Hi guys. Please PLEASE help me!

I'm confused between Montefiore Wakefield Campus (offers H1b visa) and Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education (offers J1 visa). I'm inclined towards a cardiology fellowship but I'm not too strict about that. I don't know if I should go for H1b visa or J1 visa. In other words, I don't really know if I'd really want to go for a J1 visa for a competitive fellowship or just go for H1b visa to decrease the chances of denial of J1 visa and renewing the J1 visa every year if I visit my home country.

I know two people who's J1 got denied last year and another guy who's J1 got denied one year into his residency. Basically he came back to his home country and applied for his J1 renewal and his J1 got denied. He had to leave residency training because of that. This problem doesn't occur when you're on a H1b visa.

Both the visas have their pros and cons but please if someone was in a similar situation last year, please respond and state the visa that you ultimately chose! Thanks a lot for your replies!

Good list. I would rank the same.

In case anyone is interested, I just found out that the IM program in Hemet, CA has a 20% board pass rate (info confirmed by the program director). All except one graduating resident failed their boards last year. (Although, if you feel confident in your study skills, I'm sure this makes the program easier to match into).

I personally did not enjoy the interview day at Nassau at all, was cringing throughout that PD presentation. Horribly low compensation for a New York program to add to that. My friend who also interviewed there got asked a bunch of illegal questions. I've ranked it towards the bottom of my list.
Thank you for the reply, so right about the PDs frivolity. I have actually moved them quite down my list, had to go to back and do some research, the work culture is not the best.
Have u interviewed at Jacobi perhaps? I interviewed there but had the worst interview experience, but it has a great reputation so I'm just wondering

Did the people in Einstein confirm you that they would give you H1? Id certainly rank them above CCF Fl if so. Along with Case Metrohealth (does it giveH1?) and Cook County

Just wondering why you put Wakefield so low?
I didn't get a good enough feel of the place during my interview. The community residencies I could tell the residents were very happy and very close to each other. Also not overworked and had decent work-life balance. SUNY, I feel will provide great networking opportunity and if I do end up wanting to pursue fellowship it would give me a better chance even though training will be rigorous. Maybe I didn't give Wakefield good enough chance. What are your thoughts on Montefiore Wakefield?

Unsure about how to rank my top 5:

1./2. Allegheny vs Uni at Buffalo
3./4. Medstar Washing Hosp Cntr vs Zucker Staten Island Uni
5. Uni of Missouri at Columbia

Any thoughts?

Hello peeps! Mind giving me any input regarding my ROL?
1. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, IA
2. University of Mississippi, MS
3. Michigan State University, MI
4. Morristown Medical Center, NJ
5. Danbury Hospital, CT
6. Advocate Illinois Masonic, IL
7. Lincoln Medical Center, NY
8. Crozer Chester Medical Center, PA
9. St. Vincent Medical Center, OH

Any idea about these programs? All of them are very similar to me.
1. UPMC McKeesport
2. UPMC pinnacle
3. St. Agnes Baltimore

The two places I interviewed from your ROL are Wakefield and Flushing. I agree Flushing should be at the bottom.

My thoughts about Wakefield..well managed program, residents seem happy, very good fellowship match rate and liked the X+Y schedule.

Do you think the fact that they don't allow electives outside the montefiore system is a limitation for fellowship?

Does anybody know Icahn school of medicine /VA Bronx is offering H1b . The program director said we might not .

what jobs IMGs can do in USA if they don't match? Are you guys waiting for the match or looking for the jobs?

Hey Guys,
Help me rank these programs. I want to do a cardiology fellowship.
Cook County
Medstar Washington
The University of Arkansas (Little Rock)
Texas Tech Lubbock
Montefiore Wakefield
Bridgeport Hospital
Presence St Francis

What was your experience regarding your top three choices? I mean cook, MedStar, and Arkansas.

Hi Guys. I have some confusion regarding the ranking of some of my programs. Can someone help me rank the following programs. I am looking for competitive fellowship in future but not sure which one right now. Leaning towards cardiology or pulm/crit. The factors important for me are programs reputation, fellowship chances, good teaching.

Marshfield Clinic vs UAB Montgomery vs UPMC Pinnacle vs Sinai Hospital of Baltimore

Any help is highly appreciated. TIA

I didn’t know that. They have a good reputation and fellowship match rate though. I guess it is not a problem. Some one can weigh in on this..

Hey, guys. What are your thoughts on ranking a new program? That Einstein new campus seems promising but not sure if I want to rank it higher than some more established but lower prestige programs.

how would you rank it compared to staten island university hospital? both are in NY. Would appreciate the input.

Here is what I am thinking..
If I don’t match, being a research assistant will be my second best choice. I am currently taking a NIH free online course on “ clinical research “ to help me in that endeavor. It is 38 hour long video course with online certification if you pass the assessment.

If that doesn’t work ,I will look for medical assistant position. If all fails, will do Chick-fil-A for the money

I hope we all match and don’t have to go through this though!

I didn’t interview at Staten Island UNV so I have limited info on that. May be some one will share input on that..

Thank you for the answer, I hope and pray we all match at our top choices.

The reason they don't allow external electives is because the parent Montefiore has all the elective possibilities you could think of. Pulmonology, Cardio, Gastro e.t.c. It's all available within the network.

hello.
I’m confused between choosing a county hospital in a great location with emphasis on research and teaching, but no in house fellowship. Or a hospital in a location I don’t prefer, but has in house fellowship of my interest.
In other words Does in house fellowship outweigh all other factors that can boost your resume (such as research opportunities)

I think it might depend on the institution because I’ve heard people complain that when a place has fellows in a subspecialty sometimes that means less opportunities for residents because the fellows take all the cases in that field. Then of course on the other hand it’s a first hand shot at getting that fellowship at you own institution as well as that institution will definitely have research going on in the field if they have a fellowship. So basically there are more opportunities in that subspecialty but then there is also the possibility of fellow competition.

Edit: these are just things I’ve thought about based on what residents have told me not fact for all institutions or anything

Hey guys
Need your opinion !
im a visa req 2018 grad interested in competitive fellowships
which should I rank higher?
Prince George’s county v mercy catholic Darby.
I honestly liked mercy better.
both hv no in house fellowships n Prince George’s seemed to be in a very shady area. (Jus 12 spots) v mercy so close to philly (20 spots)
Does number of residents correlate to workload in any way?
should I jus rank Prince George’s higher becuz if it’s affiliation to u Maryland?
Really confused!

No worries.

Can someone weigh in on this? I'm interested in Hem/Onc and not sure which program to rank higher. Staten island university hospital vs Montefiore Wakefield. Loved both programs, heard good things and bad things about both. No idea how to break the tie at this point. Not my top choices but among the top 6.

Would appreciate the help. Thanks.

I saw during my interview that Montefiore Wakefield Campus doesn't have a cath lab, I've heard that can really affect your chances for a cards program in the future.
