimbursements and decreases in pay each year by medicare/medicaid. Plus others I am sure. And then podiatry has its own problems, issues and stresses. Make sure this is what you want before you commit.
