IM program invites

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thats true haha ill add more safeties but the thing is I actually applied to a good amount of safeties and havent heard squat from them I even sent LOIs to these places despite being insanely overqualified for many of them. They still dont want anything to do with me haha. I havent applied to a single community program except Pennsy and Mayo Jax and dont really want to waste money on more community programs. Ill have to go outside my geographic regions and apply to places in the midwest i guess since I hit every single academic program basically on the entire east coast and every state west until you hit MO and the midwest states. I just really really really dont want to go to a community program but I guess thats better than not matching
I applied to a lot of low tier academic places that I thought I would get ivs from too.. this process seems so random sometimes..im debating if i should send more LOI or just wait it out.. i think i should be safe in terms of matching but hoping i dont fall to the bottom of my rank list and end up at a community program

Same boat! Ghosted by like 95% of my low tier academics. I guess we still have some time im just so paranoid and impatient lol waiting on that trickle

Haha dude ill tell you one thing and its def not that there is something wrong with your app you got an invite at Georgetown. Im not sure what these low tiers are thinking though

Yup exactly! I just say who I am and that I am very interested in their program and ask if they have sent invites out yet? Obvi i know they have but its the way I say it. It worked lol
thanks for the info.. there is a low tier program that i emailed but never heard back debating if i should call too…

How'd signaling go for everyone? I'm 3/5 on signaling, surprised I didn't get at least 1 of the remaining 2.

4/5...Emory is the last one I never got an invite from still waiting and not sure whether I should send an LOI or not. If I haven't gotten an invite from them by now I doubt Ill ever get one they are Top 15ish. Almost embarrassed to call them lmao feel like theyll laugh since its November

2/5. Probably 2 programs I would've received interview invites at regardless though. Very surprised about 1 in particular I haven't heard back from. Even sent them a LOI.

1/5 on signals. Gotten 25 invites so far but only like 4 of them are academic lol. I guess I got the volume going for me? Sent out 2 LOIs so far with no response. Overall happy but would like to get one of the two that I sent LOIs to and signaled.

No love from the trickle so far, hoping once some of the people that applied to IM as a back up get IVs in their primary specialties they’ll drop the IM spots

By any chance did you apply to the community programs in columbus, ohio? … I thought I would hear back from more community programs

Hoping the same, have 14 but waiting on some academic trickles lol

Anyone have thoughts on Zucker Northwell at Lenox Hill? I need some backup community programs in NY so wondering if that would be a good one to send LOI.

Wasn’t a fan of the idea of doing OSCE in residency and how hard it was to figure out their fellowship match rates. Ask them if you have to do blood draws and nursing tasks. I got a very vague answer last year

Thanks !! Any thoughts on SUNY downstate or NYU Long Island?

How likely is it to match into your top 3? I'm having imposter syndrome about my top choices and worried I'll fall really low on my rank list.

I think for all DO matchees it’s something like ~60% match one of their top three

Thats ridiculous how is it that low? If I didnt match into one of my top 3 or 4 i wouldnt be happy at all. I honestly feel like its more like 80% match their top 4. A lot of doom and gloom on SDN when it comes to DOs has not even come close to happening in my personal experience

If the programs at the top of your list are considered “reaches” for a DO then there is a higher likelihood of dropping farther down your list.

I’ll see if I can dig up the actual numbers. Because it was a pie chart the NRMP put out

Edit: hard numbers from 2021

DOs matching top choice- 38%
DOs matching top 3- 65%
DOs matching top 4- 72%

I’m just going from memory but if I remember the chart I saw last year it was like ~40% get top choice, ~60% top 3, ~75% top 4. For DOs. The numbers are higher for MDs.

I just looked it up for 2021 74% matched their top 3 and 84% matched their top 4. 80+% matching top 4 is solid odds. My top rank will be Vandy and is def without question a reach but none of my others are reaches except for Yale but I am currently WL there so I can't really count that kinda sucks. My other programs are definitely very competitive IM programs but I don't think are reaches but we'll see. I wouldn't really want to go to or be happy at any of the programs below my top 4 (possibly 5) absolute max unfortunately

This is for all specialties I remember seeing that pie chart somewhere. But for IM I think it is much higher than say other specialties like surgery or EM I would think.

Those numbers are for all specialties correct? For IM I think it's higher just because of the shear number of spots.

See my edit. I put in hard numbers from the 2021 NRMP report for DOs.

72% top 4.

Unfortunately you have to just mentally be prepared to match somewhere that isn’t your ideal place. This goes for both MDs and DOs. Too many people get devastated emotionally when they match farther down their list than they wanted.

Thanks for the info.. any idea the chances of getting top 4 or 5 for couples matching? At this point I’ll be grateful to match into any academic

Yeah it’s all specialties, IM is highly variable depending on what your rank list looks like. If it’s a bunch of competitive programs your chances of slipping are greater than if it’s the usual community IM places that make up the majority of DOs applying IM.

To be fair that goes for pretty much any specialty. Competitive programs are competitive for everyone.

I don't know where you getting that data but that doesn't seem right nor can I see it in the link you posted.

I know a number of people from last year who were DO IM applicants that matched at their 4-6 rank, which is what prompted me to post the question in this thread. Kinda scary. I'm optimistic but being realistic just preparing for the worst so I'm not one of those that's completely blindsided on match day if I do fall on my list.

At the end of the day we'll all be docs no matter where we match, even if it's not our top choice. Just have to learn to detach our happiness with something like this that isn't even really in our hands. Just gotta try our best and leave it up to fate I guess.
