I've seen the threads for early interviews, etc. but wanted to get a more realistic idea for us IMGs.

I was reading a similar post for last years IMG interview stats.

Please post your specialty, Step stats, how many programs applied to and if you have received any invites/rejections.

I'll go first....

Peds
US Citizen
Carrib school - graduate in Dec.
Step 1 (very low) - 78😱😡🙁
Step 2 CK - take in 1 week (plan to score much higher)
Step 2 CS - waiting on results (took in Aug.)

Applied to 65 programs - 7 interviews; 3 rejections; 2 waiting for CK results; 1 on wait list

I would think family medicine or Internal medicine but FM is probably your better bet.

I applied to 32 programs in IM and FM. So far only 2 invites - one at UT Houston for FM, and other at Halifax Medical Center in FL (for FM). One rejection from Baylor, Houston (again, for FM). Haven't heard from any of the IM programs.

Today i decided to apply to 5 more programs in EM, all in FL.

We shall see!

What have you been doing since 1999?? I'm sure that's what programs are wondering...

My husband was doing his masters so I had to be there for the kids.

I have tried contacting the programs and have left voice messages.
Believing them to be busy, my calls were never returned.
Once, when I was lucky enough to get through I was told that they were conducting rolling interviews. If I heard nothing till mid Dec. I am not to be interviewed.

I hate to be the bearer or bad news but many places strongly prefer those who have graduated within the last 5 years. It will be hard to convince a program to take anyone who will have been out of practice for nine years by the time residency starts.

I agree. Even five years is stretching it.

Sahara, you are going to have to show some recent experiences in clinical medicine if you haven't already. Best wishes to you.

3- Apply to Fam Practice programs.

4- Apply to Psych. Some programs actually VALUE the time you spent doing something other than Medicine.

5- Try talking in Forums like valuemd , they have may people in your situation and I am sure they can give you a lot of support.

I have been volunteering in 2 free medical clinics for more than a year now and have good LOR's from there.
In addition to that I am volunterring as a study coordinator, in clinical research, in a university hospital for more than 8 months now, very good LOR from there as well.
And I know this for a fact that all of this really does not count as USCE 🙁

I am interested in doing Gen. Surg. and CT surgery afterwards. Not interested in migration (at least is not plan A).

I like to flatter myself by saying I did "mediocre" on board scores : step1 = 77 first time, step 2 cs = passed first time, step 2 ck = 81 passed second time.
Strong letters of recommendation , I had the opportunity to do alot of procedures.
12 Fm interviews and a few IM.

I have a friend with roughly exactly same stats, we graduated together. One interview.

Another friend (FMG), graduates this spring, with slightly better stats (84 on step 1), but had poorer clinical experience than me ( never caught one baby, never really did a first assist in surgery, never inserted a nasogastric tube etc) - 47 interview invites.

There's a friend of mine in this year's (2008) match... aiming for SURGERY:

USCE: 1 year of Preliminary Surgery

He applied at all mid, north, and eastern states surgery programs, preliminary and categorical, community, university-affiliated and university programs.

He only recieved 3 invites for another prelim surgery year (including one at a ghetto hospital) , and only 2 invites for categorical surgery.

Is it really that bad or is it only him?

When did he graduate? Do his prelim year? Submit his application? How many of his LORs were from surgery?

It is really that bad... from what I have seen so far... if you are an IMG... they better know you, or someone else get your foot on the door, or they will not even take a look at your picture...

if he is doing a prelim, I hope he is in a good standing at his program... that is he's best bet....

Sadly, maybe it is that bad. Undeniably, the wall to hurdling residency application is much taller for IMGs. But well, in a way, it "makes" sense considering we are trying to infiltrate a system. And there are so many IMGs now.

It is really, really, really tough! I was warned it was going to be tough but I had no idea of the real extent. As I tell myself, the die has been cast, and we must do our best and await the results. Good luck guys! I really really hope we all match, although given the numbers, that's really impossible.

I'm amazed at how competitive EM is. It's also going to be tough as it's your second residency. Best of luck with your interviews - remember you technically only need one good interview!

This is so true. But it doesn't help your nerves when you are ranking less programs than you have fingers on one hand. Still, if you have only a few interviews, you go there and you sell yourself better than anyone has ever sold themselves before and prove to them why you should be taken for that particular residency spot.
