I have been in school for a week and I'm already exhausted. I get home at 6pm, crash for 3 hours, and fall asleep getting 0 work done.

How do you guys stay energized?

Have you experienced this consistently before? If so, you may want to address it with your physician.

As far as day-to-day maintenance of energy ... idk, I don't usually have problems. I get adequate sleep probably

What exactly does "crash" mean? Sounds like time you could be getting things done

I think it's a time management problem. You might have to study in the early mornings and rest early during the nights. Binge study during free days and weekends. And if you don't have too much time in the mornings, focus on subjects that'll get quizzed/i-clickers during the week days, and study the rest during weekends.

Talk to an expert if you have to, but I haven't had much luck with advisers personally.

And eat properly. Prepare meals during the weekend and bento that **** for the entire week if necessary.

I guess it is genetics for me?
I will sleep 3 hours and happily get up in the morning and go about my day and not be tired. I try to get at least 5-6 hours of sleep though.

Here are my suggestions for you;
Don't take stimulants to keep you awake
Create a schedule so you can get enough sleep each night
Talk to your primary career physician, it could be a medical issue.. (I'm not a doctor so I don't really know much about this topic)

1. Exercise
2. Doing things I find interesting
3. Sometimes coffee, but generally like 3 cups/week
4. Take a nap if I'm super tired and otherwise can't be productive
5. Change of location
6. Take breaks

Ohh, you bring up a great point
I read somewhere it's best to take power naps.. I am headed to bed, I will post the article if I find it later

It's cool if you just don't like coffee, but I don't understand the "never tried it, never want to" mentality. It tastes good, boosts alertness, and has basically no ill health effects unless you're drinking it like Winston Churchill with a bottle of whiskey

I cannot get anything done at home - I need to study at the library.

How is your sleeping schedule? Since I've taken my sleeping time from 7-8h to 10-12h my energy has really gone up! (My social life rather down though...)

I second the coffee. Also try studying with other people, it might make you more motivated to get stuff done

go to the doctor and get an adderall prescription

or try exercising

You should really study during the hours you are most alert and awake. I'm not saying skip your morning lectures and learn to self-study in the morning -but it is worth considering if you are taking a class w 300+ people where lectures are posted and you never get to interact with the professor.

Focus on ways to make your study time as efficient as possible and have a wide range of non work activities you can look forward to at the end of the day.

I'm one of those people that can function on little sleep for long periods of time. I'm fully functional after 6 hours and can go 12-16 hrs on 3 hours and be fine. Obviously not everyone can function like that.

However, I'm still not a morning person and if I'm expected to actually do anything before noon I'm gonna need a good breakfast and a couple mugs of tea.

The best way to stay energized is to stay healthy (physically and mentally).

Seriously though, caffeine and time management go a long way. I'm tired every single day even this far in and I just have to optimize my highly functional time and rest when I can. Coffee helps, but it's really mostly time management.

Dude me too. I sleep for like 9 hours a night and I'm absolutely exhausted by the end of the day. I dunno how we're gonna survive med school, I'm like non-functional if I get less than 8 hours.

You're not alone OP. Consequentially there's a reason why caffeine is the most used drug in the world.

If I get 8-9 hours of sleep I'm a zombie all day. Experienced this over winter break. 5-7 and I'm full of energy.

Might be oversleeping. Get in a routine/schedule and stick to it.

Work exercise into your daily routine and don't let yourself crash right at 6- take a break, eat a healthy meal, and start getting work done. Take at most a 15-20 minute power nap, but don't let yourself fall asleep for the evening. Have a cup of tea or coffee that you gradually sip as you work

Amazon product ASIN B003X5FYJQAmino Energy by Optimun Nutrition, like an energy drink without any of the sugar or calories. I hate coffee so I drink this stuff. Comes powdered, isn't terribly expensive (130 servings for 65 dollars).
You have 13 different flavor options, grape is the best.

Couldn't imagine taking a preworkout to study. I think the B-alanine would make me go crazy lol.

Same.. I used to sleep 4 hours and be fine. I usually get tired with 8 hours of sleep, maybe that's what's happening.

And unfortunately, I can drink coffee like a baby drinks warm milk before sleeping.

I seriously think this is it. The problem is pushing myself to not go to sleep when tired in the beginning.

It could just be adjusting back to a school sleep schedule or adjusting to your school diet.

When I'm abnormally tired it is usually digestive related. I'm prone to overeating spinach and that slows stuff down, so I normally up my coffee to get other functions going, haha. Tmi, but it could be something like that

I've gone through phases like the one you're going through. What I found helpful was to resist my temptation of crashing when I get home for about a week. You're going to feel terribly tired that week but it becomes easier after that. Make sure you rest 7-8 hours per night while you're trying to fix this. This is assuming these problems aren't related to your health, though.

I still recommend coffee, but OP you could try working out in the morning before classes. I do that now and I'm noticeably more awake/happy than I am when I sleep for the extra hour and a half.

Also OP, you struggle with anxiety issues, right? When I was at the peak of mine in college (sophomore spring for whatever reason), I found that I was way more tired than normal. Regular exercise, even 30 minutes (I know it's cold and harder to get to the gym but it really works) can make all the difference. Also just getting into a routine and sticking with it. I was without fail always more anxious in times of transition and this affected sleep, eating, etc. Tell your friends about it and make plans to study or eat with them so that you have something occupying that time

Could be lupus

I honestly don't even notice it, but when I take preworkout I normally take Jack3d which is justtttt a bit stronger.

Yeah I usually go with C4 or Assault. Either would have me twitching at my desk in the library lol.

I have the same problem too. Do you eat often? I noticed that when I'm tired, it's because I'm hungry and when I am hungry AND tired I become HANGRY. It's awful. I'm one of those people who cannot get work done at home, so I go to the library. Coffee doesn't do anything for me anymore, I literally drink it for taste.

1. Exercise in the morning. Even if it is just a long walk around your neighborhood! Just get moving in some way. I like to do 15-20 minutes of stretching/yin yoga.
2. Eat breakfast, lunch, a light snack, and dinner. Skipping meals is a recipe for disaster.
3. Eat healthy. Very heavy food can be harder to digest, which will make you feel groggy.
4. Coffee is a godsend for me.
5. 20 minute naps! These are glorious. Or just 20 minutes of meditation.
6. Find the amount of sleep you need and get it. Also, avoid all nighters. They will screw you up for days.

Ok, those are a lot of steps.. If you choose to take my advice, just pick one at a time. If you try to create too many habits at once, you will fail. Slow and steady...

Love your picture. I will definitely admit that I am a big fan of that show.

I'm also tired literally all the time. I feel like there came a point when I was around 20 or so where I just got so used to being tired that it doesn't impair my productivity anymore.

If you don't need concerta, adderall or the like, taking them can put your brain in more of a fog and make it more excitable. Even at lower doses.

Same thing with higher amounts of caffeine. Caffeine is a performance enhancer. It's good when you know what you're doing already. When you're trying to learn and absorb, not so much.

Ive determined that 50-60mg for me is optimal. I Never take more than 80mg at a time for learning purposes.

Also, the yo-yo effect of caffeine can be a real drag. I find that when I'm totally caffeine free for about a week, I feel much more mindful and aware. Managing your time/sleep better and changing study patterns is where I'd start. Supplement with smaller amounts of caffeine if you still feel like it's necessary.

Staying awake and being productive is one thing, but keeping your body awake when the mind is groggy is another.

Yes, I'll try to exercise everyday!

How do I stay energized? I enjoy what I do. Not hard to keep going when you are excited to be exactly where you are. I mean, I was in the hospital 12 hours yesterday and then went to the rock gym for 2 hours. *shrug* If you don't enjoy what you are doing, go do something else. Life is way too short to be facing an uphill battle every day.

Unless you find everything hard, in which case, I don't know how to help.

I can go out shopping (very passionate lol) for 6 hours and still be exhausted when I come home. I love school and my classes, it's not an effort to go. I don't even exert much energy and I'm still exhausted.
