Immigration after DDS??

I'm a international student currently DS1. If I wish to remain in the states after graduation from D school. How challenging is it to obtain a green card? I've heard from ppl that I first have to obtain a work visa a H-1? and after 5 years ?? I'll be eligible to apply for perm. residency. Are employers willing to sponser the H-1/green card? Do I have to work in less desired areas or at a lower than average pay? Info would be greatly appreciated.
