I know that many people say you need to switch institutions for post-doc so you are training to become an independent researcher in a different environment. But, for MSTP grads, how important do you think this is? One advisor told me that it's certainly acceptable to stay at the same university as long as you are working in a different lab/different group.
And, if one did a research pathway track (like CSTP/PSTP/STAR etc), is it acceptable to seek positions elsewhere when you are done? I understand that part of the unwritten motivation of having programs like this is so that the institution can "grow their own" successful faculty instead of having to recruit established researchers from outside.
